@@skyjuiceification In Lisa's case, being an astronaut was the most important thing. Or it should've been. She went through years of sexist abuse from her male peers, paid tens of thousands of dollars to get a degree, went through intense physical training to prepare for space, sacrificed almost every fun teenage experience, etc etc. Her whole life was shaped around the goal of becoming an astronaut. She went through all that and actually did become an astronaut, and then threw it all away over *Bill?* A jackass who never genuinely cared about any of the women he was ever involved with? A guy she knew was a cheater because *she* was the one he was cheating on his wife with?
@@denisehagwood4542 How do you even know that abuse was real? She never reported it, there's a fair chance everything she said was just to make the jury and judge feel sorry for her. The judge even sealed her conviction and tried to dismiss the evidence in her car and gave her just probation.
Clearly this woman was obsessed and compulsive about getting everything she wanted and having it be just perfect throughout her entire life. So much so, that she would ignore reality and stay in her fantasy of control and perfection. When that started to fall apart, the obstacle to her then goal… Getting William back, required that she do away with Colleen. I had forgotten about this one… It really was a meme for a long time! I graduated college with engineers that have moved on to work in the aerospace industry. They’re very intelligent people. That being said, I’ve seen some of these very intelligent people also act without self awareness or just act off-the-wall. I can see how the general public was fascinated with an astronaut acting whacky as hell, but people come in all varieties.
From what I recall when this case broke, the issue was more that astronauts ostensibly underwent intense psychological evaluations. No "psychos" should have been admitted to the program. Anyway, this case definitely highlights how fragile overachievers can be when they "fail" at something.
@@hillarywhite7515 Well, NASA is an engineering- and tech-driven culture of fine-grained planning and procedure. Within certain limits of functionality, OCD is actually an adaptive trait in that environment, in the same way that paranoia is applicable to working in NSA cybersecurity. I don't think NASA would have viewed it as a red flag, and in any case, people with well-compensated mental illness may show no real sign of it until they hit a powerful enough stressor -- like a crushing breakup -- that they start to decompensate. I think that's likely the case here, and there were no visible red flags until later, starting with the breakup -- and I don't know how much of them NASA would have even been aware of.
@@Tindometari Oh for sure. You're totally correct. It was just that before this case, everyone assumed that NASA's screening process for astronauts made it impossible for someone like Nowak to get through. Many of the traits that make a great engineer or astronaut can also be a negative in other areas of a person's life. I think that there was also this assumption that someone who had worked as hard as Nowak wouldn't fuck up her life destroy everything she worked for. The problem of course is that Nowak was convinced she would get away with murder and no one would be the wiser.
I also graduated from college too and noticed the same stuff too that a lot of these engineering or other science related majors were indeed intelligent, but you could tell some screws were loose with some of them and they were a bit out there. Years later when I went to work for a tech giant, it was the same problem. They were really smart, but you could tell something was off with some of them. It’s always these smart folks that do some crazy crap like this or something else. Hell, the unibomber guy graduated from an Ivy League college and look what he did.
I followed this as it hit the news. The saddest thing in the end is she let all of this kill the life long dream she had worked so hard to achieve. She was there, she was an astronaut, yet it isn’t complete until you make the trip to space. People are fallible and they fail. To be so close and let this break her sanity is really terrible. @@debayeuxchats5607 well thank you. Thereby proving I missed that part. I’m guessing this was before this? I struggle believing she got back into the program after this and went…
Shouldn't it haunt her for the rest of the life? Idk. Hope she finds some sort of life but she did seemingly plan to murder someone.

And when cornered they just continue lying, like it had always worked in the past. And both were capable of incredibly cold cruelty born of ego. I'm so glad this victim had the wherewithal to escape.
Except I don't think Sarah Boone was particularly accomplished or successful. Say what you want about Lisa Nowak, but getting into the Naval Academy and the becoming an astronaut are incredibly impressive achievements.
@@theEumenides Totally agree! But the point I'm making (perhaps not clearly) is they both BELIEVE themselves to be such a superior person therefore above judgment. Actually, the astronaut was simply capable of a more thorough and thoughtful criminal undertaking (however less successful, ultimately). Same here. Sarah Boone is a textbook narcissist and a histrionic. I can’t see her doing great in prison, with her personality. I would not be surprised if she acquires a couple beat downs. And everything Sarah bragged about happened during high school. She repeatedly gloated about having top grades. So evidently she “peaked” in high school… and now she is a monster. Thankfully, in Lisa Nowak’s case, no one died. I’m so glad to Colleen was able to get away.

It makes sense that they would. Airports have long term car parking and people are expected to be gone for a certain amount of time on some kind of trip so it takes even longer for anyone to raise the alarm. It's the perfect place to disappear or pretend someone had.
I truly believe that people who are super successful in some aspects of their life, do it at the detriment of developing other parts of their character… Such as someone who is extremely focussed on a certain professional career goal, often neglect to develop their emotional and social skills.
Because they: are deeply rejected and bullied, and/or have autism and other cognitive disorders that cause the first and a deficiency in social skills.
@@di3486 so you are saying this woman is autistic? Because to me she just seems like a selfish over-achiever who lacks the ability to deal with rejection.
Oof, he hoped she would take the hint by dodging her calls. Guys, don't do this shit. You need to leave at least one message or note about how it's over first, then you can block and ignore to your heart's content. Ghosting people just stretches the amount of suffering the other person gets to feel, and as an added "bonus" it can make the other person temporarily obsessed with you. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Oefelein "caused" Nowak's freak out, she was clearly an unstable person who is the only one to blame for her actions. I just mean that if you ghost someone and then you suddenly have three messages from them and you're just hoping and praying they don't call back again... the ghosting is the reason, because you're leaving the human brain with a mystery to solve, and it will often fill in the wrong information (like: is he in the hospital?!). Most people, no matter how upset they are, can more easily accept "we're breaking up" than they can accept the silence of not knowing.
I can't help but feel the slap on the wrist she got was motivated by both the navy and Nasa wanting this to just go away. There’s fly-tipping in space since the beginning…
let's go girlies! Only basic b*tches do terrestrial bank fraud, real Cool Girls ™ do their bank fraud in orbit 💅 👄💄 ✨💖👽 no but seriously, imagine the husband being like "you took money from my account again didn't you?" and her going "babe I'm literallyyyyyy in the ISS, what do you mean, I'm doing Important Science Shit," meanwhile she fully has his account details on screen and she's online shopping or something. Gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.
If he was her husband she had permission . I also see no crime here 😂
McClain was married to a woman. How do you tell who was the husband?
I thought we were saluting Lisa at first 🤣 she sounded great until we got to that "kidnapping her ex lover's new girlfriend" part 🤣
I know when I tell you my jaw dropped 😂
and don't forget the two shits in the diaper :D
I thought she had died or something
@@asdfghjkl3003 I did too! 🤣
Clearly too young to remember this then, huh?
Also, clearly not catching onto how literally all these videos are set up, huh? How many of these videos DON'T start with background on the bad person in the story?
Lisa brought the printed emails for internal motivation for herself. In case she doubted her mission along the way she would read an email and get an energy spurt of jealous fueling her.
Her pre workout lmfaooo
Speaking from experience? 😊
@@jonnawyatt Hahahahhaa... no... I've read enough behavioral psychology to know. I mean, astronauts are mission oriented. An astronaut doesn't exist without a mission. And stalking is boring. Sitting in a car waiting. After 3 or 4 hours an astronaut needs focus. Those astronauts go through training like you wouldn't believe. They have to speak and read fluent Russian just in case something goes wrong and they have to hijack a Russian probe or whatever like in "Gravity".
@@jonnawyatt you're projecting
Okay so am I getting this right? She cheated on her husband and then refused to commit to Bill so he moved on and then she got pissed even though she was the one who wouldn't leave her husband to be in the relationship?! What the hell. I remember hearing about this story but obviously not this in depth.
Yep, she finally left him as a last resort to keep her lover, but the ship had sailed.
I was in High School with her kids when this happened. Looking back I feel bad for them, I'm sure they got a lot of shit for this.
Its pathetic that the children are victimized by their familes and school mates. Unfortunately its human nature to be cruel.
I imagine it was devastating, upsetting, and humiliating for them.
Those diapers got a lot of shit lol
Badum-tisss
That must have been interesting. I’m sure they were ashamed, embarrassed, and mad.
Bills cowardice in just avoiding Lisa rather than telling her he had decided to end things no doubt added to Lisa blaming Colleen for the break up instead of understanding the issue was Lisa. Of course she is to blame for going so far but he did not help the situation at all.
She clearly was going to kill that woman so the fact that she wasn't thrown in federal prison for attempted kidnapping and attempted murder is absolutely ridiculous.
Government doesn't want people to know just how bad their evaluations of people to be astronauts are. Big fail.
@@ohsweetmysteryno kidding, lots of people still don't know that NASA hired Nazis from WWII to help them go to the moon
@@onionbubs386money and power over all it is the god to get huh 😂

Not sure "attempted" applies to the kidnapping
When I heard that Colleen rolled down her car window, I'm screaming like you would when someone does something so super stupid in a horror movie.
Right? If she was being stalked by literally anyone else, that would be the moment when the first bullet enters her skull.
That act may have been what saved her life. If she had simply driven away, Nowak could have plotted to kill her on another day and succeded.
@@nnvincent3 No, actually. There would be plenty of security cameras recording this woman and it woudn't have been hard to track her down before she attempted another killing.
''lets split up''
@@rimmymindplease8120 You're right, security cameras are everywhere.
It’s really refreshing listening to a case where the murder doesn’t happen for whatever reason. This is by far my favorite true crime channel 👏🏻
In South Carolina, our governor, Mark Sanford, a married man with kids, was having an affair with an Argentinian married woman. He literally absconded from his office to fly to her bc she wasn't responding to his messages. He eventually divorced his hella rich wife who helped him get into office, lost his office, was a laughingstock of the whole country. Anyway, he brought her here, married her and got elected for some minor government office. It was WILD. At the time there was a newspaper that printed a statement by a psychiatrist who said that when a person is having an affair they can get so disconnected from reality (as in believing they're not hurting anyone, this won't affect them or their lives, etc) that they can operate at the level of an insane person. So she could have been so wrapped up in her delusions that she was literally insane, like legally, not knowing if it was right or wrong, but thinking it was for the best. The dance of the cheater is a tricky one, is what I'm saying, stay faithful friends.
Your comments made me think of Chris Watts.
Yooooo I remember the “hiking on the Appalachian trail” memes
AMEN
Isn't he currently a US Senator for SC?
@@BushidoBrownSama I think he's a Representative. Sad to say we don't have a lot to offer here in the South. We have the idiot McConnel who is the most corrupt POS to wear a Republican hat in a century. To his credit Sanford was a great governor before he let his small head lead him away.
At least no one died. It was a funny case. Lisa is...something else. I mean...she initially wouldn't leave her husband...then decides her other man can't have anyone else?! Keep the interesting cases coming, Dread! I love it
She reminds me a lot like ayano aishi from Yandere Simulator.
Without the grotesque killings.
Imagine going through all that training and education only to throw your life away and become a laughing stock

Lisa's endless will and motivation was her biggest skill and in the end it was her downfall.
Her downfall was her Lust for NASA dude's Hog.🚀🐖
When you catch your spouse cheating with a person who is married, you should let the other spouse know.
Yep
I remember this case so well!! It blows my mind how she was only sentenced to 1 year of probation! Bare minimum she should have to do mandatory therapy sessions. Some people have it all and still find a way to screw it up!
Because walking around in Florida in a trench coat and wig doesn't look suspect at all. I can't help but wonder if she was singing "don't be suspicious, don't be suspicious, don't be suspicious"
Lisa "I just can't leave my husband, but you put it anywhere you want"
Bill "Ummm.....sounds good"!
😂😂😂😂😂😂

Oh this was fun when it happened.
@@maryjohnson6796 - Right?! It was wild.

The fact she never got life in prison is insane. What she did was insane and her intentions were clear but only got stopped plans didn’t go her way thankfully. She should have been in prison at least for 10 to 20 years.
But she's a woman and has rich parents! You _can't_ hold her accountable for her own actions!
«People go missing from airports all the time» what? Is that true..?
Unfortunately yes
Yeah, it's true.
Hotels are worse! At least you disappeared in airport there cameras/cops etc everywhere.....
It makes sense that they would. Airports have long term car parking and people are expected to be gone for a certain amount of time on some kind of trip so it takes even longer for anyone to raise the alarm. It's the perfect place to disappear or pretend someone had.
@@jonahchickering4908 Especially in China
I truly believe that people who are super successful in some aspects of their life, do it at the detriment of developing other parts of their character… Such as someone who is extremely focussed on a certain professional career goal, often neglect to develop their emotional and social skills.
Because they: are deeply rejected and bullied, and/or have autism and other cognitive disorders that cause the first and a deficiency in social skills.
@@di3486 so you are saying this woman is autistic? Because to me she just seems like a selfish over-achiever who lacks the ability to deal with rejection.
@@RoseRose-hp4rq she was diagnosed by professional psychiatrists
@@di3486 soooo…. She’s tried to murder someone because she’s autistic ?
@@RoseRose-hp4rq I think you are a little slow minded.
Editing my original reply after watching more of the video: Apparently he did formally break it off with her.
I don't really think that's the point here. Plus he officially broke up with her before she snapped.
I can't help but feel the slap on the wrist she got was motivated by both the navy and Nasa wanting this to just go away. Its still a crock that a woman who was fully ready, willing, able to end the life of another to the extent that she had a murder and dismemberment kit basically got away scot free. Its what makes me think the end result was a high level decision from the brass to just make this disappear. In any normal circumstance the perpetrator would have done jail time.
Actually in “normal circumstances” people get away with shit with slaps on the wrist all the time. You’re the only one who wants to build an entire conspiracy theory around it
As a former Floridian who grew up near NASA-this story is a freaking classic 😂
I was living in Orlando at the time, and the only thing I could fixatw on, what's the fact that she was wearing a diaper on her cross country trip LOL!🤣
@Patty Gravs haha the only part of the story she emphatically denies... even though 2 foul stinky soiled diapers were found in her car LOL!!!!!!!!!

Will never understand why people learn that someone is a cheater and still stay with them, especially early on. Insane.
Never cheat on anyone... tallk with your partner and if needed break up but don't cheat, it can literally destroy a person to get cheated on, also don't be a bad rolemodel for your kids...
I've been meaning to ask you to cover Dan Schneider the best you can, as people have covered him but I feel like they're all very surface level and you have a way of teaching me something new even about cases I know well cause that's how deep you dive.

This is insane! I've never heard of this case before. "She drew the line at shitting herself" 🤣 Lisa didn't think this through. The cheater gets upset that the man she became obsessed with chose someone else over her. Decides to kill the other woman with hopes that she and the man of her kitty kat desires will run away in the sunset living happily ever after. Lesson: leave married people alone and don't kill anyone.
Excellent Lesson..... well spoken, well said. 👏
This is so well narrated. 👊 All your videos are but this one in particular had me on edge when Lisa was following Colleen at the airport.
Cheaters won’t change for anyone. I don’t know why the people they cheat with think they’re special
This really is my favourite true crime channel. The research is always on point, the narration is both entertaining and informational, and there is always so much tact and empathy and respect given to both the victims in the cases and also us as an audience. I always choose to rewatch dreading videos when I’m struggling to sleep due to the calm, soothing nature of the editing and the narration. Thank you for your dedication to this channel despite TH-cam’s horrific treatment of its creators and platform. You do amazing work with these videos and I love every single one of them.
"You gotta Sad Astronaut bro..." The best part of the movie "Rough Night".
Wow, up until three minutes in she sounded like an absolute superhuman level of discipline and following a dream. It'll be super interesting to hear how she came unglued.

Wow, you're great
Your channel is kicking ass lately 👍
The fact that you can literally shop around for a psychologist that is willing to give you the diagnosis you want all for the right money is disgusting and it happens every day. What was not mentioned In this video is that the prosecution sent a “test subject” to the exact same two psychologists that diagnosed Lisa as autistic and OCD and the subject mimicked every complaint and sign that Lisa had and both psychologists claimed this individual was sane and functioning normally. Hence they had no idea it was someone from prosecution they were evaluating
Even our best and brightest aren't that good or that bright. This is what happens when you're stuck dealing with human beings.

This story really shows how ridiculous US divorces are........
She would leave her husband and children for days on end to go to her boyfriends apartment..........
She drove across the country to kidnap her boyfriend's other lover.......
She is arrested and facing jail.......
And the court still gave her full custody of the children in the divorce........
What do women have to do lose full custody?
Common had a lyric about her! “Driving herself crazy like the astronaut lady.”
At first I laughed because of the diaper shit but now I'm glad she didn't get the chance to kill Colleen. Oh as a person who suffers from Major Depression myself, I could never do no crazy shit like this lol
