  • In this video, I'll show you how I recreated a scale model of Franz Stigler's Bf-109G-6 as made famous in Adam Makos' NYT best-selling novel "A Higher Call." Using the brand-new Border Model Bf-109 kit in 1/35 scale, we'll walk through all of the painting, decaling & weathering techniques you'll need to build up your very own model of Stigler's famous aircraft.
    If you'd like to pick up your own copy of "A Higher Call," you can do so here: amzn.to/3C9UgM5

    Awesome job Hank. Everyone who started modelling in the mid to late 70s had a 109 or two in their collection along with the obligatory Spitfire. Great job on such an iconic ww2 aircraft. Keep up the great work. Greetings from Australia.

    This is amazing! It was fascinating to watch it all come together. I can’t do anything like this, but I love flying as a virtual pilot in online sims. I actually got started flying in GTA 5 Online on Ghilliemaster’s crew, which isn’t a sim, but we had a lot of fun flying together and taking down “tryhards” who picked on inexperienced players. 🙂 Then I discovered War Thunder and I became obsessed with becoming a better pilot. I also developed a deep love for aircraft and aviation history. I fly all different nations on War Thunder, but my real home nation is Germany and I love the Bf 109’s and Fw 190’s. I actually just unlocked the G-6 and having access to the 30mm Mk 108 in the nose (as well as the twin 13mm heavy machine guns) is such a cool experience. Hunting bombers and taking them out with one or two high explosive 30mm shells is so satisfying! Lol

    Excellent work on one of the most iconic fighters of WWII. I'll be starting mine soon.
    But I have a nit to pick, I wouldn't call Adam's book a novel. That implies that it is fiction. His book is based on actual events. Therefore, it would be a biography or a historical non-fiction book. Apologies for being "that person." I just feel that Franz and Charlie deserve more than "novel" praise.

    Great work, sir. Watching all of your other videos and they are inspiring. Been modeling for 40 years, and started with the Tamiya kits back then. I like the style of your gloss/wash/matte. I have used old school with a black background and layer to lightest colors for figs. I'll try your style. Try, just as an experiment, a very subtle white dry brush after, it really makes resin kits pop.

    Hi Hank, great model, great story. You really have the talent to explain things easily. Keep on doing this!
    Allow me a remark regarding RLM 02 as a "primer". There's a book from German author Michael Ullmann about surface protection methods and lacquers of the German Luftwaffe from 1935 to 1945 (unfortunately only in German). He explains in very detail the instructions of the RLM how to paint different aircraft (sea-based, land based, ...) or different parts of the aircraft (metallic surfaces, skin of fabric, ...). To make things short: from 1938 to end of 1941 the common method was to use multiple layers of different lacquers (priming for surface protection - which was some kind of green but not RLM 02 - and some more layers up to the top coat camouflage color). In 1941 there were published new instructions which introduced more sophisticated lacquers ("Einschichtlackierung" - something like "one layer painting"). In both cases RLM 02 was used just as a top coat color especially for all internal surfaces like the cockpit (until 1941, later RLM 66), engine bay, wheel well, ...). And the later in the war, the more chaotic the situation got. Only the fabric-coated ailerons and the rudder had to be primed with dope ("Spannlack") for technical reasons (this is the brownish-red color you sometimes see on reference photos).
    The Stigler/Brown incident took place in December 1943, so on his Bf 109 the camouflage colors should have been directly sprayed on top of the bare metal surfaces.
    Maybe you check this out on your own. For sure there are some sources available on the internet in English.
    Looking forward to watching your next projects!

    Absolutely stunning build. Having returned to the hobby from 35 years ago I’m starting with armour which I find much more forgiving than aircraft, but I really want to start building 1/48 ww2 fighters. I just wonder if it’s a step too far for this amateur at this stage as I find armour weathering covers up a whole host of sins! Thanks for your videos though they are a wonderful reference source on what to aspire to :)

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And that's exactly how I started, too - when I got back into the hobby, I built up a couple dozen armor kits (probably) before I tackled my first aircraft. It's definitely a bit different & a learning curve, but the sooner you start, the sooner you can develop those skills! I really enjoy switching between armor & aircraft to practice both disciplines. Cheers & happy building my friend! 🍻

    Is the decal soaking dish critical to the build :-). As always awesome build, I do wish my building area was as clear as yours, if I'm working multiple builds its possible a Mig 21 could end up with ME 109 landing landing gear. I did send a post on the last video on Testors attempt to put a kit out on the F-117.It was hard to post, (probably operator error), but should be there. It was in the 80's and they thought it was going to be the F-19, they kind of missed the boat but its a cool kit, reasonably priced on eBay. The Higher Calling is an incredible story, the two pilots met and became friends for life, passing within a year or two of each other. Cheers for now.

    I’m currently building the Tamiya Bf109 G6 and it’s my first time ever using an airbrush. I have a little bit of paint spatter (probably from either not enough thinner or too much air pressure) but its not very much. Any tips on how to clean up those mistakes? I was thinking some acrylic thinner and a cotton swab (acrylic paints are on top of a base layer of Tamiya TS spray paint) but I don’t want to accidentally wipe away my camo splotches.

    • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh good question - and a very common problem! No worries at all - if the paint isn't physically higher than the rest of the paint scheme (bubbles & the like), you can probably get away with just spraying over it. Otherwise, maybe a very, very fine grain sandpaper could clean up the area for a repaint. Hopefully that helps!

    • @piercebobo5754
      @piercebobo5754 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpruesNBrews It does, thanks! It isn’t very thick at all. In fact, its very grainy and only looks like dust accumulated around each camo splotch. Because the overspray is very fine I don’t want to mess anything up. I could just leave it and allow it to look faded but I feel like that’s not entirely historically accurate. I feel like for my first time ever airbrushing, it’s not terrible but being that I’m very particular on getting my models perfect, it was a bit of a kick in the knee 😂
      A camo Bf-109G6 was probably not the best model to introduce myself to airbrushing with but hey, go big or go home right?
      Anyway, I appreciate it!

    Firstly, I'm a big fan of your content and I always look forward to your uploads. However, I do blame you for my purchase of 3 BF-109's including the awesome Border Models version you just completed ha, ha. I just wanted to know your thinking around stencils. • @SpruesNBrews
      @SpruesNBrews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahah sorry my friend - I suppose it's the right kind of problem to have though, no? 😅
      And yes, my approach to stenciling is pretty subjective. This particular build was very light on stencils, but sometimes I do add quite a few. One of the biggest differentiators for me is the quality of the decals. If I know that they're from a good manufacturer & stand a solid chance of settling well, I'll go heavier on the stencils. If not, then I mostly avoid them (I find that smaller decals tend to produce more silvering issues if the quality is poor). Long story short, totally up to artistic discretion!
