Grimes deserves props for the way she performs live. The electronic nature of many of her songs would make it pretty obvious that she can just use playback and sing over it, but instead of taking the easy way out, she decides to replay the synths live as well. =)
So inspiring to watch someone this young and this talented, having so much fun creating weird art. She seems so casual and spontaneous. She even finds time to dance - and mess with her hair! - while she spins out these perfectly timed, wonderful sounds. Very fun to watch. Musicians like this are never fully appreciated in their prime, but if she hangs in there and keeps creating for another 10 years she will become recognized by the mainstream as a musical genius.
Of course I know Aphex Twin. I'm a longtime electronic music aficionado. I know my stuff. That is why I find Grimes interesting. What we are witnessing here is the beginning of a musician with the talent, skill, and creative drive to eventually grow into a future Aphex Twin. As I said in my previous comment - give her another 10 years. At this early stage the genius of Grimes is her sheer willingness to just get up there & f*cking DO it. I am rooting for her potential. People will always feel the need to critique. Even when they are in no position. But we all know if we like something or not. Opinions are like a**holes as everyone has one. I definitely know I love Grimes work. She is a great artist in so many ways and very successful because she does only what she loves. She is not for the pedestrian of mind. Most people don't realize her technical ability. Her passion really shows and I love watching it .
I've seen Stones,Hendrix,Zeppelin, Who,Floyd, Stone Roses,Nirvana + 100s of other big names all live.But I would give all those memories away to see this incredible girl do a 1hour set live.

You make a decent point. We need a word that means "the sheer awesome creative spirit to just fucking make cool stuff, by an artist who is still early in their career". That would perhaps be more fitting and less people would be offended by the overuse of the word "genius". But I do think Grimes is a genius. Ha.
