I much prefer Sorbus (Rowan/Mountain Ash) to Fraxinus (Ash) as they have nicer bark and red fruit, the compound leaves are also smaller. I have a couple of Ash trees but find it difficult to create branching and as for the "mildery powdew" (12:00) don't get me started.. 🤣
Thanks for mentioning the variety difference and having seen an example of the mountain Ash in Sazburg I would have to agree with you. But I still love trying to make bonsai of these :)
Congrats to your son and future daughter in law. It’s beautiful to see a family grow! Oh and love your sense of humour along side your expertise. Thank you
Thanks and I will pass on your best wishes. IIs the Alsation yours or just a lovely picture? My humour can get a little over the top sometimes and my wife used to tell me I didnt have a 'regulator'...
Congratulations to your son and his partner on their engagement 💍 great video by the way such a great tree one of my favourite trees .. I could not make it to see Tony as I could not get time off work .would have been great to meet you all as I follow all you guys .
Thanks and I will pass on your best wishes to the happy couple. Hopefully you will get an opportunity to pop in and be bored senseless by me and my trees :0
Informative video Xavier. I like the verbalization you do in your decision making. It helps me to validate the options I see and it's fun to see if we come to the same decisions. Lovely azalea by the way.
It is always good to have someone join from the South (i grew up in Melbourne and have a good frined in NZ). I will have to look that species up to see what sort of alien :)
Another great video Xavier 👍🏼 very touching about your son ❤ i love the verbal diarrhoea, you explaining your thought process really helps me in decisions i have and will make on my trees, so I say, keep it coming 👍🏼 im trtong to grow some curtings of rowan this year, as love the little berrirs on those trees, also aquired an ash in the spring on a walk... Blooming marvellous azalea ❤Thank you🙏🏼
Thanks Rob - I hadn't realised there should be berries...I just need to wait I suppose. It is amazing what can end up in your pocket after a pleasant country stroll :)
I don’t have one as a bonsai but do have one growing over the fence next door, above the pond. They have nice compound leaves. Lovely story with the engagement ring, and congratulations on the engagement.
1st off...Congratz Xav to gaining a daughter-in-law and congratz to your son and his wife. I love the story of the ring too, makes the moment even more special... I hope we see more of your fam in future videos. Great video as always and eloquently explained sir. 👌👍🙏
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I did post a reply but its vanished... nothing wrong with getting your fam involved.. its good seeing you all working together and hope to see more of them 👍 keep up the great video Xav 🙏
Congratulations!! More so for James... But for you as well Xavier! You have done fantastic with your family. You should be very proud. Continuing the memory of your wife. Just beautiful! For your glue, Q-tips or whatever those sticks with the bit of cotton on the end are called there, would work too and you can toss them in the trash. But fingers are fine too. For the amount you use really.... Just don't wipe that on your pants. Nice ash trees. We have a few kinds up here, Black ash, mountain ash being most common where I am. They were completely annihilated by the emerald ash borer beetles. I'm seeing them really bounce back last few years. Mountain ash with the red berries it gets, would make a nice bonsai. Great information here!
im a big fan of ash myself and i love that first tree but these are all great. really good for beginners, i agree congrats on your son's engagement. really nice his decision to honor his wife-to-be with the legacy of your marriage to his mother. i am sure she is smiling down on them.
Definitely and this will probably prompt Tammi's engagement as well - her boyfriend has been dithering a bit! It is a shame that his mother will not be present but life continues :)
i been practicing with a full size maple in the ground for years. its too big to dig sadly. but fun chopping on lol. thanks xav. nice trees. alwsys great info/videos
I like the look of a rowan. Unfortunately, they are highly susceptible to fire blight here in Idaho and most don't live very long so bonsai is a real risk. We are now suffering with green ash borer so I avoid ash trees. Alas, I shall admire from afar! There's plenty other trees in the bonsai forest.
Congratulations to your son and daughter in law, how touching about your late wife's ring. Lovely to hear in today's culture. I have grown a mature rowan from a whip (and silver birch). But we were gifted a small tree for our wedding. It's 5' now and still in a container, so I was wondering about styling it and reducing it. I need to do more research. Great to use natives trees, also it flowers and fruits so has some interest. Love the forest and pond! P.S. verbal diarrhoea isn't bad, you're teaching me loads! Take care, Jane
Congratulations as well , they are a handsome looking couple. I have ash trees but don’t know the species. We call them mountain ash. They have withstood the fluctuating weather and are still going strong, even with my inexperienced treatment.
Great little video Xav and you're right Ash are beautiful trees. Dan was so generous and gave me one. With your camera work - Practice, practice and practice. As they say 1000 hours makes you an expert Great to see your children getting involved in bonsai too. Ahhhh biggest congratulations to your son! All the best to them in the future.
I bought 4 Rowan saplings sold as hedging material last year for £1.58 each. I stuck them in a bed to thicken with no idea what I was going to do with them. Thanks at least I've got some ideas going forward now.
I find them quite a fun and easy going tree to work with. They can be a bit difficult to ramify but I have no doubt with time that will happen. Have fun Nick
@expressionsofgracebonsai I'll sort one out when I get a chance, it kinda just grew small on its own, just put it into a small training pot and have left it to its devices, I'm new to the hobby so still learning the basics, planted conkers for a laugh and now I'm swamped with horse chestnuts lol
I would love to do that but I am at the mercy of him and his parents. Tony was pretty insistent that we remain happy and thinking of all the good stuff. It goes without saying that when I am told something I will pass it on. God bless
Those are my trees 😍 As you know I do have some and I‘m really enjoying their development. Learned something new about the bud-rub-away, although in other trees it’s common practice for me 😂 My favorites are my yamadori shohin mountain ashes, both not more than 20cm in height. 🌱 Thanks for the pruning advices and special tips. Regarding dieback my experience is -there is no, if the bark has sufficient hardened. Cutting when it’s young green and soft results usually in dieback down to the next leave/bud. I do not have any issues either, besides some cauliflower-like growings, which seem to start from buds and dry off later on. I think it‘s some infection. Have them sometimes for feature, but mostly remove them. ✂️ Congratulations on James engagement. 🥳 Pleasant to hear good news between all those bad one’s. Stay well Xavier, take care of yourself and may god bless your family 🙏 Cheers Martina 🙋♀️
i've got a couple of young ash saplings that i've been leaving to thicken. problem is they're just growing tall and leggy. how do i begin to reduce them safely? will they back bud if i hard prune it? congratulations to your son
I have a growing bed where I let them thicken. One of them is about 3ft tall but thin and leggy. What I then do is cut it right back to the first junction and start the process again. Now is a good time for that.
Hi Xav congratulations to your so, he presents his video using expressions you use sounds just like, I have not got an ash of any type in my collection must remedy that asap, did you just say nude pruning ? hope your talking about the tree mate or you will scare the natives, come to think of it I did have a small rowen not sure what happened to it, I do like the tree with the weird bend best of all of the ash, the azalea is looking splendid in bloom, I lost 2 this for some reason sad about the lose.
