Dead-weight Testers, also known as Pressure Balances, are named so because they utilize dead weights in the determination of pressures operating in a closed and compressed system. For each value of the pressure applied, a predetermined mass (weight) is used to exert the force on a fixed area (of the piston) to counterbalance the buoyancy force.
