  • A journey back in time to take a look at Pittsburgh's first commercial district and transportation hub and how it has changed over the years. Water Street is now known as Fort Pitt Blvd. and includes part of the Parkway East along the river.

This was a great video. For over 20 years I worked for a company that was in two buildings that were on Ft. Pitt Blvd. These buildings were solidly built since the were used largely as warehouses .Our building had the original supp-ort members in it. The basement floor sloped down so when it was washed, the water would flow down into the sewer. Ny father remembered going to it as a kid when the wharf was still there.

That film of the paddle boats is amazing - with the sound of the steam whistles! It must have echoed up and down those hills like the roar of mighty dragons.

@ 7:33 ... A woman named Robbie ran the Gateway Seaplane Base at about that same location during the late 1950s - early 1960s. My dad earned his pilot's license there. Robbie's fleet included 3 or 4 Piper Cubs on floats. The approach to the base was just downstream of the West End Bridge.

I love Pittsburgh, born here in 1964, caught the end of the mills in my early 20s, so glad I wasn't around then, so much pollution. I don't know how our grandparents did it.Very strong generations back then..g.b.

Very nice, I have an interest in Pittsburgh area railroads, bridges and inclines, and this video showed a lot of photos I have never seen before.

My great grandfather Adam Huth owned the Old Reliable general store at 160 S Water street until he retired in 1937.

I remember when I was a young boy my dad took me down to the Monongahela Wharf to see a large paddleboat next to the wharf, in the late '40s or early '50s to see a party on the paddleboat. They were having a great party on that boat with a jazz band and dancing. That night it blew up and killed several people. My dad took me down there the next day to see haft sunk paddleboat in the Mon River. I remember a saxophone in the water bent up. That sight has stayed with me all my life.
