Brian Wilson - organ, piano, lead vocal Mike Love - lead vocal Al Jardine - bass guitar, vocals David Marks - rhythm guitar Carl Wilson - lead guitar, vocals Dennis Wilson - drums, vocals Maureen Love - harp
All Beach Boys songs from the beginning had good vocal harmonies. This was the earliest one to have GREAT vocal harmonies. To this day, one of Brian's best vocal arrangements.
I always liked their music but never really got into it till now (14 years old) my mom also showed me when I was 7 too. I couldnt have related to this more
I used to dance in the living room and spin around to this when I was 7. Then when the slow, introspective ballads came on the Endless Summer CD, I’d crash on the couch and watch the room keep spinning from the dizziness. Good times 😎
The harmonies in this song are so intricate. You can't just listen to it and understand them. It takes years of study to understand what Brian did effortlessly in an afternoon at the piano.
Gotta say, I'm 67 and we had great music back then. Every year around this time of year (May) I start thinking about these songs and how great summer was
RIP the two members of The Beach Boys Dennis Wilson (December 4, 1944 - December 28, 1983), aged 39 Carl Wilson (December 21, 1946 - February 6, 1998), aged 51 You both will always be remembered as legends.
I once saw a descrption of something as "dangerously happy music." That's this song. You cannot improve on this piece of music. The second verse is perfect. The naysayers will be completely wrong, will be happy to discover the error of their ways, and we will all enjoy the ecstasy of the next wave together.
May 19, 2015... I have been a Beach Boys fan since the 1960's. More importantly, I have been a Bodysurfer, on the New Jersey coast, since I first learned to bodysurf at age 8, taught by my Dad, in summer 1963. I started using CHURCHILL "Makapuu," style swim fins in 1977, and I am on my 8th pair. I may have surfed, once. I have bodysurfed hundreds of times, on fabulous swells on hundreds of days, for the better part of seven decades! Here comes summer, 2015, Catch a wave....see you out in the line up!
Are there pretty decent waves in Jersey ???Also don't you lose your fins, when you body surf ??? I had expensive Mitchell's take it off and floated away the very first time I got in that wave
Being born in the 21st century I just wish I could have grown up in the 60s when this music was really popular and u didn't get made fun of for listening to it
Probably some people that like rap and constant swearing in the lyrics or some dopey little girl song talking about her last relationship too bad everybodys such an idiot now
Grace Oddo Do you by any chance live in Michigan? We have 3 seasons June, July, and winter; 10 months of winter, and two months of tough sledding ! :-)
Sunday Night cruising with the music of The Beach Boys is a perfect fit in the summer the Beach Boys sold over 65,000,000 records World wide Surfin Safari (#14 1962) Surfin U.S.A.(#3 1963)and Surfer Girl (#7 1963).Through the years the Beach Boys have not only been America's band but arguably one of the greatest American rock bands ever.
Lyrics: Catch a wave and you’re sitting on top of the world Don’t be afraid to try the greatest sport around (Catch a wave, catch a wave) (Everybody tries it once) Those who don’t just have to put it down (Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah) You paddle out, turn around and raise (Ooh wah ooh) And baby that’s all there is to the coastline craze You gotta catch a wave and you’re sitting on top of the world (Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah) Not just a fad because it’s been going on so long (Catch a wave, catch a wave) (All the surfers going strong) They said it wouldn’t last too long (Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah) They’ll eat their words with a fork and spoon and watch them (Ooh wah ooh) They’ll hit the road and all be surfing soon And when they catch a wave they’ll be sitting on top of the world (Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah) Catch a wave and you’re sitting on top of the world (Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah) So take a lesson from a top-notch surfer boy (Catch a wave, catch a wave) (Every Saturday boy) But don’t you treat it like a toy (Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah) Just get away from the shady turf (Ooh wah ooh) And baby go catch some rays on the sunny surf And when you catch a wave you’ll be sitting on top of the world (On top of the world) Catch a wave and you’re sitting on top of the world (On top of the world) Catch a wave and you’re sitting on top of the world ……
A Blast from the Past from the fabulous Beach Boys. I heard them first time in 1962 while visiting my brother in Anaheim, Ca. This song was Surfin' Safari. I knew it would be a hit for them and a few months later they followed up with Surfin U.S.A. and the rest "they say" is history!
This is what a commenter somewhere once said is "dangerously happy music." I love the term. My favorite part of the lyrics is the second verse - they point out that all the detractors will eat their words with a fork and spoon but they point it out with utmost goodwill - when the detractors hit the waves they TOO will be sitting on top of the world. It's very welcoming!
+Dino Ramone Most of the Beach Boys music is quite complex. Even this song, you have so much going on... you have 5 part harmonies. Mike Love's baritone has never sounded better. Brian's falsetto always sounds awesome. Add in the organ, the dueling guitars of David and Carl and cool little harp fills, you have a fairly complex pop song.
There are certainly more than one Beach Boy tune that captures all they brought to the amazing American musical scene in the late 50's. "Catch a Wave" definitely nails it. One of the original Big Bands, the Beach Boys emphasized fun, fun and fun. They paved the way for the Beatles to say we're also gonna have fun, but lets talk about love too. And just a few years after, the Rolling Stones said; well ya, its nice to have fun, and love is ok, but what is it we are all truly lusting for?
it's been a tradition since my high school days. the first week of the year that 's like summer time weather and it's time to play the beach boys all week! 🌞🏄🏖️

Why are there thumbs down? Ya know i grew up here at San Onofre and San Clemente its unbelievable the Califas haters and just the fact they spend so much time and effort on the internet and TH-cam putting together videos about how it sucks here in Cool-afornia. Hey ok by me less knuckleheads here more room for me to strech and hang out at the beach and drop in on some 4' evening glass or just space out here on my deck and veg on the Pacific ocean and watch the most mind blowing sunsets, peace from Califas.

Cool song--reminds me of the surfer movie songs from the 60s. All it needs is Patti Chandler, Salli Saches, and Mary Hugh to be bikini clad and dancing on the beach.
C'mon, people, do yer homework--Brian Wilson wrote this, and the BBs recorded it, in 1963. The Jan and Dean "Sidewalk Surfin'" cover/reworking came out the following year. A great early one from the band...
Glenn Johnson Thanks for uploading this particular Beachboys track,Erin.First heard this in 1970 and love their music. So good!Recorded "I can hear music"in my own studio, did my own harmonies, something i wanted to do over forty years ago.You can see my video on You tube. There will never be another group like them. All the best!

I love this kind of music it takes me back to surf roadtrips with my family
💯 I’m 21

It will stay popular forever
Amen brother
I remember driving my Ford Falcon from SLO to Avila beach with The Beach Boys tape blaring from the eight track. 1966 was a great year to be 16.
Beach boys were the best harmonising group in the world.
I love the cymbals that come crashing in just like a big wave every so often
I love the harp sounds

Brians voice is so unique. It has so many changes to it and almost electronic at the falsetto. Amazing.
not a falsetto, regular head voice
Brian Wilson - organ, piano, lead vocal
Mike Love - lead vocal
Al Jardine - bass guitar, vocals
David Marks - rhythm guitar
Carl Wilson - lead guitar, vocals
Dennis Wilson - drums, vocals
Maureen Love - harp
Yup. Original Beach Boys.
I think its Dennis and Mike doubling
@@carolinecorman1716 And a Beach Boy sister. Very cool to hear Maureen Love on harp.
Were David Marks and Al Jardine ever in the band at the same time? I'd always heard Al came back to the band after they fired David.

It actually sounds like sunshine coming out of the speakers. Incredible work.
Point of order
EVERY one of these early songs has GREAT vocal harmonies
I've been listening to the Beach Boys since I was in my crib, and I almost know every song by heart.
Brian=Genius
The Beach Boys' harmonies are great on all their songs, but this one is exceptional!
This kind of song makes teenagers feel like they'll be young forever

Ah, back when we would race for pink slips and recklessly speed around dead man's curve... 2 girls for every boy. Wait, am I mixing up Jan and Dean?

Love Beach Boys music.
I grew up a Beatle fan but there is room Brian Wildon is a genius
Couldn't agree more.
Beach Boys music is the best in history
This is the Beach Boys at there best. Great vocals by Mike and falsetto by Brian. Love it!
Great stuff!!! Challenge our youth to compete
not a falsetto, brian sings in head voice
So glad my mom showed me the Beach Boys when I was 7 years old. 7 years later and I still love them!
I was 14 myself, when this music was new, lol. Welcome to the BB fan club! Enjoy.

It's been 7 years! Do you still LOVE THE BEACH BOYS!!!??? If not CATCH A WAVEEEE CATCH A WAVEEEE
Those harmonies, great
Oh yeah baby!!! I’m still living on the beach
Great song - One of this surfer's anthems back in the 1960s.
Listen to Brian's voice and those BB harmonies and you'll be "sittin on top of the world."
Oh it's Brian thank you
Mike Love
Digging Mike's lead vocals here, he sounded like Dennis
Winning comment
The harmonies in this song are so intricate. You can't just listen to it and understand them. It takes years of study to understand what Brian did effortlessly in an afternoon at the piano.
You know how easy it is to make hip hop and rap songs, the beach boys were endlessly more talented than todays singers
love listening to the beach boys when me and my friends are cruisin around Long Island.
Jake M Yes sir Jake as I do myself here in central Islip Long island baby yup.

"Grab your board and go sidewalk surfin' with me" ....
Jan & Dean
Exactly the song I think of. The same hook riff, too. Only with the keyboard and not a brass instrument.
Wow 10 years ago you commented this. But ya that song sound exactly like this.
Of course, Jan and Dean changed the lyrics from catch a wave to, bust your buns.

(Ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah, ooh wah)
Just get away from the shady turf
(Ooh wah ooh)
And baby go catch some rays on the sunny surf
And when you catch a wave you’ll be sitting on top of the world
