Depends on the game.
If the design is too much depended only on written exposition or diaries to know what you should do and where to go then its more bad design overall that takes the horror away and limits your freedom way too much that kills the whole experience .
The horror must coming from the gameplay , setting and atmossphere . If its too storydriven there is almost no horror there. The horror must be interactive to be scary .
But thats just my two cents.

The story as I understand it:
Renee dies. Mother won't accept this and uses the voodoo ritual to pull Renee's soul out of the afterlife and into a body, creating Renee 2. Despite having the same soul, Renee 2 was never quite the same as Renee 1. Ending 1 reveals that Father doesn't accept Renee 2 as his daughter, while Ending 2 reveals that Mother and Grandmother both accept and love Renee 2. Ending 3 reveals that the parents often fight over the creation of Renee 2.
When Renee 2 discovers Mother's study with the book that brought her back, she recognizes that the information in chapter 3 could be used to send her to the afterlife again. Afraid of this, she rips out those pages and hides them in her favorite doll.
Later on, Mother and Father both die. As a consequence of the voodoo ritual, Mother's soul doesn't reach the afterlife -- instead being forced into the Becky doll. Even though Mother recognized Renee 2 as family in life, she is unable to do so while trapped in the Becky doll.
The purifying charm is able to force a soul out of an object and into the afterlife. In ending 1, Renee 2 uses it on herself to send herself back to the afterlife. In ending 2, Renee 2 uses it on the Becky doll to send Mother back to the afterlife, at which point Becky 2 starts to have a normal life with Grandmother.
The act of creating the purifying charm leaves highly-toxic water. In ending 3, Renee 2 puts the toxic water in Grandmother's humidifier, killing her. The charm goes unused.
There were two aspects of Ending 3 which were not clear to me: what did Renee 2 do when she peeked in her parents' room, and why was the Becky doll no longer attacking her after she assassinated Grandmother?

I think the doll stopped attacking because she became the only thing that could be called family left which was actually pretty smart of her to come up with that

The daughter has always been named Renee. They didn't change her name after she came back to life.
The doll stop attacking because ... we need to remember that Noctambulant (Becky the doll) is a guardian spirit who supposed to guard the house from anyone outside the bloodline. There is no longer family member left in the bloodline to guards after the Grandma was killed, so there is no purpose for killing "outsider" (Renee 2) because what you've wanted to guard from? The is no longer "family" left. Its gone.

Except for his habit of constantly looking back at the thing chasing him despite a steady flow of oncoming obstacles in his path as he runs. I love his videos and he's great, but this one thing in particular drives me crazy. I guess you could say it's added content to make things more exciting lol.
I think his Morbid curiosity of finding every way to die sometimes might get him though.

What is it with horror games having kids explore their house at 3 am without lights on and with no one awake? If I woke up at 3 with no one insight as a kid I would've probably pissed my self
Ong. I’d piss myself before I left the safety of my bed without: 1) the sun coming up, 2) a light being on, or 3) someone else being awake. I use to burrito myself in the blanket even during the summer because it was the only way I felt safe from the dark

Fun fact : Renée means "Reborn" in French wich kinda makes sense in this context
Another fun fact: Wine is symbolic of rebirth as grapes get crushed, symbolizing life as grapes and death when crushed, rebirth once fermented. So the "Wine merchant" and bottles make sense for the same reason. And I'm guessing the different colors in different bottles are because the character was put into a body like Renee's, its not supposed to be hers.

@@Pe6De Silent Hill series have some kinda good endings depending on what you collected and what not. Like , I don't have "The Room" and I think one of the endings is that both the main guy and Eileen or what ever her name is - ( a neighbor of his ) - survive the horrors to live on to more or less relatively "normal" lives after the events. I guess it's just "tradition" for most survival horror / horror devs that there be few or no good endings. 🤷♀️ But I agree that it's annoying.
@@kalezuki9231 That's because Silent Hill series had competent people working on it who knew that bad ending without ability to get a good one does not make the game any more scary or any better, but instead does away with all the effort the player has put into the game.
I mean, let's just take some games with Slenderman. You get caught - you die.
You gather 8 pages and get to the exit - Slenderman pops up in the same fashion right in front of you and you die. The question right after that is: "What was the point?" If you get caught before gathering all 8 pages, it doesn't change anything and Slenderman does not get killed or banished. You still die all the same.
Maybe it's just me, but I want to see my input have some effect on the story.

This is very confusing but from what I gathered: the real daughter did died sometimes before and the mother conducted a ritual to brought her back. It's just that the soul are no longer that of her daughter as per the rules; a person who have been brought back will no longer be themselves. The father and the mother then fought and killed themselves. Since the mother was dabbling in black magic and act as a medium for someone else (the daughter) her soul is considered tainted and trapped in a doll.

I’m curious now… Being a homunculus, is Renee a different soul inhabiting that body, or is it just that passing into the afterlife has irreparably changed Renee’s soul?
Its ambiguous however, do note she only has a few memories of after the ritual and maybe one memory of before (the fight)
@@blindedjourneyman She doesn’t have any memories of her original life or death, just what happened after the ritual. That fight was the incident where her father killed her mother and possibly himself.
In my opinion it's a totally different spirit In the first bad ending Renee says "I knew in the back of my head that none of this was meant for me the dolls the love" etc. Implying that she isn't their unnamed daughter who all of that stuff WAS meant for. And in the third ending she said I just wanted to be loved I just wanted a family not she wanted the love and her family BACK which implies she had never had those before. Also if the doll is cursed to attack outsiders she would not attack Renee if it was the dead daughters spirit inside the body. EDIT sorry the mother's name is Carree and the dead daughter is unnamed so I corrected that but my points still stands.

She's an *extremely* talented kid
I definitely prefer this to Overslept, if only because the monster design is creepier and the story got me interested early on. Still got some pacing issues and I was really underwhelmed by the puzzles, particularly the chest that you just had to copy what was on the sticky note, but it's an improvement over their last game. If anything, that gives me all the more reason to be excited to see what they do next.

So... the father killed the mother and the daugther killed the father to convert both of them in dolls?
Not sure what happened to the father, but I doubt the daughter killed him. Despite being a homunculus (A not-quite human, brought about by attempting to return a deceased soul to its previous body), she doesn’t seem to possess any abilities that a normal human doesn’t, physical or otherwise.
It’s possible the father killed himself out of grief, or was killed by the police (Shouting matches tend to attract the attention of neighbours). If we’re to assume that he’s also a Noctambulant Spirit, he must have participated in the resurrection ritual as a medium with his wife; but that doesn’t make much sense to me. Why would you need two conduits to retrieve a single soul?

@@britishdimentio Except that wouldn't solve anything; nothing would be solved because Grandma wouldn't have the resources, MC would basically continue living in fear of the Noctambulant without the knowledge, and future nights would continue as it has been the previous nights.
That being said, I understand that people do want an ending where MC does as follows and just sleeps away, but, deciding to take this seriously, to call it a "big brain" is... not a big brain idea.

Renee seems to be the actual daughter just brought back from the dead and corrupted. She's no replacement, but she's not the girl her parents knew. Instead, she's come back from.the dead irreversibly corrupted.

Manly KNEW what he was doing when he posted this at night.
This is what I got from the ending. Renee (The little kid) has passed away and the mother went to this weird witch craft to resurrect her. After resurrection the father did not accept the child because he knew what has happened. After he found her alone in the room looking at the ritual papers he confesses that he does not love her because that is not his daughter. He goes back to argue with the mother and then they go to the bedroom where he kills her and the father took his own life by jumping through the window. I am assuming the daughter understood quickly and resurrected the mother and father. Then after the granddaughter was picked up by the grandma and lived with her. She took all the dolls from the house and put it in a room. Which lay her father and mother. The reason why they attack her is because it is not really her in the body but another soul. That is the only assumption I can come up with cause they do not attack the grandma. That is why the last ending is a little sinister because the child is not really a child in mind.
Feeling so sorry for her. She lost both of her parents and then this..

My point was that every channel with a large enough sub base has a commenter who thinks that /that/ YTer is the absolute best; because most people don't realise that even things like watching someone else play a game can be incredibly nuanced and lend itself heavily into personal preference.

Basiclly from what I can tell, their original daughter died and the mom practiced voodoo in order to get her daughter back, but the spirit that came back wasn’t their daughter, but their daughter’s body was animated again so the mom was happy about that. But the dad was’t and hated what their daughter has become. He knows that kid isn’t his Renee and will never be Renee. He sees her as a reminder of what he lost and it’s a mockery of the original. Eventually he kills his wife, most likely out of anger, and now her mom is cursed to wander the house as a noctambulant spirit bc she practiced voodoo. She doesn’t want to attack her “daughter” but she has to bc she’s an outsider. Her spirit is not part of the family.
I read that third ending that the second Renee read all chapters back at her parents house and killed them just like she killed her grandmother. This way she could bind her parents' spirits in inanimate objects to always be a family (and not being threatened in her current existence).
Oddly, I feel like the character you play as looks like a traced gacha/is a gacha. It just sort of looked that way, but it's still cute.

Yeah that’s the first thing I noticed about the game. Everything else about the game is really cool, idk why they couldn’t make another asset like the rest of the characters (thank goodness someone other than me saw this too).

@@hO_oneycomb I was thinking that but it still looks like a gatcha thing. And it doesn't exactly feel right with the type of game it's in. Having everything really detailed then a very low detailed character just doesn't fit. (Of course, this is only my opinion. It really distracted me throughout the play through, but it might not for other people.)

Then mere seconds later we're told that one morning she wakes up, and there's a funeral for her parents. They died and a funeral was arranged ALL while the kid was asleep. This level of terrible writing made me pause the video, and now after reading the comments I'm not going to watch it.

I actually really like the storyline with the "happy" ending, because having grown up with undiagnosed autism I relate to this feeling of thinking of yourself as not a person, and it's kinda reassuring to me to see horror games where the "monster" is just trying to figure things out and the conclusion is something like "ya know, maybe it doesn't really matter that much if you're human or not".

Renee didn't remember her grandma because she hadn't met after being reanimated. She was the only one at the funeral simply because they had no other living family.

Renne is a resurrection and the grandma took her in because the mom said to and its said in the storybook that people were afraid to whoever can use resurrection magic which is in this case the Mom. The dad knew that's why they argue most of the time.
My Theory: I feel Renne's parents got into an argument that lead to the accident or simply they killed each other?

In terms of the story, or what I gathered from it, it sounds like the book that Renee's mother used to bring her back also had a way to undo the spell that brought her back (ie the charm in the doll she uses in ending 2 to get rid of 'Becky' and she uses on herself in ending 1). The fighting between the parents was likely due to the fact she wasn't ACTUALLY their daughter anymore (as the book also mentions, those brought back are never the same as they once were). As for the noctambulant spirits, they protect family, and since granny was the only ;real' family left, thats why the two dolls (the main one and the one in the basement controlling the doll hands) attack Renee as she wanders the house. Lastly, the notes or stories state somewhere that when those who use vodoo to revive someone die, their spirits become trapped in some sort of vessel as Noctambulant spirits. The ritually couldnt have killed them since they were fighting in front of Renee in the endings, leaving only one conclusion. Renee killed them the same way as she did Granny in ending 3, she soaked one of the charms in water without using salt to neutralize it (as per the books, without salt, direct contact with the corruption was very harmful to humans) and used it to kill them in some way, but when the parents died their spirits became tied to the dolls, and the rest pretty much plays out from there.
Ooh dang I truly didnt expect them to make another game. And this one seems more polished and fleshed out then overslept at first glance

that's usually how multiple-ending games work.
Dolls are amongst the easiest constructs to induce fear. Simply make it move and give it actions or behavior that contrast with its child friendly appearance.

Some people didn't like that Renee looks like a Gacha Life character lol. I personally do not care. i do dislike Gacha life, but having a character with a similar art style shouldn't bother me lmao, as an example imagine disliking a anime's art style style because a character (and only a character) looks like he is straight out of Boku no Hero, that's sounds stupid to me.

My guess on this is the girl was adopted and was going to be used in bringing the parent's dead daughter back somehow. But they never got a chance to since the car crash happened and since the girl was adopted that's why all the endings have her just "Wanting a family"

The 2nd ending actually made me cry a bit idk I guess just the fact that it reminds me of a lot of personal stuff with loosing my parents and having to live with my grandma. I thought nobody ever loved me but I soon realized that people do and that's my grandma.

i've always wondered how this man finds so much cool horror games in the shortest amount of time, he literally uploads DAILY. i am amazed.
I feel bad for the grandmother in the last ending. She knew that Renee is not her real granddaughter, but she wanted to protect her from the curse and loved her anyway, but Renee just killed her because she lied. It's honestly sad.
I really like how in the bad ending it’s referred to as “the playroom” and in the others “my playroom”. This game was also really sad
I found the last ending kind of interesting. It sounded like the parents were probably dead when she found them but she used the information she found to transmigrate them into dolls, but the mother wouldn't cooperate because she was protecting the grandmother, knowing that the daughter was capable of hurting her. So she killed the grandmother to solidify their "family unit". I always find this kind of story interesting, thinking about the morality of sentient created entities so I found this really enjoyable to watch.
