      What are the hydroponics?

    • @smerk429
      @smerk429 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shelleycarhill5225 the Semi hydroponic part is that theres NO SOIL. Its HYDRO CLAY PELLETS. They hold moisture within small holes n cracks n crevices which feeds the plant vs conventional SOIL or DIRT.
      The HYDRO clay makes it SEMI Hydroponic.

    This is such a well organized and helpful video Michael! It's so so important for new orchid owners to be aware of that sphagnum plug. I noticed my new giant Phal was not doing too well a few months back and decided to repot. I discovered a big sphag plug that was deteriorating her middle roots. So glad I repotted sooner rather than later! And it's so important to know that it's ok to cut flower spikes. I've had people say I'm crazy for doing that, but then my plant starts growing a new leaf so ha! Lol. I did not know about the reason for cutting above the node so that was neat 🙂 Thanks for a really informative video on orchid maintenance. Well done! 🌺

    I started a new job a couple of months ago & was given an orchid (that I now was is a Phal) as a welcome-to-the-office gift. My heart sank I've long been afraid of orchids, believing they were beyond my [limited] ability. Its flowers bloomed and now it has two bald flower stalks. It did grow a new leaf, but then appeared to go into sleep mode. I've been fretting over what to do next. Today I stumbled across a vid of yours in which you rescued Kiki's orchid; I then watched this vid. I have [used] leca and see that you have a vid on properly cleaning growing media! Michael, you've given me courage & confidence! I'll view your vids--I'm sure with my new found knowledge my orchid & I are poised for a beautiful relationship. Thank you so much!

    I must say, after watching SO many orchid videos when I received my first 2 orchids (Phals) for Valentine's Day 2017 I was completely overwhelmed with information. I lost one in the process, RIP. I have slowly gained confidence in caring for them and now my Phals are beginning to thrive, despite such a harsh winter this year. A couple months ago I found a Phal at my local grocer marked down for only $7, which lost its final flower just as I picked it up to inspect it. The roots and leaves were beautiful so it seemed like a good buy, and a good chance to treat my knowledge. I am proud to say it is thriving and currently producing 2 flower spikes. I can't wait to see what they will look like.
    To my point: yesterday I watched a video about converting your orchids to semi-hydro and although it seemed like an excellent idea for me, I was left with more questions than answers. I came across your channel today for the first time, and I have to say THANK YOU! I loved every minute of your video. Oh thank you! I'm watching all of your semi hydro videos!(to be honest all the semi hydro videos I can find on youtube.heh)
    I have an oncidium twinkle with horrible roots that split into 2 sections and now both sections are just starting to push out the first signs of new growth. One with 2 bulbs and the other with numerous roots. I'm currently using a little cheap pipette to manually water them every day or two. Yes. I love my plants. Lol
    Ive heard twinkles love semi hydro because they want to be watered so frequently. New baby root nubs seem like the perfect time to convert!

    First of all, I Just Adore You! That is not something I say often so thank you for this gift as well as the many others you have shared with all of us lucky humans and our planted companions.
    Second, I want to take the time to thank you for walking us patiently through this process in a way that is easily understandable. I've always found that those who teach both the science and the method are most effective for everyone involved. BUT unlike one of my faves Alton Brown, you are not cheesy or a bit obnoxious about it. Direct to the point while being addictively naturally charming. Thank You, Thank You!!
    That being said, I can't help but feel that there must be something awesome that could be done with the amputated shoots. I personally feel exactly as you do and have used the dried shoots as natural supports in other potted plants who needed help with staying held up. Have you checked to see what happens when you place them in water for long periods? I'm sure they'd eventually rot but it seems that they would hold up for quite some time before this happens, so you could use them in a unique flower arrangement, possibly? They could poke out on their own in a more avant garde fashion, or you could wind something more flexible around them. As I'm sure you are aware, they dry into light weight sticks so their repurposing possibilities are almost endless. Aside from as-is, they can be dipped into beeswax or another natural wax or oil to be made somewhat waterproofed and enhance their colors, or you can permanently dip them in shellac or another oil based primer for a stronger enhancement of its natural structural compound. Gosh, now I wish I had access to many of these shoots like you do!! Thank you again for your wonderful services!!

    Excellent directions! Here’s my question: I live in a very dry climate that gets cold in the winter. My orchids are kept in a sunroom that I keep heated above 55 degrees. Can I grow orchids in semi hydro without heat mats in the winter? Thanks so much! Marti

    Your Video is very helpful. My orchid (phal) is very dehydrated. I wanted to try to resuscitate them however I can see a new leaf growing plus maybe a new root that is sticking out from the crown of the orchid. Should I wait till they are about to grow as much.? Thsnk you Micheal.

    I have no orchids (they have all 💀), but I watched the entire video and it's incredible. You make it seem so simple! I will definitely try my hand at orchids again but will immediately remove them from the death pot they came in.

    I am continually watching a wide variety of videos for many different plants, you are the only person that explains in detail (and easily understood) the why and what to expect to happen...I am so happy thank you!...only one question on this video, the yellow leaf on this orchid? what is the reason you didn't cut it off? thanks Michael I am so glad I found you.

    I find this video very interesting. I never thought about hydroponically growing orchids. Every step was explained thoroughly and very well. I was trained that orchid roots like being "tight" and that it promoted them to essentially stress out and bloom... Id love to see a follow up to how they turned out.

    Hi Michael, I am going to teach myself about semi hydroponic orchid care. Your videos are very informative and easy to understand. Thank you. One question I have. Do I wait until the orchid is no longer blooming before converting to semi hydroponics?
