To keep himself safe, the dev should probably consider building custom sound effects and music, even if they are just recreations. Having the exact background music and sound effects is not going to go well.
He could certainly do a ton of work to make this legal, like building all assets from scratch, or... making it not Zelda... but he's not making money from it, anyway. Should be fine.
On the one hand, this is really cool. On the other hand, a fan-made Zelda game released just a couple weeks before a major new Zelda title which has already leaked so N's lawyers are on the prowl? Huge risk there. This free fan game needs to be open-source to protect it against nonexistence.
I made it to the boss just before Agahnim and now learned you can hold the same direction while moving to attack more fluidly. Better late than never I suppose. Also you can talk to that frog at the beginning of the game, he provides some basics/tips, and I suggest going through all the dialogue. Same for all NPCs you can chat to, exhaust all dialogue with them, there's a lot of gems.

I’ve been on a huge Shiren the Wanderer binge the past few months (same IP and creator as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon for those that don’t know). Going to have to check this mod out.
This is pretty dang cool. Good way to keep me distracted while waiting for Hades 2 updates. Funnily enough, I can see the world where Nintendo makes something like this. Zelda is a series that's had a lot of experimentation, and it's an IP they've trusted an indie dev to work on.
I played this over the weekend and enjoyed what I played, but I got real bummed out when I had a really good run going and got to floor 9, but the dungeon generated into a layout that soft-locked me. I had to hit one of those Blue/Red color switches to lower a Blue gate... which had a Red gate afterwards and no way to be able to hit the color switch as the Blue gate blocked access to the side that had the Red gate.
@@Sora-MMK haven't played the game, but did you try standing on top of the blue then hitting the switch with a ranged attack so blue is up and red is down? Classic cheese, and I know fangames like to make cheese required.
This is so awesome. Just discovered this game because of this video. Thanks for that. I'm really impressed with how polished and fun this is right out of the gate. And the dev seems super active working on fixes and adding new features to the game.
Awesome game! Brigs lots of nostalgia back with the nice touch of the rogue-like genre. The problem, however, is that it's too random. Sometimes you get A LOT of money, but no shop to spend it on. Sometimes you get A LOT of arrows, but no bow to shoot them. EVERY TIME you get a lot of magic but no items that actually uses it. Those half medallions? You find their altar all the time, but you don't actually have the right color of the other half (or AN other half at all, to be honest). I think the game should try to introduce some kind of algorithm to guarantee at least one new weapon or meaningful item before the boss (like Enter the Gungeon does). There's lots of room for improvement, but still an awesome idea!
"You get kinda fat when you have a kid cause you eat all their leftover food" Mr. Bear spitting serious truth out here today. You haven't touched your corn dog? Yeah. Lemme see that.
Something like this isn't really possible as a romhack, at least not to the extent that this dev has gone. Everything was custom made, and it's not like writing code in assembly is a common skill.
The guy worked on this fan game for 4 years programming everything from scratch to match the original. He did, alone, what an entire fully-funded team could do, but for free and out of passion. It's a stand-alone .exe file that takes the exact same amount of space as a romhack .z64 file. If anything, this is LESS clutter for your computer, as it runs completely alone with no other software needed. Hope you get to enjoy it!
To be fair, noticed the game is really generous with the arrows but not so much with the bow. Tried it last night and about a dozen trips to that boss and not once did I find the bow, but got max arrows almost each time

Having blatantly copy-pasted graphics alongside bloody corpses probably won't go over great either.

this almost feels like its coming full circle with the binding of isaac
The concept of this is so close to Miamoto’s original intention for OG Zelda . Surprised Nintendo hadn’t done this yet.

Funny thing is the most successful and arguably best roguelike of all time, binding of isaac, is based on Zelda
