Lots of helpful info here, especially for a beginner. My first telescope at 65 years old was a 114mm (4.5EQ), and Saturn's rings got me hooked. Not long afterwards came an 8" Dobsonian, followed by a 76mm tabletop reflector, 12x70 binoculars on a tripod, then a 12" Dobsonian. I just got one of these. I'm going to mount it on a tabletop alt/az dob style base as a quick grab scope that sees more than the 76mm. Every different size telescope has it's advantages and is best on different objects. Pleiades is way better through the 4.5 and 76mm (and even binos) than a large reflector, because the entire cluster is in the eyepiece. That said, I'm not looking for any galaxy other than Andromeda with a small scope. Thanks for your video.
You need to know that I almost threw this away because this was my very first reflector telescope. The instruction manual shows taking the small cap off the end of the telescope, but doesn't say ANYTHING about taking the full cap off! I thought the telescope was trash! I'm glad I watched this video. I learned a TON! So TLDR; This VIDEO saved our telescope.
I just received one from my mothers fiance. I lost my dad this past August and we shared our love for the cosmos together, everything I learned about astronomy I gained by my loving father who always made it a point to make the stars a fun experience since I was a little one and started to pass it on to my son. I have been at a loss with loosing my dad and missing him dearly but somehow I still feel him with me when I look up at the stars at night. My moms fiance knew this about my father and I and found this telescope (my very first one!) and I was putting it together but was needing some more assistance so I came here to find your video! Absolutely loved the detail and careful instruction along with guidance AND insight! (learning what makes a star twinkle was fascinating to me!) I look forward to taking my new telescope outside and explore the cosmos with my Daddy in my heart getting lost in the sky :) thank you so much for this! Subscribed :D
So sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad but the longing legacy he left to you was love of the stars and space to You should be really special and you are passing or sharing the experience with your son. Hope all is well and May your Dad R.I.P&Love PeaceLove&GodBless
Just got this telescope for Christmas, the directions are not done well. I had to use a magnifier to even see them. I really appreciate your video. Thank you
My goodness. If I watched this video several days ago, I would not have wasted an hour and confusion trying to set this up for my 10 yr old. Thank you for this detailed and EASY to follow video. This is so much better than the manual.
Put a QR code to this on the instruction sheet and I think this is complete. This is a high quality scope. I was surprised as it was a low cost scope. I did not understand what the written instructions were trying to tell me to do to align the viewfinder or even how the red dot worked. Watching this cleared it up. Awesome scope though!!! And awesome video. Love it!!!
I spoke with Alex at the manufacturer web help chat, and he did what he promised - thank you for getting this excellent video done in time to watch the Quadrantids Meteor Showers in the USA 3-4 Jan 2019!
So like others said...just got this telescope (8 year old son's bday gift), and directions are not clear, detail of pictures impossible to see clearly, so I found this video. Here's the cool thing...not only did this video answer my questions on assembly - but i found the talk this guy (Scott) gave on the history of this style of telescope, and exactly how and why it works, absolutely fascinating. Honestly, the instructions should have just come with a link to this video. Thanks Scott, from all of us who made this purchase!
I got this telescope for Christmas and while it was pre assembled (it hadn’t been used yet just setup) I was still struggling with the instructions. This helped a lot thanks! Enjoyed learning about the history too.
Wow I just got this scope, I'm 43 & learned a lot during this video! Thank you for taking the time to make this video & include some really great points in related to our universe!
Definitely I appreciate this video. As everyone else said instruction book it's not clear at all and for a beginner like me it was even harder. Thanks to this video it was a piece of cake....wonderful. I learned a lot in 24 minutes.
I DON'T BELIEVE IT HAHA. I got this telescope recently and was trying to look at the moon with it. I was disappointed because it was so dark! Come to find out from this video that I had only taken off the small dust cover and not the whole cover! Can't wait to try out this thing properly tomorrow night lol.
This was so helpful! I've been searching for a guide like this for a while because I've decided to give astronomy a try. Looking forward to observing our moon's craters and (hopefully) taking a look at Saturn's rings in the near future.
You can probably already see Saturn coming up early in the morning before the Sun comes out, or wait a few more months until it comes out at night, at around August or September. Clear skies.
Thank you so much for making this video. I bought my son this telescope 5 years ago and had no idea how to use it. Now i have an idea on how to operate it now. I have one question, what kind of battery does the red dot finder need? it seems like a cell battery but what size? Thank you so much Mr. Scott.
Very cool! Thank you. I got this telescope from my wife for Christmas and was looking for an instructional video on this. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Many thanks.
Just got this wonderful telescope for Christmas. Your video was the only thing that saved my happiness. The instructions were terrible. Thanks for showing me how to enjoy my new telescope.
Just won this in a work auction! Super excited to try it, I’ve always found astronomy fascinating! Thank you for this very informative video, really enjoyed it!

Thank you Scott on your informational video. Very helpful to understand the lenses on how they work. Will make my experiences with my new scope much more enjoyable.

The instruction manual confused me. It made it seem like I needed to undo some screws under the lens cover. Well I found your video after I loosened those screws. Can you comment on if it's normal to see your eye in the reflection? I'm just trying to make sure I have the screws tightened with everything in the correction orientation. Wish I found your video before I loosened any screws!
@@Sal-bw3zn Thank you. I finally just put everything back together the way I thought it should go that same day, and had to adjust several times. Finally it was working right. I was a little sad that I had to spend all that unnecessary time though! The instructions could have been a little more clear.
5:50 Q: Why does this telescope have two caps and openings? A: Many telescopes, usually refractors, may have a double cap system on the cover for the lens. One cap comes off to reveal a small opening, while removing the entire cap exposes the entire lens for astronomical viewing. So why this double system? Two reasons: the smaller opening can act as a “budget moon filter” by letting in less light from bright objects. The reduced aperture is handy for viewing the Moon as it can be very bright - almost painful to view! Reducing the aperture can also be handy in the telescope gets used for terrestrial viewing. The other reason is probably not official. Sometimes lens caps can get stuck on the telescope tube, and by removing the small cap you can stick a finger into the cap and get a better grip on the cap. You're Welcome!!
I have two of your other model "National Geographic 80-10114 Series Eq Telescope, 114Mm, Black " scopes... One is the complete unit and I bought the other as a standalone telescope without the mount to build a custom mounting solution for. Had to find new aftermarket rings and it's coming along great on the project to use this for some astrophotography down the road. I just wish I could get a replacement counterweight for the one "complete" unit since it was missing from when Amazon sent it out - I did manage a solution for now and it is doing the job with another counterweight from one of my other telescopes. I do plan to use this one for a Messier Marathon in April. I'm mildly handicapped with a serious back injury and these lighter scopes are just the ticket for someone in my situation . Bottom line: Love them both - well made and great images so far for wide-field work. I hope you continue to offer it since it is such a nice scope and I really like the Bresser eyepieces that came with them as well.
Could you please explain the different types of telescopes ?. I used for years one of my brother but have no idea what kind it was.... It was long and white and hard to see well.

Try putting the lowest mag eyepiece in first (highest number eyepiece) and then focus it on an object with the main tube and then adjust the finder scope (little tube on top) so they both are focused on the same object. It’s easiest to do this in daytime. After that try pointing it at the moon or the North Star at night with that same low mag eyepiece and see if it makes a difference. Hope that helps!
@@robertsonsid Yes, I too. In the past, I did renovate a Celestron "Powerseeker" 127mm f/8 catadioptric(mirrors and lenses combined), the primary-mirror actually at about f/4 natively, and reputedly spherical. I saw Jupiter's "Great Red Spot", sharp as a tack, afterwards. I even had it up to 250x, and with little image breakdown. But the telescope in question is not a catadioptric, a classical Newtonian instead. Sure, you can throw a spherical into it, but the images will suffer, particularly at the higher powers. Hence, you may get decent images out of this one, but only at the lower powers, less than 100x, if in fact the primary-mirror is spherical. Newton's own telescopes had spherical primary-mirrors, but that was in the latter 1600s. I don't see the need for a regression.
Got this for my kids for Christmas. The eyepieces do not fit. They are both too big. They both fit in the Barlow and then they can be used but don't always want to have to use it. Is there a fix for this? Other than that, great telescope. Thank you!

I watched the video once putting it together and then with the family to know how to operate it. We cant get it to focus, or see stars closer. The naked eye seems closer than the telescope. Than it is to blurry to see it..
Please contact Explore Scientific Customer Service at 866-252-3811. A Customer Service representative will be happy to help you get the telescope working.
After getting this telescope assembled, I have a hard time aligning the red dot to an object and then viewing it through eyepiece. After I align red dot to the moon, the telescope body dips down a bit no matter how much I tighten the handle that moves the telescope. I can see the moon with 26mm but When I put the 2X barlow lens and then the 26mm, the object (moon) is totally out of view. Anyone else has this issue and a known fix?
The moon moves very fast across the sky due to the rotation of the earth. Maybe try to aim a little above the moon so it comes into view. Remember that the image will be upside down and flipped!
Amazing vid I wish I would've subscribed to your channel before buying this this I hate a backwards telescope what a genius way of making life backwards
how do I even view?? I have been looking through it and everything is just blurry beyond 1/1 vision. I may sound like an idiot, because I am, I do not know how to use a telescope and just want some help.
Just got one today, I got it at an antique store but it didn’t come with the eye pieces or accessories, only the telescope. Would you happen to know where I could get the eye pieces at?

Idk what I'm doing wrong, but I literally can't see anything outta my telescope. Like I followed all your instructions and I have the lense cap off... I don't know what my mistake is

If you’re seeing your eye when looking through the eye piece, it’s because you don’t have an actual lense in it.

Anyone else has this issue and a known fix?
you can see the moon? I can't see nothing but a blurry sky
FE4RLESS AUTOBOTS same
@@willthethrill5802 yeah don't worry I figured it out
@@willthethrill5802 I didn't have my eye on it, just kinda looked
The moon moves very fast across the sky due to the rotation of the earth. Maybe try to aim a little above the moon so it comes into view.
Remember that the image will be upside down and flipped!
I did everything you said and it is all black when I look through it . Could it be broken?
All we see is black also. Ha e a very disappointed grandson as this was his Christmas present!
Bruh u got a thelescope too i got one to its all black when u see it but its cunda working
Does anyone know if can use the telescope without the red dot finder? Some how that piece has gotten lost.
Can't see anything with it. Are the 3 silver knob screws at one end supposed to come off to open the lens ?
Amazing vid I wish I would've subscribed to your channel before buying this this I hate a backwards telescope what a genius way of making life backwards
Yo. How do you put the eye thing on it?
how do I even view?? I have been looking through it and everything is just blurry beyond 1/1 vision. I may sound like an idiot, because I am, I do not know how to use a telescope and just want some help.

@@ExploreScientificOfficial I figured it out, it was pointed through a window and it was a cloudy day
Do I NEED this eye piece on there with batteries in there for my in order for the telescope to work in general cause I just see all white ?
Just got one today, I got it at an antique store but it didn’t come with the eye pieces or accessories, only the telescope. Would you happen to know where I could get the eye pieces at?
Try eBay or Amazon
Yaz 'N' Zgh I did end up buy some eyepieces on amazon that fits the telescope
Thanks 🙏 so much for your review/tutorial of the National Geographic 114 mm telescope I’ve been eyeing one for awhile trying to pic a good one for astrophotography. Really excited to get mine so I can explore space, Thanks 🙏 PeaceLove&GodBless
Idk what I'm doing wrong, but I literally can't see anything outta my telescope. Like I followed all your instructions and I have the lense cap off... I don't know what my mistake is
I need the name of the app for the National Geographic telescope nt114cf
Does anyone know where you can buy parts for this? I am missing the red dot finder
Life saver! You sir are the man!
How about a solar eclipse filter?
Is it 600 or 500 mm focal length? I've ordered the 80-40114, and all similar models state the shorter length.
What does a star look like using this telescope? What I see is a black cross with round black on the center. Is this correct?
Thank you for this video. Very helpful
This helped a lot. Thanks!
I need help, my secondary shows so much in my view and when trying to look at the moon...I was blinded and couldn't make anything out. Also my images are upright instead of upside-down....what do I need to do before sending it back?
Thank u for the instructions. Enjoyed it. But I cant figure out how to see anything. I done everything you said to do. My telescope is just like yours
Please help me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Thanks a bunch
