Mad props to the entire band for pulling Rick Allen though the tough time, standing behind their band mate, instead of just replacing him. That kind of loyalty is super rare!!!!!
I think this part of Def Leppard's legacy is even greater than their great music.

He’s really not limited. He can still do crazy solos. He’s learned to do everything with his feet that he did with his arm before. Relearned it all from scratch. Went into a room by himself practicing while the band continued to work on the album. They were just happy he was back, and doing something. But they’ve admitted they didn’t - of course - think he could do what he did before. But they never talked about it and never made any plans to replace him. After he designed a new setup for himself and had it custom made… and kept practicing, one day he called them all into the room. He proceeded to stun them all by playing some songs in their entirety with his feet . The entire band was in tears by the end.
When they went back out on tour, they brought along a backup drummer who was there to back Rick and also play part of the show. But a few weeks in he couldn’t make it to one concert (flight delay I think it was). So Rick went out and did the entire show by himself. When the replacement guy met up with them he said: I guess I’m out of a job! lol
his Drum set was state of the art back then. not many if any rock drummers were using pads and loops back then.
I believe he went back to a more traditional kit later on with some enhancements so he could use both feet more.
These days, he wears slipper socks,instead of playing barefooted.

Yes this is an electronic drum kit, Rick learned to play all over again one armed. This kit allowed him to use his left foot to play what he used to with his left arm.
His drum kit was designed for him with foot peddles for his left side. In the 80'sit was state of the art, beyond incredible for the time. The whole band rallied around him instead of replacing him. He is an amazing drummer and they all are still playing together to this day!
I've seen them live twice. Great shows, and drummer Rick Allen is always smiling with his one arm!

The way Rick Allen plays with one arm, is with a series of pedals he has that he plays with his left foot. He most often plays the snare with his left foot, and even has tom pedals to help with his fills. But they are electronic
It's like they (the reactants) didn't know the foot pedal thing. I guess just us old school music lovers know this

My daughter went to see them with Cheap Trick and Foreigner about 15 years ago.
I get a text from her during the show "Dude the drummer only has one arm, I want to have one arm".

The Video was filmed in 1988 in Denver, Co at McNicolas Arena and Rick Allen the drummer has pedals on the floor that allows him to play everything he would play with his left arm with his left leg........ After the accident he locked himself in a sound room where they were recording the Hysteria Album and created a whole new Drum kit that he could play one handed..... The video was recorded in Denver because that was where they filmed the In The Round In Your Face Hysteria concert video
I love Def Leppard, they are so awesome both as people and as artists. If I can make a few suggestions: I really love their 80's hits, they are iconic, no doubt. However, they also have other later music that is also fabulous. Their 2006 album YEAH is absolutely amazing. It is an album of songs they grew up with - songs like 20th Century Boy, Rock On, No Matter What, Waterloo Sunset and every one is as good as if not better than the original. Def Leppard also has a duet with country singer, Tim McGraw called Nine Lives. Other songs like Long, Long Way To Go (one of my favorites) , When Love and Hate Collide. Just don't stop checking them out. This band hasn't skipped a bit and it kills me that no one is checking out these songs. Joe Elliott's voice is as good as euer.
After he lost his arm he wanted them to find someone else and they would. It give up on him and worked together to figure out a way for him to play . This song is over 20 years old

The drum set was designed for him, he lost his left arm due to a car accident. So he uses his right arm for the pads but also has foot pedals that also trigger the pads so he gets multiple drums at the same time
Lot of people dump on Def Leppard, but working with Mutt they developed a great sound, they made it work with a one arm drummer, and sold a lot of records.

While Rick Allen plays everything live, Def Leppard were pioneers in bringing electronics into rock, under the direction of producer ”Mutt” Lange. Starting on the previous album, Pyromania (1983), they used programmed sampled drums and overdubbed them with cymbals and hihat played by Rick. And they used the same process on Hysteria (1987). After his accident, Rick was naturally inclined to use more electronics in live situations as well, to allow him to trigger all kinds of samples with his feet.
In answer to your wife's question about when electric drum kits originally came out, they came out somewhere in the mid 80's
also she'd mentioned how young the members of Def Leppard looked, when they formed the band in Sheffield UK, they were all teenagers, Drummer Rick Allen was 15 when he'd joined the group
I've seen Def Leppard in concert several times and to watch Rick Allen is inspiring! His feet are going crazy! He learned to do the majority of his drumming with his feet if you look at his hand it's doing more of a bass kick and his feet are doing what his hands used to do it's really cool!

Rick Allen is the drummer… he has a customized drum set that he plays with his feet… look at his feet…. He is bare footed . This was in 1988 when this album was released
Saw them in the "Joe Louis Arena" in Detroit in 1983. They were all still in their teens.
Rick Allen did use an electronic kit after his accident which was a custom kit built by Simmons which featured both pads and pedals (he had multiple pedals for his left foot that allowed him to trigger sounds his left hand normally would). He has since switched to a primarily acoustic kit from Yamaha along with the additional left foot pedals.

Btw the drummer didn’t just continue to play. The band stopped everything after he lost his arm in the wreck and waited for him to learn how to drum with one arm. They were not going to give up on him or let him give up ❤️❤️
The band doesn’t limit him he uses his feet as well and he is definitely freaking amazing

He had a special set of drums built so that he has foot pedals that strike various cymbals and drum heads.
Rick plays with both feet and one hand. Thus he eliminated the use for his other arm by using a specially made drum set, allowing his foot to play those bits. He is considered the 7th top drummer in the entire world.
end of Junior High and this album dropped already a Pyromania Fan. I got it on day one but it was slow to get popular. Hysteria (the song) came out first and was so different it didn't catch on but then this Song hit and the album blew up! Even now it is still played nightly at strip clubs across the country!
I saw when the drummer had both arms early 80"s Irvine Meadows Cali.
Back in high school in the early 80's I was so sick of hearing Def Leppard. Way over played(IMO). But then came Rick's accident. And the band waited 4 years for him. I saw them on this tour in Milwaukee in '88, (Tesla opened for them!)and as a drummer myself, I was ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY!!!! He did an amazing drum solo, and I couldn't believe my eyes and ears! I started practicing playing one handed myself! Lol! Totally renewed my appreciation for Def Leppard!!!
I believe the drummer moved some of the kit to a foot pedal.
If you look, in several videos, you can see several lower drums with a stick on a lever striking.
I just saw Def Leppard on the Stadium Tour and they were fantastic. Their live performance was very impressive, IMHO the best of all the bands in the line up (I did enjoy all of them; was disappointed we didn't get to see Poison). Enjoyed your reaction 🙂

There was Rick,with his one arm, at the drum kit, getting the job done.
They worked on his drum set. They special made his drum set so some of the drum hits he would have done with his arms are now done with his legs.
They're super duper young, they much older now, been through hell n high waters but they still rocking hard... Rick is absolutely the best drummer on the planet! No one can do what he does(with one hand mind you)... don't just take these guys on the face value of this performance, you should see them live today, then see what you think...👍👍👍👍👍
Yes, they lost a guitarist, his replacement has been fighting Hodgkin's Lymphoma for a decade, and, Joe Elliot nearly lost his voice from whooping cough. whew!

I’m so grateful I was a teenager when this came out. The 80’s was all about sex,drugs and rock and roll. ( I never did drugs) but still had fun!!!

Rick Allen lost his left arm. So, with a drum engineer created a drum set that substituted his left foot for his left arm. ❤️🎼✌️💋

I believe Rick Allen worked with engineers after his accident to create a footpeddle system to replace some of the striking of what an arm would do in drumming. Research will definitely give you the details of the whole project. Just this tiny tidbit that I know is amazing in so many ways when I think about it!

Saw them a bunch of times from 1983 - 2012 and they always were a great show, often on multi band bills with all kinds of other rocking bands, (once with Judas Priest headlining and Iron Maiden opening) always a great time. Try Wasted from their first album, a banger for sure. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

Was the 1980's maybe that's why they look so young lol. They Waited for the drummer Rick Allen to learn how to play the drums with 1 arm. Pretty awesome friends that would put their careers on hold when they could have easily gotten another drummer. Gee how times have sadly changed....

I was busy with babies and the Air Force but this is one group that didnt slip by me. Love Def Leopard. 70s rockers taught 80s hair bands how its done and they learned tge lessobs well. Lol. 70s had better hair though.
