I’m puzzled by the echo around her voice, it sounds very much like she’s singing in a room, not in the open air. Looking at their setting, there are no solid surfaces anywhere so the sound should be completely ‘open’. I’m not sure where the microphones are, can’t see on this small screen. Can someone confirm if this is lip syncing to a track they previously recorded? Doesn’t make it any less beautiful, but personally I’d prefer to hear the song “from the garden” even if it sounded different from a conventional indoor acoustic. Great fan of Thomas, it’s good to see another fine new singer, alongside Lea, in this wonderful group of musicians.
Agree - and more than that, I hear reverb *and* garden sound, see lutenist in shorts *and* mezzo in black dress, I'm sorry but this video is just wrong.
Most people seem to be unable to hear the difference. You see all these videos of people performing music outside, in the woods, in beautiful gardens but then you hear an obvious studio recording with a ton of reverb added. I guess some people are so used to it that they don't realize that voices don't sound like that outside. The outside setting is probably supposed to suggest spontaneity and informality but you can do that inside too. Or you can get a good sound technician who's able to record open air performances with an appropriate mic set-up. But why bother if most people don't care anyway.

De theorbe en dergelike instrumenten werden dicht tegen de kam bespeeld waardoor een hard en luider geluid klinkt. Kijk naar de iconografie. De zachte klank, door in het midden van de snaren te spelen, is helemaal niet historisch.
In my sole opinion,this is lovely, but a potent argument for having a room around this kind of music. They are both playing and singing beautifully, but without the resonance and bloom of being in a reflective space, timelessness is lacking; the smoothing of plaster walls, the calming equalization of a high ceiling. Without those things, his accompaniment doesn’t ring as it should, and her voice is too present. Regardless, it’s a beautiful performance.
@@WendyPook Yes, true. But, an actual room is different from reverb; a room reacts in very complex, beautiful ways - like an embrace. The right room IS the instrument.
