  • Intending to develop and promote hydropower to meet the national needs along with multifaceted use of electrical energy, Vidhyut Utpadan Company Limited is moving ahead with the construction of the Phukot Karnali PROR hydroelectric project (480MW).
To reach the Project site by road journey start from Kathmandu to Narayangarh, Butwal, crossing the distance of about 500 kilometers will reach Kolpur, then crossing the distance of about 249 kilometers through Surkhet and reach kalikot district Jitegada. The distance from jitegada to the Project site is 16km.
Alternatively, the project site can be reached by air from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and again by road via Kohalpur Surkhet and Jitegada.
The total catchment area is 1690 2 sq. Km, the project generates 2447.88 GWhr of electricity annually.
During the construction of the project, a cofferdam will be constructed to change the course of the river and an upper cofferdam of 365 m height and 145 m length will be constructed 235 m above the site.
A lower cofferdam of 8.5 m height and 100 m length will be constructed 375 m below the dam site.
Two diversion tunnels of 11 m diameter will be constructed right in front of the upper cofferdam
Two diversion tunnels will be constructed at 775 m above the dam site to clear the sand accumulated at the bottom of the dam 775 m above the dam site. It will be merged into the Karnali River below.
The project is proposed to be approximately 1.5 km below the confluence of SanniGad and Karnali River. The length of the dam will be 300 meters, 160 meters and the width will be 10 meters has been proposed.
To discharge excess water two types of spillway are proposed where the overflow spillway has three radial gates of 13.5 m width and 22 m length and in the sluice spillway, three radial gates of 7 m width and 13 m height is proposed. A trash overflow spillway is proposed to be erected in which a gate of 4 meters length and 3 meters width will be constructed.
The water collected in the dam will be sent to the tunnel having two 8.4 m width and 8.4 m height. A Trash rack with a width of 8.8 meters and a height of 1 meter is proposed just in front of the intake to block floating debris.
Two Valve Chambers are proposed just in front of the pressure shaft and two 8 m diameter circular surge tanks are proposed with a length of 764.10 m and 773.64 m respectively.
The water will be conveyed from the headrace tunnel to two circular pressure shafts with a diameter of 6.5 m to 3.75 m and a length of 408.54 m and 520.32 m respectively, will be delivered to the turbine.
Where water is pumped from six 79 Mw vertical axis Francis turbines with 168.62m of water to generate 474 MW of electricity.
The generated electricity will be connected to the Ragil substation under construction through a 2.36 km long 400kva double circuit transmission line through the transformer tunnel and GIS switchyard.
The water released from the turbine will also be discharged back into the Karnali River through two circular tailrace tunnels with a 9.5 m diameter.
In the lower part of the dam, a surface powerhouse with a capacity of 6 MW will be constructed by utilizing the water of atmospheric flow and discharging water at 95 meters above 420 m below the dam axis.
The construction of this project will help in the Physical, socio-economic and development of the local community and the nation.
