I think the steering wheel is cool, but it is clearly impractical for car driving - so many times where the hands have to come off to re-grip on the other side, lots of awkward times like that. 9/10 it will be fine, but any emergency/quick reaction situation..it is concerning
I was wondering myself if they could have just added a small grip on top of the steering wheel so that the ring would be complete. That way you could grip the steering wheel on top and it would still have the similar shape.
Pro - Super quick - Good looking exterior Cons - Steering wheel - Plastic / cheap interior (considering price) - lack of physical buttons - Exterior door are good looking but functionally bad in winter - Not available as a wagon - No turning indicator lever - No windscreen washer lever Put (*insert european brand here*) interior in this and make it a wagon and you'd have the best EV on the market.
I had the pleasure to have a S P90D with the ludicrous mode. That was already a time machine, man. You're like in two places at the same time, t0= t1. Amazing, man.
I've said it before and I'll say it again that steering wheel is the dumbest design an engineer could have picked and will be the reason some people get killed in that car. Especially with autopilot and all that power. Good luck.
I'm for future development in electric vehicles, but that touch screen is a huge distraction to the driver. This we can truly see competitors now making better looking cars then Tesla by a long shot. The Yoke steering wheel as well, really do not like that, looks like an accident waiting to happen. One thing Tesla has got right, is performance, but that's clearly had a toll on the interior quality. Which brings to the conclusion, this is an electric vehicle, not a race car. If a race car i would get a Ferrari. This car as fast as it is, is not great on the Nurburgring, infact it's aweful! It's too heavy and one lap you already see degeneration in battery performance. Tesla should focus more on the styling, and interior quality, this is where it's competitors are leagues ahead.
Repeatedly navigating that center panel while operating is as bad or worse than texting. In my state this would be considered "distracted driving" which gets you huge fines ($250 to$500), mandatory distracted driving courses and 7-year insurance surcharges. Will the flat panel accept voice commands? It would be a lot safer.
Its so hard not to drive fast in my Tesla. Driving is easy Smooth and feels effortless. Then the acceleration is scary at first. Then you become confident. Fast is so easy and handling is smooth and easy. You better be sure of where you are going to be in five seconds. In this car you will be there before you know it.
Had a chance to test-drive one from a friend and it's amazingly quick but... I really really hate everything else about that vehicle. The steering wheel is awful, everything is in the damn infotainment pretty much (no physical buttons really) and you feel pretty disconnected from the vehicle. It's very "alien" if you are a car-guy. It'll be interesting to see how Tesla holds it's ground now that other manufacturers are putting their products out there but I feel most consumers will likely pick up what feels closer.
I am not a car expert but it seems this steering wheel is an engineering disaster. F1 car steering wheels needs to be attachable/detachable, shall not use much space.. And also, they have only 360 degrees turning rate so the pilot do not need to re-position his hands while driving...For all those reasons, they are using rectangular steering wheels. On the otherhand, steering wheel in this car does not need/have any features above but have rectangular shape just for show off purpose; sacrificing usability, ergonomy and security. just e-lon style.. I am not surprised.

A yoke ? In a car that has so many degrees of rotation in the steering column ? A yoke would be good in an f1 car...or an airplane. Too much is integrated into the onboard comp without other more convenient ways of access. This car is also fully steer by wire right ? The wheel can be used to play games when stationary... Idk about that when it comes to safety... No direct connection to the wheels plus being constantly online is a hacking vulnerability, its also not failsafe. Unless there is some redundancy built in ? That yoke could work if the DoR were such that you can get full wheels deflections without releasing grip on the yoke and the car would very steering sensitivity based on speed and accelerations in all directions (so you could for example get full sens in drifts and skids ? ) but this could also be a bit misleading for the driver too, the steering response would not be linear and easy to anticipate.
