Thanks Lee for reacting to this one. This has always been one of my favorite Starship tracks. Btw Craig's last name is pronounced "Cha-kee-so". Fabulous guitarist
As the '60's ended Casady and Kaukonen from J Airplane moved on to form Hot Tuna. J Starship of the 1970's was my favorite version of them. Once the '80's came with Mickey Thomas I moved on.
I forgot how good this track was. the mid-70's was my favorite verion of this local Bay Area band. After this they became more of a stadium band with huge, very well known songs of various quality IMO. But they were popular with the masses. Another Bay Area band, Journey, went through a similar metamorphosis. More of a Prog band early on (Look Into The Future) to a stage band with incredibaly popular songs that sold by the boat-load.
I recall picking up Rolling Stone in the 70s as was my habit and a cover story featuring young pup/hotshot guitarist Craig Chaquico talking about "playing guitar between Grace Slick's legs." Chacuiqo, take a shower...cold.😂🥵🎸🎶
Check out Ride The Tiger, Runaway and Light The Sky On Fire. And if you do, please do the longer versions when there is one. Also, try some Grace Slick led songs like Fast Buck Freddie, Play On Love, Hyperdrive and Black Widow. Also, there's a fantastic duet with Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick called Stranger.
I bought the first two or three JS albums. But by the time this came out I had moved on. You should check out some of the solo stuff. Hot Tuna is great and Bodacious, Marty’s band, had a couple of good songs (which I can’t remember offhand) that prompted me to track down the album.
I think all Jefferson Starship records until Freedom at point zero (one of their best) are great - after that they don´t get disco, they get 80s stadium rock -soon they drop the Jefferson and it went simple and mainstream
They went thru so many changes over the years, They ended up probably having their biggest hit "We Built This City" under the name Starship. While the biggest song, most of us old timers thought it sucked tbh. Even Grace said she hated it. Blows Against the Empire is the first time that Jefferson Starship was used as a band name. The Airplane was still active at the point so it was a side project for Grace and Paul. It is my favorite non Airplane project, it's about hippies hijacking a Starship man. How could it not be great, haha! Catch you live again when I can! Peace
@@L33Reacts Yeah, they were putting out really good stuff into the early 80's! Then by the mid/late80's they became very pop music oriented and totally lost their edge (i.e. the "We Built This City" disaster)!!
Try "Sketches Of China"... ..."Let me tell you about a man I know He rode the depth and breadth of China On a horse that he grew himself From the bark of a tree on mainland China"...
Airplane was a much heavier band than Starship was. They also had a much more political bent than Starship. The '71 thru '78 version of Starship was their best. In '78, Balin and Slick left the band (actually, Grace Slick was fired from the band after a show in Germany where she was so drunk that she cussed out the audience over WWII) and Mickey Thomas took over lead vocals. Their first album with him on lead, called Freedom at Point Zero, was really terrific. But it really fell off quickly afterward into the netherworld of arena rock. Grace came back to lend some highlights but they really weren't very interesting overall. When Paul left, he took the name Jefferson with him so Starship was left and they were really bad.
Their best as Jefferson Starship. Maybe that guitar playing got some people to that climax!😃Some people like Marty left, and done other band changes as they changed to the name Starship and not Jefferson Starship just a few years later and became more showy rock or just plain bad music!
I like the Spitfire album. It never got as much attention as I thought it deserved. “Dance With the Dragon” and “Song to the Sun” are two more from the album that are my favorites.
Jefferson Starship never changed their musical style. By the time "We Built this city.....came out, it was pretty much a band who used the name Starship. Even though a few of the members of the former band were in it, the majority soon became dissatisfied with this type of music and the direction it was going and dropped out. There were those who refused to go along with it in the first place and continued to release the music we were used to, along with solo projects while recruiting different players. Yes, JS has gone through changes in personnel but always remained true to their music.
Please do not call Jefferson Starship "Starship". There is a long story behind it all. Jefferson Airplane eventually splintered into Jefferson Starship (Paul, Grace and Marty) and Hot Tune (Jorma and Jack). Marty left Jefferson Starship and Grace went into rehab. Paul carried on by adding Micky Thomas with the Freedom at Point Zero LP. Grace came back but the band turned into a Micky Hit Machine. Paul eventually quit the band and being the only remaining founding member of Jefferson Airplane, he sued the band to retain the use of "Jefferson", and he won. That's when Starship came about. Grace left a while after that. Many of us who had started with Jefferson Airplane hold Starship with distain. Jefferson Starship did put out a lot of good songs, but the Paul and Grace songs tend to be my favorites.
They were and are incredible, didn't want to come back!
Craig learned to play guitar with one finger while he was recovering from a serious car accident. By 16 he was a virtuoso
Craig Chiquico was a guitarist that exceeded most others

Airplane at Monterey. High Flying Bird is a highlight from that concert. Check that puppy out some day.

I love this album... very unique! I saw Starship before they jumped the Shark. They were great!
"Naming IS knowing!" You know a thing in the process of naming it! Do you know anything that has no name? 😎

This is one of my favorite songs from the Starship
I see why kenin. This was fantastic!!
Nice track, excellent guitar and vocals.
Absolutely! I loved the guitar
Craig was on fire
One of my favorite songs by Starship.
Such a great band ❤
They really are awesome! I’ve loved every song so far from airplane and starship

Starship put out such good music .. love this
Just top 40 garbage rock
You should listen to their album "Dragonfly". I think it's one of their best!
Just listen to “We Built This City” to understand what happened to JS.

Songs featuring “Pappa John Creach!” Good call 😊

I dig this version, but the Mickey Thomas version of Starship was my favorite.
This song just feels so good.
Hey Lee it’s pronounced “Cha-key-so. He rips on “Ride the Tiger” he was 20 or 21 when it was recorded.

Cause They sold out for Top 40 garbage rock
This song definitely has that 70's California sound...love it! Spitfire and Red Octopus are both great albums!!
So far they’ve been amazing! I can’t wait to hear “Awakening” next week
Top 40 garbage crap

Def b4 autotune
Of the Four Element albums ("Red Octopus"- Water, "Spitfire"-Fire, "Dragonfly"-Air, and "Earth"-Earth), this is the 2nd best album.

We Built This City is #1 on my personal list of worst songs ever recorded. #2 I'm Your Captain, #3 YMCA.
Top 40 sellout for money
