Very interesting. I can't understand for it to be so cold there how do they have sooo many insects? Also during the war whoever brought all the barrels and vehicles and etc. (Whitch was probably my on country born and raised I'm 60 yrs. Old in U S A ) why in the world didn't they have the decency to haul and take their trash back with them?

Hi Katie - thanks for the feedback - always appreciated! The mosquitos are a bit of a mystery - there is a lot of stagnant water at the airbase and I have seen them elsewhere in Greenland where there is boggy ground. Fortunately these cold-weather mozzies are not the biting kind! But they do get everywhere (and I mean Everywhere!). The barrels were used to store Arctic Diesel by the US Air Force, who left a lot of old metalwork at numerous sites in Greenland when they vacated them. They are now being cleared up, and this is being paid for by Denmark but using Greenlandic labour. I guess eco-attitudes were very different back then. Perhaps they thought with such a small population in a sparsely occupied territory no-one would complain.

@@TheURLofEaling wow you are so informative. Thank you so much. I had no idea. You are externally knowledgeable. I'm sure your right in 1945 when WW II ended they didn't think like we do now. Never too old to learn something new. Thanks again...

I was there in 1970. Cannot understand why there are now so many big cars. No roads beyond the small town. Sad that the car has become such a status symbol.

Same as anywhere I guess - we have good public transport in London, yet a car is still useful around town. The cars you see anywhere are an indicator of what people can afford.

Comment by email from TS in USA - I think you saved the best for last, well done, thoroughly enjoyed it! Fantastic trip, well documented in your video presentation. On a related point, I think Donald Trump should be asked to clean up the mess left post World War 2!

Thanks - apparently earlier this year funding for the great tidy-up was agreed. Not sure where it’s coming from, but now there are objections that it should not be cleared entirely - some should be retained as a “monument”. Then some counter-complained that people will be frustrated to visit and be told that there used to be very much more of it! I’m just glad I saw it while it was there, because it’s such a rare site. In my captions I was keen to avoid presenting it as “simply an eco-disaster site” - I wanted to touch on both the positives and negatives of such a unique and hard-to-get-to place.
