How come the last example's molecule have DOU 3? is in 2 by molecule not by DOU formula but by the compound you interpreted at the end?
There is three DOU either way it is interpreted, by formula or from structure. DOU is the number of rings and pi bonds. This molecule has two pi bonds (the ketones) and the six membered carbon ring making three total degrees of unsaturation.
