The takeaway was twofold and yes, vanilla is absolutely essential to the flavor of a baked product. In terms of providing the "aromatic lift" to baked products, then no, real vanilla beans are not essential and imitation vanilla provides the same background flavors. A $10-12 bottle of vanilla extract (not imitation) is what Ethan prefers for other products where the vanilla is front and center, like frostings and custards. Interesting!

I just made this exactly to the recipe. It did not look like yours! So I rewatched your video. When I put mine into the dish it was thick and heavy, not runny like yours! And I had difficulty spreading it. I haven’t tasted it yet but it sure doesn’t look like yours.

I think that he would greatly disagree with you on that as he makes his own and has a very easy recipe to make vanilla extract
I make my own and there’s no comparison between how much better it is and tastes❤
