@@rpgsammler I came as close to anyone at solving Ultima 4, but getting the 3rd to last question wrong destroyed my will....(It took like 8 hrs to get there and answer them).
God, those games were good. I had it if I'd realized what they were asking. Painfully obvious in hindsight.
I think Ultima 4 was the best one.
But Ultima 1 was excellent too. Play them all. Anyone remember "crunch..... crunch.....crunch...... in Ultima 1? That was a memory! In those days 5 people were watching 1 person play. That was near the end but the person docked it backwards.... and died,.... crunch.
We were roaring laughter. Games these days are too stupid. All pretty with no substance.
@@Turtlehands Turned 20 year old been looking to touch most rpg titles of the past and since they aren't long or many before the 90's.
But gotta skip out on dungeon master though.
You probably dont care but if you are bored like me atm you can stream pretty much all the new series on Instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend lately xD
My favourites are *The Elder Scrolls II:Daggerfall* and *Might and Magic IV & V: World of Xeen*. Thank you for mentioning them.
Nice list. Interesting to see Four Crystals here. Really innovative gameplay on that one for sure. Good ol' Goldbox, Ultima, M&M...You could spend a lot of time delving into each of these.
Yes, these games gives hundreds of great gameplay imho. Nearly all of them i play even today and find new things to discover. Also i have played many of these games as a teenager (and doens´t understood everything), but playing these games today as an adult is even more fun because i unterstand more of the games story and gameplay elements.
Great list and obviously great taste! I only missed fallout1, Darklands, Realms of Arkania 2, Ultima 4 & 5, Dark Sun Wake of Ravager, maybe even Dark heart of Uukrul. But with many great games in your list it's hard to make space hehe :)
This is a great list, I've played most of these but not all. I've always preferred TES:Arena to Daggerfall just because of the map in Daggerfall never worked well for me. My favorites are TES:Arena, Secret of the Silver Blades, Anvil of Dawn, Menzoberranzan, and my favorite The Dark Heart of Uukrul.
Oh yes, i play daggerfall at the moment and i HATE the map, absolutly the baddest map in all rpgs :)
I just finished "Curse of the Azure Bonds" and started "Secret of the Silver Blades"! Of course, in college I had then on the Commodore 64, now I play the GOG versions. I still have the Dragonlance series after the Forgotten Realms titles. Good times and memories.
Ultima Underworld Stygian Abyss....awesome game...and way ahead of its time

I appreciate Ultima as a whole but I have never devoted enough time to this series. That's why there's not a single part in my top 10.
So many great DOS RPGs. I only payed a few at the time (being young and more interested in Commander Keen or Doom back then), but I remember enjoying Lands of Lore and some of the Ultima games (I think I spent most of my time in Ultima 7 just messing around in the world and I never actually finished it!). Getting back around to playing a lot of these games now, there's so many good ones it's hard to pick a starting point though!
Ahhh M&M 4-5 are seriously some of the best games ever created in my opinion, they sucked up so much time for me that it's just ridiculous.
Terrific game, all around.
and the fact that you can combine them into 1 big game. Suprised more games dont do that.
but I guess if that happened now people would just complain that they were sold 2 half-games instead....

Oh yes, its one of my favorite songs of all classical rpgs, but i regret today that i have made this great song too short in this video...

Yes! I loved 4 Crystals of Trazere and it almost never gets discussed. Fantastic magic system. U7 is also my favorite DOS RPG.
I agree totally on U7 (part 2 wasn't quite as good as the first for me but still awesome). I knew "The Four Crystals of Trazere" as Legend which I haven't thought of since the 90's!
my favorite game is ultima 7 serie too and eye beholder 1&2.... I have finished curse of azure bond so many time too.

4.Amberstar (Ambermoon gefällt mir besser, gibt es aber leider nur für den Amiga)
5. Ultima Underworld
i do actually like ambermoon less then amberstar, especially because of like turning while moving work, it is imo super clunky

In my list, westwood studio's lands of lore 1 (the others were terrible) is a must.
You proved your worthiness by ranking Ultima VII at the #1 place. Personally, I also regard UVII and UVII part II serpent isle as the greatest games of all times
Very cool list, man. I have played every game on your list except for Betrayal at Krondor, though I own the CD version of it, I haven't gotten to it. I've played the Windows version of Wizardry 7, and prefer playing Ultima 7 in DOSBox than under Exult. Maybe I will even share my top 10 with you one day!

my favorites are Ultima Underworld/Ultima7/Martian Memorandum, Might and Magic World of Xeen, Eye of the Beholder, and I couple more I couldn't remember their names. Hopefully, I'll find them in your channel.

Played it all, but Daggerfall is by far the best RPG ever made, I played it with my friend for months, maybe a year straight. If anyone would like to make game so advanced to its time, it must have looked 100% real, with whole Earth simulated and working

I haven't played any first person dos RPGs so this list is very useful. I'll check out Ultima Underworld 1 first.
u got a good list here ; i would only change/add a few things -
Star Control 2
Ultima 5/6 specifically but imho the whole series is legendary and worthwhile [excluding 9]
Betrayal at Krondor would be my No 1 game.

Very difficult to name only 10 dos rpg's, but your list is really good! Ultima VII is really the best crpg ever created. To anyone who starts to play it for the 1st time, take some time to configure Dosbox to play it. You'll get the authentic experience. Exult feels too much different to me, I don't like it
I'm playing Eye of the Beholder 2 and I find it cool. I suggest you Stone Prophet, in my opinion the best first person AD&D game. It is perhaps the most beautiful game of a trilygy (see also "Menzoberranzan" and "Strahd's Possession").

I like the Ravenloft games, i already startet with Strahd´s Possession, but first, i will play through Anvil of Dawn.
If you enjoy Curse of Azure Bonds you are happy to hear there are several similar games made by SSI. Pool of Radiance series, Savage Frontier series, Dragonlance series and propably my personal favorite Buck Rogers series. Get every game and you wont sleep in a while.
Great choices, I only heard of a few games, Daggerfall looks interesting.
You should try them out, most of them can be downloaded for free at squakenet or abandonia.
Am I the only one with love for the Gold Box series of AD&D? I learned to play from those games, and most later variations lacked the deep story and open world nature of the early editions.

Got everything besides place 7 and 2. Would like to see best point and click adventure games, and best turn-base strategy.
Nummer 8 und 6 habe ich auch lange gezockt. Vor allem Ultima Underworld fand ich großartig. In meine persönlichen Topliste gehört aber noch DSA2. Ein bisschen weniger bekannt aber sehr gut fand ich noch Dark Sun.

my family didnt have a computer until christmas 1998 so i missed the DOS era completely. however with websites like gog i can go back in time and play the classics.
maziku Yes, do this, there are many very good games from the DOS era (and not all of them are rpg). Download and install DOSbox and start your journey as soon as possible :)
You should try Anvil of Dawn for MS-DOS. It's one of my favorites, I'm so addicted.

Temple of elemental evil the only accurate translation of D&D 3.5 which has been constantly modded and improved by the circle of 8 all these years making it the best RPG of all time PEROID!

i started my first party on ToEE and i had a dwarven fighter who used a glaive but then i started all over and switch him to great axes. you're right about polearms, they are way OP. amazing combat though!

My only wish is Ultima 7 had turn-based combat. Yeah, yeah, I know, go play Exult they say! ... Exult just looks... bad, compared with a regular CRT. If only I could get THAT version running in Dosbox.
I doubt you check comments on this ancient video, but just in case, judging by Black Gate being your number one and the fact that you're German, did you play Tibia back in the day? Anyway, great list, cheers!
Thanks for the tip, I honestly didn't know the game yet. It really shares some similarities with Ultima 7, is also interesting to see that it still runs even today.
@@rpgsammler Yeah it's much different nowadays however. I think the closest to Ultima was when it first started up until about '08-'09. Still fun today but all the sharp edges have been padded down and completely nerfed. Thanks for the reply though!

Though on part of U7, the weeks were mostly spent trying to work around the horrible memory manager that Origin bundled it with and which made it incompatible with emm386 -_-

Could anyone possibly help me find a DOS game I've been looking for since forever? It's an action RPG in the style of Zelda with a top-down perspective, and you started out in a building with a wooden floor next to a grassy field. The only useful information I can add is, I believe you had a party of four people, a knight, wizard, archer, etc. and you played as one character at a time. If a character died, you would switch to a different party member to play as. And the enemies started moving as soon as the game started. The first screen you're on would have no enemies at first, but if you sat there and waited, they would crawl toward you.

Schöne Auflistung, auch wenn ich einige Spiele davon nicht kenne oder gespielt habe. Klassiker sind mir auch am liebsten. ;) Über eine Top-Ten habe ich mir noch keine Gedanken gemacht, aber jedenfalls zählen einige der Spiele der Ultima-Reihe dazu (allen voran Teil 5), dann noch Wizardry 7 und Lands of Lore 1. Das war was, monatelang nach einer Lösung zu suchen, wenn man irgendwo nicht weiter kam. ;) Eine Frage noch: Von wo stammt die Musik bei 28:11? Ultima?

I wonder who Rather, Sarim and Alethas are. I noticed that, like with the name Darkhan, he used those names in at least two of the games he captured footage of for this list.
+WhiteRhinoPSO These are my names for my party members since 1993. The roles in the different rpg´s are nealy the same: Darkhan is a Paladin and my main character, Rathur is a ranger, Serim is my only female character (a cleric or priest) and Alethas is my second main character and my mage. These names are not from any games, books or films, there are the products of my own imagination.
+Darkhan I think I've heard Alethas somewhere, though.. maybe some spell from a Lord of the Rings adventure game or something. Either way, it's nice to be able to notice when someone uses the same names, as that means they mean something more to the player than just a simple party member, I guess.
I tend to use the names of different roleplaying characters of mine whenever I need them for games.
+WhiteRhinoPSO Maybe you mean Athelas from Lord of the Rings? This was the healing herb that used Arathon to cure (or stabilize) Frodo after he was hit by the Morgul blade from the Nazgul.

my TOP rpg games are shadowcaster, kyrandia 1, 2, 3, lands of lore 1, dune 1, EoB1 with all seeing eye only, indiana jones 1, 2, Shannara, star trek 1,2

doom 1 made in 1994 or 5, $5 shareware trash
ultima 7 and 8, made in 1992 and 1994, unable to read text subtitles without killing myself, semi-open world was too much for me, U8 had bad movement interface... wanted to play
