    "2 Minutes to Midnight" is a reference to the "Doomsday Clock", a symbolic clock created in 1947 to alert about the imminence of a nuclear war and the danger it represents. "Midnight" represents the end of the world. At the time they wrote the song the clock was 2 minutes to midnight. Great song, great reaction. Nice to see you liked it, Brad.

    Honestly, Iron Maiden is perfect for Brad. They are so accessible to everyone, while being incredibly complex and clever.
    The surface level is easy listening for everyone, but there are always more layers underneath. It's part of their greatness, that they can do this while telling fantastic stories.

    • @alsantangelo

      Well I think actually, he needed more time, to fully appreciate everything that is going on within the layers.He's literally saying it here.half of maidens songs,, are just to nuanced, melodic and layered, for him not to get overwhelmed and then unfortunately get a wholly negative experience.
      He can appreciate bands like Metalllica more, at thiss early-stage of his introduction, because they are more in your face and have less varied melodies, incorporated by not just two different lead guitars, playing off each other, but also with the bass and the drumms literally having a life of their own for periods withinn songs.Like Lex said, a lot of their songs seem to have several songs within a song.
      When someone is intrroduced to maiden, they should start of with more basic straightforward songs like The trooper and aces high, and Then slowly moved through Powerslave and 11:58 like songs, towards the most prrogressive stuff later, With so much going on e.g. Back in the vvillage, Phantom of the Opera, hallowed be thy name, and basicallly anything off The Somewhere in Time album
      For example, someone had told him what too expect, before listening to the most progressive song, which is probably phantom of the opera, maybe he could have stayed present throughout all the transitions and layers, to be able to enjoy all of them

    One of their best. The entire power slave album is awesome. "Aces High" "Rime of the ancient mariner" also great. As far as lyrics, two minutes to midnight referring to the closeness of worldwide nuclear destruction. Right now I think we are at 30 seconds. Iron maiden is known for the 2 guitar harmonies. Bass and drums are great and Bruce Dickenson is a great vocalist. He's also an airline pilot in his off time. They even rented a 747 and flew a bunch of people from England to Spain I think for a concert. Very cool. Practice practice and inspiration makes for a great guitarist or any great musician.

    Practice, practice, practice, knowing where to go, every option available in the moment.
    It has levels, Jerry Garcia had a midi wired into his guitar and he was building complex pieces on the fly, using his pedals he could lay down his guitar, loop it, bring a tuba, layer it, he could be an orchestra.
    How far you wanna take it.
    Jerry is my guy but I SRV in Evansville IN, Mesker Park and it was my first non metal show, it had a huge impact.
    SRV opened an avenue to the Grateful Dead and 6/28/92 I went to Deer Creek and caught one of the gems of the 90s, killer first set, I was home.
    They practice, hard grinding touring bands...Grateful Dead were TOURING MONSTERS, grinding, TOUCH OF GREY on MTV blew them up, thermonuclear.
    The huge success hastened the end.
    Was blessed to see them 24 times from Southern Indiana holding down my full time job.
    Flex vacation came in 93.
    We did plant shutdowns, 2weeks Christmas 2 weeks in the summer.
    Flex vacation ruled!
    Watch live improvisation, the subtlenob, the note hit being the cue for the sax, itsa conversation without words, they watch each other.
    Phil Lesh had ingested way too much liquid LSD.
    as people sipped they added a splash of their own liquid L, one person poured 50K worth of crystal LSD into the apple juice. Phil had slug Unbeknownst to him all the acid added.
    Showtime, Phil Lesh, bassist extraordinaire of the Grateful Dead is fried, "I can't play"
    Mackey Hart brings his bass to him and lovingly explains he canplay the bass great and he's one of the best while strapping it on him.
    Phil goes out scared, high as fuck and discovers, not only could he play, he knew every possible combination he could play at warped mind speed.
    While he played he said a rainbow 🌈 appeared across the stage with a centipede that had different colored socks on each foot traversing the 🌈 as musical notes
    and galaxies, planets were whirling bye.
    Stopping had a few drinks lol.
    Love the show

It amazes me how far Steve Harris and the boys (Dave Murray is the only OTHER member from the early days) got from the Pub days. I was wondering about that, and you're probably right- With enough practice. But if you look online at professional musicians, and even tribute bands, playing maidens material constantly, they still struggle with the Bass and guitar work, especially in the songs on "SomeWhere in Time", where they make consistent mistakes."It can be quite frustrating to listen to

    • @TubetakerBHV
      @TubetakerBHV 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rowlph8888 Professionals should know how to play certain songs. If not they may not listen carefully or had the wrong notes.
      Coverbands mostly get the notes from internet sites and sometimes these are not correct.
      But the guitarists from Iron Maiden for example can play their solos again and again, note for note whenever they want to. Wake them up at 3o clock at night, drunk.. with a heavy head .. and they will play it.
      Because they played these songs a thousand times ... and maybe more often.
      Learning an instrument is like learning to type blind... you repeat certain patterns over and over again. For hours.. days... years.
      Yes it is as boring as it sounds but the fun part will come. ;-)

      Are we really at 100 seconds? That was always the problem with the clock, it was so subjective, and to get attention they had to always crank it up. I thought the chance of nuclear war was overblown during the Cold War, but it is still ridiculous to think that we are actually closer to doomsday today than we were during the Cold War. I get that Putin is unpredictable and has a blunder to make up for. But it still seems silly to think we are closer than we were in 1984.

    2 minutes" refers to an actual system the U.S. used to determine how close they were to nuclear war during the Cold War in 1947. With "Midnight" being the start of the nuclear holocaust.
    "The Golden Goose is on the loose and never out of season"
    The Golden goose is a term for capitalism/western countries that always seem to stick their nose into out peoples business..
    I could wrote about this song particularly for a whole day. Its very poetic in writtings (even though its dark), and very important on how world is ruled - even today.
    With words like patrioism, freedom, and OUR way of life beeing the center of wars.

    • @davidjames3080
      @davidjames3080 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The golden goose is about how war is a way to make money and people profit from it. This isn't just about the West (although there's no disputing the West indulge in it), it's about anyone who is killing people to make a profit or gain. As Russia is currently doing for example, so they can steal land to have land access to ports on the Black Sea.
      Let's also acknowledge that when we say 'the West' or the 'capitalist countries' or 'the East' or 'communist dictatorships' what we mean (or what should be meant) is that is the position of the rich and powerful leaders of those countries. The rest of us just want to lead our lives as best we can and I am sure that is the same all over the world. It's just that the rich and powerful can't fight their own fights without playing war games with the rest of us as puppets.

    Watch the Live after Death video of this song. It's improvised when they recorded it, but after that it's almost 100% muscle memory when they went on tour after this album came out in 1984. You can see them looking at their instruments, and also looking at the crowd at times.

    The guitar solo is normally build/constructed by phrases, licks and patterns in combinations. It's improvised when you begin playing 'em, but over time a soul takes form and bring forward the character.

    I really shouldn't have been drinking anything because that made me spit laugh my drink out. 😆
    At only one of the Maiden shows I attended did they play this. It was interesting because there's Maiden songs that get the crowd excited, songs that get them like "Ohh yeah!", but this was one that made everyone super happy. It was so much fun chanting out "2 Minutes to Midnight!" Which is funny considering the subject matter.

    Great band, Maiden just hits home for so many ppl. When it comes to constructing a guitar solo you'll be suprised by how often they will be just an improvisation. Or they will run through a number of different jam solo's , pick the best improvs for the underlying chord changes and use those to build the solo for the final recording. Offcourse there are some players who really pick their notes and write a solo but you'd have to be pretty deep into music theory.

    • @davidbanks736
      @davidbanks736 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly what I was gonna say. U just do it but some parts you may think about and structure in relation to the chord changes. Guitarists generally don't think but feel like Bruce Lee would say. Otherwise u will lose all that heavenly glory.🤣🤣🤣 love Enter the Dragon.lol.

    I can understand where Brad is coming from, not from the guitar solo standpoint but just getting used to hearing something different from what you normally hear. They have done one Dragonforce song and I had a hard time adapting to the speed, but the melodies were so great that I just eventually adapted to it and now fast extreme metal doesn't even phase me anymore. I will sometimes have someone listen to something like that not remembering how odd it was the first time I heard it and I have to catch myself because I love exposing people to new music. But yeah I get it.

    Lex, it's SO many hours, Hours, HOURS of practice and live performances to perfect the guitarist's skill. Some professionals still look at the fretboard for the entire solo, others don't have to, it's all individual. When I was in a local band as our rhythm guitarist, the practices for me were about not only learning the song as perfectly as possible, but being able to perform it while being able to look at the audience or other bandmembers, whip my (then) long hair around to the chunky metal parts, etc. But that was me; everyone's different. Brad, I really think you'll enjoy Iron Maiden overall, for the reasons you stated...they seemed to concentrate on melody, and 2-guitar interactions more intricately than some others.

  • @foogly84
    @foogly84 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Guitar solos are typically arpeggios and scales based in the key of the song. If you practice them a lot, and have good finger dexterity, you can eventually traverse them quickly.
    A lot of times these solos are practiced a lot, but they are a little improvised when played live. Usually mostly the same with a few different notes in the same scale or arpeggio they are playing at the time.
    If you are going to improvise, you need to have a good ear for what sounds good because you can't expect to just play two notes in the same scale and it will sound good with the song.

    2 minutes to midnight is a reference to the doomsday clock. This is a concept that shows how close we are to nuclear war, it was built in 1947. It was moved down to 100 seconds to midnight in 2021 because of climate issues and the Trump administration leaving nuclear treaties and climate agreements. Loved the reaction and the fact that you both enjoyed Iron Maiden so much.

      LOL, what a joke. Have these clock gatekeepers moved it to 1s yet? Under Trump we were bringing back troops and normalizing relations between the Arab world and Israel, not to mention North Korea.

      That 100 second thing was what lost it for me. Showed that the people running the clock cared nothing for truth. None of the treaties we pulled out of did anything to move the clock. Second A strong country makes war less likely. Now, weakness and brought out the evil in Russia and soon, China. Both will start expansionist moves. Russia is only starting with Ukraine and China is going to make a move on Taiwan. These things are dangerous. Everyone hates the US for being the world police. Tell me though. Do you want to live in a large city that has no police force? Now that we show weakness, the world is going to turn into Chicago.

    Hey, Brad & Lex. Normally, when laying down tracks for any record, the guitarist will compose a solo specifically for a song and then emulate that live because it's familiar to the listeners; however, any good guitarist who knows what key the band is playing in and who know their fretboard they can totally improvise on the spot and do often, whether that be when initially writing the song together or just jamming live.

    It's muscle memory but more importantly your hands begin to work as one when you get better and better so you really don't look at them separate, they become one. Btw, a lot of solos are improvised. Sometimes the inspiration hits at any time and to catch it on tape is magic.

  • @ChrisPandHisFlyingV
    @ChrisPandHisFlyingV 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a guitar player myself who writes original music I can assure you that most guitar solos in metal songs are crafted musical pieces within the song. In fact Adrian Smith, one of Iron Maiden's guitar players, said once in an interview that he considered guitar solos to be compositions unto themselves withing a song. Some guitar players record improvised solos but then live usually play that same in-studio improvised solo they recorded. But usually a good guitar solo is thought out in order to harmoniously complement the music passage(s) being soloed over.

    Basically the solo is a set piece, but just through feel of the song that night, how the guitarist is feeling that night, he will usually change it up a little bit in order to not get bored with the solo because he might be playing it 150 times this year on the tour. So the outline of the solo is basically the same but rarely are they played exactly the same night after night

    Some guitarist`s freestyle, its called improvised in guitarist and musician terms. In terms of metal sounds the music is constantly evolving, when I was getting into it in the late 70`s early 80`s there was no screamo/growl style as some call it. The guitar sound changed as guitar amps evolved too, the sound became heavier and sometimes the guitars were downtuned to provide a deeper bassier sound.

    You're both pretty much right about guitar solos. The process of composing them is often a lot of improvisation but the ultimate goal is a melodical & emotional solo. Some bands will improvise something live based around the original solo, like Led Zeppelin. Some bands remain true to the original solo, like Metallica generally do.

    Years and years of practising and playing gives the fingers. :) The amount of the stories how the now famous guitarists picked the first guitar after hearing someone playing it, is countless. And they cause, hopefully, people picking up a guitar..... The solos seldom are freestyle. They do come up with the idea, but then practice it to form. Live the situation might be different, but usually they do keep the essential elements there not to distract and confuse the audience.

    This is heavy-metal at its finest. This is nothing less than heavy metal whatsoever like you guys said. It’s not thrash. This is your quintessential heavy-metal sound. Iron maiden is absolutely the bomb when it comes to heavy metal period. They have a lot of harder songs but primarily they fit right into the heavy-metal groove of the 80s. You definitely need to check out their first and second album. And it’s a whole lot different than when Bruce Dickinson took over the vocals on the Number Of The Beast album in 1983. It was a total different sound. But it was heavy metal. It’s hard to explain you just have to listen to it and some of the tracks of their first to iron maiden albums. But you guys did good on the reaction

    As a bass player, I never played with a pick. So my right hand was always fluid with the strings. If any attention was paid, it was to my left hand, playing the notes. I assume its similar with guitar. But, once youve played a song, a thousand times, it is natural.
