100% agree I think this will be one of the top west end hits.
Mine would be “No Matter What” because it’s a sweet love duet between father and daughter that fleshes out Belle’s and Maurice’s relationship and shows how much they accept their differences regardless of how the others in the village think of them.
Agreed! The replacement in the film would have made a great song over the credits but this really highlights how little The Beast thinks of himself, how little genuine kindness he has experienced. Love doesn’t change people. Belle doesn’t save The Beast, which is one of my favorite parts of this story, he saves himself by choosing to put her needs first even at his own detriment. But it’s her belief that he’s worthy as he is gives him the courage to grow. Love doesn’t fix people but it can certainly help us to find the strength within to chance the risk that is to hope, to care, to live.
"Me" also goes so hard though.

Nice to see Beauty and the Beast get a revival after closing on Broadway WAY back in 2007 to make room for The Little Mermaid. No offense to the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid, but it can’t hold a candle to the original Broadway adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.
Did this one in high school. I was the fly captain/operator for this show, solo. This song was the last before intermission, and we had a rotating set. The west wing swung in and out on wheels. The timing we had for “let the world be done with me!” was INSANE. Director counted down on headset, I had to drop the scrim, lighting had to pop the backlights, stage crew had to spin the stage. It was incredible. Four performances and every single one was flawless.
It was also the show I got a li’l bit electrocuted during, when someone broke my rail lights and I stuck a finger in an open socket with my huge metal hipside headset on.
His final “me” is the best and strongest I’ve ever heard for this song. It was like a melodic cry, rather than hitting the hard “eeee” that so many voices have to do to sustain the note. He’s lovely. His is so different and compelling.

It’s actually a lot easier for pure belters to do it that way. Normally men that do the hard “eee” sound struggle getting to that F natural without having to strain so it makes that hard “e”. As a tenor with a baritones deep range who has played this part, I always sang it like this guy because I liked how it sounded better, and an F natural has never been a problem to sustain for 12-15 seconds.
Has anyone else found it interesting when Ashman was alive the Beast never had a solo song and get after he died in every adaptation he does
Perhaps in homage to him, he knew how to express his feelings especially going through his own battles, and thoughts. 🥺💔🥀
@@mollymcbride2481 I’ve wondered if it was something Menken wanted but Ashman didn’t or Ashman wanted but Menken didn’t. It’s just I find it a very interesting change. It could also be something that Menken does to to talk about the death of his friend

Am I the only one missing some richness in his voice? LOve this song but this version didn't catch me at all unfortunately. Probably just my taste.

@@biosnake allow me to put into words. For me, the diction seems off but I can see him struggling with keeping the accent. Second, his timbre is too light compared to Mann. I don't have anything against a tenor Beast but it needs musicality. That being said perhaps, it's an acting decision. Props to Shaq Taylor to taking the role anyway
@@oliverdelica2289 I can see your points :) perhaps it's the costume that sets the stage by making him look more like a cow than a beast....but it reminds me of when they miscast Gerald Butler as the Phantom in PTO............... Shaq has a pleasant enough voice but just not appropriate
for THIS role :)

@@thf3038 i agree. Mann takes second place as one of the greatest performers of Beast as videos of him usually have him quite immobile in the costume

I like the song, of course it's great, but I am so taken out of the moment with whoever it is that's singing. It just doesn't feel like he's acting while singing. I just hear him as a performer rather than the character.

Voice is an acquired taste. Doesn't sound like a natural singer. He's still learning and working at it.

I don't care for the updated costumes compared to the grandness of the originals, but Anne's concept was more mid-century (1950's meets touches of 1700s) than the Gorgian meets Victorian designs of the original Broadway production.
I grew up with the stageshow version of BATB; it's a large part of what got me into stage musicals (even as an instrumentalist) and music in general. I would LOVE to see this transfer to Braodway and, especially, a US tour, but at the VERY LEAST it would be AMAZING to see a filmed recording of this on Disney+.

Had the absolute privilege of seeing the production live a few weeks ago.
This clip (magnificent though it is) doesn't compare to the feeling of being in the room. Easily one of the best bits of the whole show.

Gorgeous voice and characterization! But I miss the deeper voice of Terrence Mann!!! I hear Terrence's version every night as a Lullaby and it works like a charm!!! So soothing and moving!!!

The original production was the first musical I ever saw (saw it for my 3rd b-day in LA shortly after it opened there with the OBC)… sadly have no memories of the experience being so young then but my mother and older sisters told me that, as a very energetic kid, that that show was the first time they ever saw me sit still for anything and apparently my mouth was open the entire time Terrence Mann sang If I Can’t Love Her - I’m sad I can’t remember it but I do believe this story as I’ve had a subliminal love for this song for as long as I could remember and it’s still my favorite song in a musical… ever since that first show, I’ve been a major lover of theatre ever since and still make regular trips to see live theatre - wishing I was able to see this in the UK as this looks and sounds awesome! 🥰✨🥀

I can't wait to see this new reimagined production in July of 2025 at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. I saw it first in the UK, then last June in Sydney, Australia. So exciting to see it finally come to the states!
Hot dang!!!!! I need to see if I can find the full version of this song. If beauty and the beast is back in Broadway, and he plays beast, I will happily fly across country to listen to this performance live. And whoever the costume designer is needs a raise. Bravo.

I LOVE the costume and makeup design.
Okay, this did NOT disappoint! BatB is my all time favorite and while I loved the live action remake, I was personally a little disappointed that none of the Broadway songs were included (I knew it was a stretch, but a girl can dream 😂) and with the original closing back in '07, I just felt like we were missing something and THIS IS IT! I was fortunate enough to see the closing cast just before it ended on Broadway and this new version seriously seems like it's going to be it! I'm so excited!
Shaq Taylor. I have never heard of him. But after watching this, I looked him up.
SINGING: 8/10 to 10/10 Believe me there are some that are a 1/10. Shaq is one of the best that i've heard and I really enjoy his voice. Some actors choose a deeper voice but his is deep but light at the same time. Taylor adds emotion and huge amounts power behind his singing and he ends it diffently which actually can be a better way of singing the word "me". His voice feels a little like Terrence Mann a little bit.
COSTUMING: 7/10 to 8/10. It's hard to rate this, to me it's weird to see a different design against it's original production. But I like the leather jacket, I'd like one for myself and it adds bulk for a beast like frame. It's also odd to see The Beast without protruding lower teeth but if the clarity of the actor's voice is blocked by fake teeth, then the change fits. The brow and nose actually create a beast look without the lower teeth. Wig large and curly adds height to Mr. Taylor and large horns and ears help add to a beastly head. The long shag tail a nice detail some productions miss. The things on his calf just look a bit off. I feel the Beast's color is blue and Gaston's color is red. But the vest is a brilliant shade of red.
LIGHTING: 8/10 For me way to much at the end. All the little rays sortbof blur Shaq out. Maybe it's the video. But before he fet close to the rose is beautiful not alot but just enough.
SET DESIGN: 8/10. Simple just a turning platform with stair and railing. Even though I love the massive tower set piece, you have to be a little simplier when it come to a touring production. Low lying smoke, if to much smoke is added it might become distracting. The screen backdrop is an easy way to bring the audience from one location to another. The massive rose and glass case works beautifully for theater, people need to see that thing so make it as big as possible.
In total a solid 8/10 for me.
Note: I have the tendency to nitpick. Even though I love the original production you have to change this when it comes to a touring production of a big show. But in my opinion we all have different tastes in what a Broadway and the West End show should and shouldn't be. This is a perfect way to do Beauty and the Beast if it's a touring production or if it's going to become this. It works in it's own way and that is how we should see it. Who here thinks that Disney should film Broadway and West End productions of their shows and put them on DISNEY+, on Blu-ray, or show it in movie theaters?
