Six very short (ranging in length from 8 to 18 minutes) classic tales from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, by authors Bernard Capes, W. F. Harvey, Edith Nesbit and Barry Pain. Timestamps below. Some of the stories are already available on the channel as individual uploads, but perhaps because of their brevity they seem to be less listened to, so I thought I'd put them together to make a longer compilation. (Note: as these were recorded episodically between 2020 and 2024 you may notice a slight variation in acoustic/audio quality between stories.) 00:01:32 The Case of Vincent Pyrwhit, by Barry Pain 00:09:17 John Charrington's Wedding, by Edith Nesbit 00:29:09 The Marble Hands, by Bernard Capes 00:37:00 The Mystery of the Semi-Detached, by Edith Nesbit 00:45:53 The Clock, by W. F. Harvey 00:59:40 Rose Rose, by Barry Pain (Story teasers and more details can be found in the video description)
Simon, you are a gem on TH-cam like no other. A marvelously talented man you are. Man sized in Marble is this years ghost story for Xmas on BBC. Very much lookin forward to this adaptation. Wishing you a happy Xmas, lad.
Thank you, Simon, I really enjoyed these stories. Your voice invokes such an air of nostalgia that I feel as though I've gone back to a past life that I don't want to return from 😊I'm Looking forward to more glitches in the matrix with you.
Thank you Simon. TH-cam does make finding your stories, even on your channel, hard to find, so this is great. How's your acting tour going? Still at it? A blessing is what you are! Thank you again
Indeed, you are spoiling us dear Simon, more wonderful performances to relish, you have remembered us all at Christmas, seasons greetings to you and your family!
It's cold and rainy here, and I'm all curled up on the couch in a blacket with a hot coffee, relaxing and scrolling through YT when my prayers were answered with your notification. Thanks, Simon. I needed this. Happy Christmas to you!😊
Thank you very much Simon. These stories are a God send. I can tell from the comments other listeners appreciate them as much as I do. Hello from Manchester, England
I first read this story as a youngster, and to this day, it scares me. It invokes a real feeling of dread. And the narration was on point; the matter-of-fact delivery only added to the eeriness. I hope my path never crosses Mrs. Caleb’s!
Thank you, I'm missing recording as regularly as normal... I have a couple of things "in the can" which I just need to find some time to edit. Hoping I'll be able to get something else out around Christmas time
Always handsome but the beard is lovely, if you don't mind my saying so. I am forever grateful to you because I had no idea there was such a thing as rivals of Sherlock Holmes. Loved old Sherlock Holmes movies since I was a kid, pretty weird a little American girl loving Sherlock Holmes films from the 40s, and especially the world war II era ones, absolutely spellbound by the Voice of Terror. Again thank you so much, although I admit I am partial to the female detectives. I mean, who knew???! Not me, until Simon 😀
Thank you! The beard is no more, as I had to lose it for the play I'm in at the moment, but I just haven't had time to record a new intro video! It's on my to-do list...
Would you consider reading ‘The Indian in the Cupboard?……… and poetry? Hiawatha/ excerpts from Jungle book? I enjoy your audio books very much. Thanks very much.
Hello, I listened by mistake, could not turn off so listened. Well, I am so glad I listened, I enjoyed every story and you made a tedious afternoon most pleasurable. Thank you.
Can't say much without divulging spoilers, but the basic premise is that of the dead wife communicating with her husband, via a disconnected telephone, apparently warning him, but not making it clear that it is a warning... a bit like The Signal-man in a way. I just did a quick Google search and it looks like there are a couple of essays/blogs discussing this story, which may help elucidate further?
There was a short story i read once ages ago in a borrowed book. About a man obsessed with an ethereal girl whose flesh died where she touched him. She started following another man and he was heartbroken. Can't remember who wrote it.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT RE: JOHN CHARRINGTON'S WEDDING At first I thought (and I already had heard this one) of course as you would, what the hell could have happened, in that carriage.. like what on Earth could have happened. And then almost immediately, I thought, I wonder what Mrs Nesbitt thought had happened, I mean if she had actually worked it out for herself.....🤔
Indeed, good question, and I think the fact it's left to us to speculate/imagine that makes that particular tale work so well, it's one of my personal favourites of the genre

Excellent little stories, like Christmas petits fours! I'm intrigued that two involve such death-invoking promises.
Thanks, Simon, for continuing to keep us entertained.
Best wishes, Les.
I haven't kept my eye on the screen during your wonderful narrations for a long time it seems. The beard and mustache are very attractive.

Tuning in to these as an inducement to sleep and finding they produce the opposite effect. Approaching a cold midnight in America.
