Spurs - Thunder 112-107 : finale (regulation and OT) | Game 6 | western finals 2014

  • Good, intense finale to the series. Thunder managed to come back and force the game to overtime, but the Spurs kept their head and prevailed. That basket Duncan scored in the end of regulation would have been basket of the year if it counted IMO. San Antonio Spurs - Oklahoma City Thunder 112-107
NOTE: This video has a bit heavier cutting and less crowd/players reations than my other uploads, but doing it in any other way ended up with the video blocked. Still, everything worth noting in the final minutes (including some replays) is in here.

OKC coach Scott Brooks decided to go small in OT, with Ibaka at center. Either Brooks believed Ibaka can guard Duncan in the post, or he didn't give it much thought. Pop and Duncan obviously thought otherwise. In OT, the motion-offense heavy-Spurs suddenly switched back to their early 2000s self and fed the ball to Duncan in the post repeatedly. He punished Ibaka 3 times, netting 1 field goal and 2 shoot fouls (3/4 FT) and thus a total of 5 points.
After the strip-steal by Leonard, OKC's defense was in shambles and while they managed to get back, a glaring mismatch happened - Reggie Jackson was guarding Duncan. Very soon both teams knew it - Jackson tried to front Duncan like a mad man because he knew he had no chance to guard Duncan's post up if Ibaka couldn't. He could only try to deny the entry pass.
Manu tried to fool OKC's defense by passing the ball to Diaw against Jackson's aggressive move. When Diaw passed back the ball he immediately touch-passed it to Duncan. He fooled no one though, seemingly, as Westbrook even took the risk to leave his man Danny Green completely at the other side of the court and tried to steal the ball. Duncan, unfazed, caught the ball calmly with his back behind the basket. Danny Green was wide open and waived his hands like crazy. But Duncan, rarely, didn't pass because he knew neither Jackson nor Westbrook could guard him in the post. He had literally scored like this thousands of times before. And then he did, turned around and shot the ball over Jackson and Westbrook's outstretched hands.
This is the 7th consecutive point Duncan scored in the OT. The Spurs scored a total of 11 points, of which the last 2 were FTs triggered by OKC to extend the game. So 7 of 9 points was scored by Duncan in the post when it still mattered.
Not much national media talked about this in details then, but this was actually such a precious moment with so many subtle story line. In addition to it being the hardest win for the Spurs, It's a battle of wit of which Pop completely out-coached Brooks in the OT. It's Duncan, one of the oldest player in the league who made use of post up scoring - a skill largely rendered ineffective by the NBA along the years - to punish one of the best big men defender in the league. Even Duncan, one of the greatest post up player, rarely posted up by 2014. But the opportunity came, and Pop decided to go with it, completely changed Spurs offense. That's how much he trusted Duncan. And Duncan delivered.
It's wisdom, trust, relic from the past, and the defiance of father time. It's the best game, and by far the best OT I have watched as a Spurs fan along the years.

Incredible game to watch. Two things I'll never forget about that OT: the first is Leonard stripping Westbrook in the final minute (might've been the single biggest play of the entire 2014 playoffs). The second is Duncan putting the team squarely on his back and carrying them to the Finals. I got choked up watching him celebrate.

This Spurs team had one of the most dominant final 3 rounds in playoff history. After being tied 3-3 with Dallas in the first round, they won their last 13 playoff games by 23, 24, 17, 15, 22, 17, 35, 28, 5, 15, 19, 21 and 17 points. They had a throwaway loss to Portland when they were already up 3-0, two losses to the Thunder in this series and if not for a bad fourth quarter in G2 of the Finals they would have swept the Heat. OKC did well to compete in this series considering how dominant the Spurs became.

Manu had 15.2 and 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals in just 23 minutes. Diaw had a great series too, and that steal by Kawhi in this game was clutch. Steven H Wang 1.Parker was their best player at that point, not third best. At worst he was tied with Kawhi.
2.Parker was seriously banged up from games 4-6. He missed most of game 6.
3.The first two games were blowouts (combined 55 point differential with lots of garbage time) and in #2 the entire team was ice cold from the floor; Ibaka's presence would have made a minimal difference considering how little passing and intelligent play design takes place on OKC's offense. You don't get to make excuses when you're getting mauled like that, regardless.
So whether you want to play the "what if" game or just check results, straight up, you lost. The spurs have been the better team since 2013 and were DAMN sure better last year. DEAL. WITH. IT.

evidence of westbrook hurting durant, they would never win a chip together. westbrook's misses hurt the team. in clutch situations the ball should be with durant. he's taller, stronger and finishes better at the rim. he demands double team thereby creating an open three or shot for his team mate. on three possessions, westbrook took terrible shots while durant got just a contested three down the stretch. i remember this season when westbrook got injured and was replaced by reggie, the okc team played a lot better. durant got the shots he wanted, not shots westbrook couldn't take

Thunder really doesn't have any excuses for losing this game they had Ibaka,Westbrook & Durant & let's not forget Parker didn't play in the 2nd half & the Spurs still won they were just the better team period
