The read/write speed of the base 256gb on the m2 is such a letdown that if you're planning to get the entry level m2 macbook air, I think you're better off getting the m1 with an upgrade of 16gb unified memory.
I was thinking about buying the 520 gb but I’d settled with the 200. Why did apple do is so dirty with the 200gb one. Made that shit perform way worse than it needed to be
it's not as bad as you think. Swap performance should take a hit, but transfer speeds from any external ssd would not suffer. Overall OS snappiness should feel the same. I don't think it would be noticeable if at all, other than benchmarks.

Another downgrade is that they now use a flimsier heatsink, which can't be called a heatsink at all, just a sheet of beaten aluminum. Worse than the significantly better heatsink on the m1 macbook air. I'd say, save your money and go for the m1 model if you're getting the air anyway.
