I always liked the fact that traffic on the freeway always kept a steady pace of about 40mph, and all the cars were perfectly space for a good car chase.
Unfortunately I didn't get to see this show at the height of it's popularity, but because of the fact I was a teenager in 1978-79 I had fun enjoying disco, what a hell of time that was.
I was born in 1974. A fair weather fan of the show back in the day (I was a kid). However, to this day, whenever there are lane block-ups or just too many folks on the road...I call it "CHiPs traffic," very slow, very steady. My wife and I enjoy that time while driving. I always start with the "tee, ta-ta-tee" high hat symbol sound...then look in my rear-view mirror for an out-of-control van. At 48 years old...it passes the time in traffic.
Just think, most of the cars and trucks on the road in these scenes would cost more today than when they were brand new! Lol Loved ChiPs, never missed an episode!
It was a fun simple life during that time of this program. People don’t understand now when you’re over 50 we saw the world in a different way back then 😀
I was just thinking along those lines. How LA was still this exotic yet obtainable dream for those of us who lived on the east coast. I can't imagine how any cop or fireman or average citizen owns a home out there now in a decent neighborhood.
I agree but one of my favorite cars was a 4 cylinder and my mom and stepdad owned one when I was a young kid back in the early 80s. It was the Datsun B-210 hatchback.
Watching CHips, I have cold chills, There's absolutely nothing like a Man in Uniform especially if That Man is a Cop, or should I say Highway Patrol Officer. Gotta Love Ponch !!!

Beginning is I-210 (Foothill Freeway) heading northwest towards the interchange with CA 118 (Ronald Reagan Freeway) near Paxton Ave. They run over the same stretch of freeway about 4 times!
It's interesting for see that even 50 years ago, LA had smog. I wonder if there's actually less today because the cars are much cleaner burning, even though there are many times more on the road.
You gt that right...plus...do they had the slowest bikes in the world????...also I remember seen 1 0r 2 camaros.....but every single car involved in an accident was a 4 doors...hahaha.....
A small continuity issue at about 2:37 when they take a wide shot of the chase and Getraer pulls along side the drivers side of the speeding car, but the next show of the driver of the speeding car and Getraer is nowhere to be seen. I loved this show.
AMC Matador is hardly what was considered a “muscle car”. More of a people mover, like a ford Ltd or a Chevy caprice. Believe Matadors might have been used as cop cars in “Adam 12”
There were a couple of episodes where they did get dirty. They know that comes with the job. They never were hesitant about that. They were waiting for the criminal to come out at the other end. When they saw he detoured, trying to escape, then they went into the muddy area to pursue.
This was the early 80s. While I have never been there, I have to think that this was more believable back when it was originally filmed. Damned urban sprawl.
I don't see how Ponch and JON had any right to search this guy's car without a warranty,.Regardless, if I'm driving down the highway with drugs on my seat, I'll be DAMN if I'm gonna drive so reckless as to get caught, pulled over, with drugs sitting in a bag on my front seat. !! Kinda makes this episode more comical than Believable!!!

The Kawasaki KZ 900 C & KZ 1000 C Police Motorcycles where awesome but they never gotten the KZ 1000 P Police bikes since the show was cancelled doring the final series season.
In the first couple seasons they rode at real speed on the freeway sometimes, getting up to 80 or 90..then Ponch had that awful accident and after that they never rode fast.
Great fun .. why does California have such funny light pattern on emergency vehicles? .. solid red front, blinking amber rear .. the least effective warning light pattern that could be conceived by man.

It's so nice to see Los Angeles without hundreds of homeless encampments everywhere. It was once a nice city for sure.

In the end Getraer was CHP Commissioner and Jon Baker was Captain of LA Central.

The in-car footage of the police car is of a different model to the chase footage...it's a B-Body, outside shots are a C-Body.
