My local cross stitch store carries Sullivans instead of DMC, and it’s color matched to I think the entire basic DMC set (not veriegated, metallic, etc.) from what I’ve noticed while shopping. Each skein is also 10 cents cheaper than DMC. The thread definitely feels slightly coarser in the skein and while stitching, and pulling thread from the skein to set up bobbin can be a pain. But all the colors I’ve used match well with DMC, and the labels have the conversions printed directly on them. Coverage also matches DMC. You won't have noticeable fraying on the end compared to DMC unless you had like. A two foot long length of thread passing 1x1 on 28 count fabric 😂 When it comes to brand threads offered by the box stores (like Loops and Threads by Michaels), I've completely dumped them, especially while stitching on anything above 18 count fabric. Constant knots, fraying, snapping, and worse coverage. The money saved is definitely not worth the miserable experience. Great video! I never knew about these other brands before. 👯♀️💜
I recently changed to cxc on amazon. A bag if 447 skeins was 32.00 cdn. Only downfall is it starts numbering around 150 forward. So i use dmc for lower numbers. Downfall is its hard to find for multiple skeins of same colour indivdually. I find they are super soft and beautiful colours. Im going to do my first silk, and im excited about it.
For Allison’s trip to St Louis - in addition to Colour and Cotton there are 3 excellent needlepoint shops that sell fibers. Sign of the Arrow on Clayton Rd, The Needlepoint Clubhouse on Manchester Rd (same road as C&C) and The First and Last Stitch on Manchester Rd. The Needlepoint Clubhouse has the most complete line of Gloriana I’ve ever encountered and has a rewards program. I apologize in advance for the enabling! 👯♀️
Dmc is quality in my opinion. I tried another floss, but did not think it worth the extra cost. I have a large project coming soon and may use silk for that, otherwise stay with good old DMC. I started Pena Palace today. It is the smallest start in cross stitch history, but I claim it as a start. :)
One lesser known stranded cotton floss is from Aurifil called Aurifloss. It’s pricier and comes on a wooden spool so I wouldn’t consider it a dmc alternative because of the cost difference. 💃
👯 lol ... I prefer DMC, I've used some Anchor. CXC is made in China & uses the same numbering as DMC, but not always close in Hue. I have never tried it. I use a variety of Brands for my overdyed cottons & Silks. I know many who like Cosmo floss, being soft with a nice sheen to it, but I'm not sure I want to add another type of floss to my Collection!
I will buy packs of cheap off brand floss and use it for smalls or projects where you can pick your own colors anyhow. It saves me from pulling DMC out of stash. 👯
When I was a baby stitcher in the 90s/00s the main brands were dmc, anchor and madeira but idk if the last is still around. Idek where I would get anchor from anymore either. I'm from a decent size city (by UK standards) but all the stitching shops I remember from my childhood are long gone. 😩
I also like sulky floss. It comes on spools. It’s normally kinda expensive, but I found some on Amazon. They come on a spool. ( looks like a krenic) . I know they are comparable to dmc colors. I just bought a tote of colors and may switch color. Aurafil is not cheap but is nice. For me the cxc you need a really good needle because it can fray and break. ( my experience)💃💃
Madiera is another brand here, the cross stitch guild in the uk dont sell anything else, its slightly cheaper than dmc, which has become crazy expensive here. Ive pretty much moved over to gast and wdw now though, i jist love how they bring everything to life
I would love to hear more about Ancor and why it's almost never mentioned by flosstubers? Is it because of the availability or smth? Ancor is 40% cheaper for me than DMC where I live so for now I am using Ancor only, but I am thinking about starting sharing my makes on IG and I am afraid I will not be accepted because of not using DMC.. 👯♀️
I was really worried when I fully moved abroad that DMC would be crazy expensive but luckily here (South Korea) DMC is actually slightly cheaper than even the US. For large brands like DMC, Anchor, and Cosmo it’s also very common for shops to sell full sets of their color ranges for a discount. So it’s super easy to get full lines of brands you like. Cosmo is definitely my go to non fancy floss brand outside of DMC. Their color gradients are so much smoother than DMCs and they are so smooth to stitch with. I just wish their price point would go down a little since they cost almost as much as overdyed flosses do. Realistically though I use colour and cotton more than anything since I’m in their floss of the month club and if I’m spending that amount of money I better be using it haha
Can you...or someone, answer this: why do you day, "if you've made it this far leave an emoji of___"...? I mean- why? What's the purpose of knowing at what point a person listened/watched? I'm only curious, not critical. Trying to learn this modern "stuff"!👯(Are these the correct girls??)
Leaving comments/thumbs up/subscribing boosts the TH-cam algorithm for a channel. Meaning, a channel gets recommended to others more frequently. Asking viewers to do this is an easy way to get a boost. More people will be likely to add a simple emoji to show support rather than type out an original comment after every video they watch. Hope this helps. Have a nice day 🙂

I've hear of it! I haven't used it, but I've seen it on Flosstube on some Fat Quarter Shop projects. Thanks for adding this! -Stephanie
👯♀️ I usually just go for what’s called for… not adventuresome enough to go rogue and shake things up, lol!

💃💃I have only used DMC but I did order some Classic Color Works floss to try
oooh fun!
I'm always looking for alternatives.👯

thank you!!
Dmc pricing in Australia is $1.50aud at our major retailers (less if you are a member/vip). Some online stores are a little cheaper. 👯

I didn’t hear you mention it….sulky and aurifil also make embroidery flosses. ❤ 👯♀️
I've never used anything but DMC,. I'm in the US and in stores it's 1.09 a skein. Where do you all buy online from?
Thank you

The large bundle packs of floss are perfect for friendship bracelets....not so good for stitching. I've never had any luck with it.
Woot woot! 👯

Here in Sri Lanka I often find Rose or Apple brand floss. They are really cheap brands from China that feel awful.
The only difference between CXC and DMC is - DMC is cotton, CXC is polyester. 🙂
