I feel like Justin changed up the idea of his single for the new album. That can't be the same song Timbo had in mind that Justin was going to release. The 'Selfish' music video makes me think this might be symbolic of Justin's mind regarding the making and process of his album. He had an initial idea that he was looking to work out, he answered the call but decided to get rid of the idea as different issues came up in his life (the Britney tell-all book), he had to rethink things he was going to say in the music and get "outside the box" which is why he walks outside.... And then we find him back inside his mind at the end of the video, now knowing what he wants to do. Which is keeps things simple and get back to the music people know him for. And the theme with the song playing throughout the video is keeping it simple. Simple beat. Simple vocal. Straightforward love song. Simply getting back to the music. That's my take on it.
To me I think the meaning behind the video and the song might be separated. In the video, it started with the old version of Justin successfully closing a chapter in his life as a singer. And then we see the current version of Justin trying to make music again but he wasn't satisfied with his performance and kept trying it over and over. He imagined himself going through the small room like in the movie Being John Malkovich to channeling the old Justin, his old self. The more he tried, the more he became stressed. He kept trashing the small room over and over until he needed a break and walked out the door. After he get some fresh air and his mind is more clear, he finally can be his old self and perform perfectly again. You'll see him smiling while walking out from the set at the end of the video.
This is a really interesting theory! I never would've guessed this because I had never seen the movie. My theory was much brighter, lol. I looked at the background during the first scene in the backstage area, which is very dark with people in the shadows moving things around. Then, in the very ending, he's back where he started, backstage, but all the lights are on and there are no people around and no ominous red door. Right before he returns to the now-lit backstage area, he seems to have a moment full of alot of emotion followed by dancing, which I always associated with some level of happiness. The darkness and shadowy people could represent his insecurities or the thoughts in the back of his head. Once he crushes the tiny Justin, only the good thoughts are left. I took it as him finding happiness through or because of the person he loves and is singing about. That's just my two cents, lol.
I love this song and the music video but now that you explain things I just wish that Justin would stop punishing him self it's taking a toll on him. His true fans like us still love him
Here’s the theory. Everything comes full circle. “Selfish” was given the same title as Britney’s and NSYNC’s song which he both has history and a past with. Justin dated Cameron Diaz that made a movie Being John Malkovich. In the movie, at the end, the character decides to keep the baby. Britney Spears reveals in her memoir that her and Justin decided to abort a child. She also says Justin gave her a framed letter that she still keeps to this day. Listen to the lyrics, it’s all a reflection on how all these events tie together to make this song about the baby her and Justin had to abort. “Your lips were made for mine.” Glad your mama made you”. “You must be an angel”. The title then reveals itself that the act of abortion was extremely SELFISH. And so, he made this song and framed it.
Also, in the room, the furniture is VERY modern like the furniture you see in his music video Cry Me a River. They are just smaller in size. Instead of him swiftly and graciously moving through the rooms like he does in Cry Me a River, you instead see someone fumbling and awkwardly moving through the office space. There are some movements that are slightly similar to both music videos but presented in a different form of expression. One swift, the other awkward. This is to show his regret during that time, whether it be with making the music video and hurting Britney or the selfish act of abortion, or probably both. He’s reaching the phone wanting to speak to his unborn child.
There’s too many intentional and calculated choices being made. Someone mentioned the dance sequence at the end is the singing in the rain dance. That song is known to invoke feelings of joy. But in the video, he’s “NOT singing in the rain”. AND he is wearing all black. He must be telling how he’s mourning and is overcome with feelings of loss and grief…. over his unborn child.
Justin released a video today saying a picture was based on movies, so this can be accurate, I was thinking more Willy Wonka going through a small door. The dancing in there reminded me of footloose or dirty dancing lol, not entirely sure. Definitely an inner struggle with everything around him
The dancing that was classic JT dancing was gene Kelly's singing in the rain. I think it also showed that he doesn't fit in the small world that he went in to. I have never seen that movie so this was interesting.
I think one is signifying his spiritual self … so that’s who he smashes ?! Which is how he gets taken over by the other Justin… which like I said In my other comment I think these doors are spiritual gates
Yeah but this is about him & Britney they communicate through music, if you look at the majority of lyrics in songs you can see it. I have heard rumors of them secretly seeing one another throughout the yrs. Even if that’s not true, they definitely have a soul connection. I understand he’s married & soul connection doesn’t always mean it has to be romantic but they have a twin flame relationship
The music video definitely feels part of an ongoing story for the theme of the album, but as a song and lead single, I found it mediocre, right down to the beat itself. Nice song but a real letdown for a single to enjoy in looking forward to a new album. *Edit: I know, people love to be wildly positive and supportive instead of completely honest at times but I choose to be completely honest.
Actually if you know JT and what's been going on you'd know this is a complete jab at Britt Spears Book. Where she expressed and showed it all holding back nothing. Look at the name of the album title and much more. And FYI that's a hospital not an office office's don't have a red phone.
LMAO you are completely obsessed with Justin! Every account of yours is more about Justin than Britney, lol get a life! From what I read everywhere and in the comments everyone is loving Justin's return except you haters.

Thank you for explaining this!! I was wondering!! Love JT and the song!!!
thank you!!!
I like this music video a lot! The dance at the end is really cool! Happy that Justin is making new music again.
thanks for your thoughts!!
the irony that Cameron Diaz was in the movie too and they were an item for like 3 years.
right! it's weird!
I was wondering about this. Nice 👍

I totally agree and think the same ❤

Ummm this movie has Cameron Diaz in it - that’s his ex girlfriend. Is that just a strange coincidence??
whoa! interesting find
that’s exactly what i thought immediately! very strange choice.. or a very calculated choice?

News flash, this brittney situation happened 20 years ago. Normal people move on from stuff they did when they were teens.
LOL no. The world doesn’t revolve around Britney.
😮: the world doesn’t revolve around Ms BS?
I agree that it’s for Britney, but you need to support it a little better lol.
Song is dated and damn he aged bad. He looks older than 42. He really stopped giving after “Mirrors”.
tbh i think he look ok for 42, this prove that he don´t have surgery to make him not age.
The style of music is coming back round.
I don’t know what 42 year olds you know but he looks good
Flop.
Lol. by a Spears fan i couldn't expect less
You have pink hair and gonna say this is a flop?!
Your life is a flop, get a life
Its number 1 on iTunes as we speak. Sorry Britney Avengers. 🤣
LMAO you are completely obsessed with Justin! Every account of yours is more about Justin than Britney, lol get a life! From what I read everywhere and in the comments everyone is loving Justin's return except you haters.
