George Clinton told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if his mother had died
Should be mentioned that Clinton and Hazel were tripping their balls off too.
While on Acid ❤
This song was played at midnight every nite on the popular FM rock station here locally in the 70’s
THE stoner song of its generation
Maggot Brain and Watermelon in Easter Hay Zappa) are the two most emotional guitar solos ever recorded. RIP Eddie Hazel and FZ
This epic was like an anthem for us in our early 70s get HIGH SCHOOL daze. 😊 Seeing them Live & Wild at 15 on stage in 71 blew my mind! Probably the most audacious and outlandish performance I had ever seen up to that point🎉 Funkadelic were like our Black Psychedelic Rock heroes because there were very few other groups like them after Hendrix & Sly Stone.
Late night track on FM Radio. Radio was so important to us for tuning on to great music. Breaks my heart kids don’t have it anymore it’s how we found our tribes . Nothing was more important than if you were cool with great music, introducing others to it ,it was everything. . Musing of a old lady
Eddie Hazel at the start of 1970 was considered one of the best lead players out there and competition for Jimi Hendrix, he's kind of an unknown gem for most people.
WOW - can't WAIT to see what you thought about THIS ONE!!! GREAT BAND - GREAT TUNE!!! HUGS!
Yes, live it's a different dimension. Standing there feeling the music, mouth open. Lucky enough to see them live a few times, most of the time ass shaking sweaty fun!
You just can't beat 1971 when it comes to music....
I've heard a lot of guitar solos but ... DAMN
Nice Maryland hat! The land of my birth. Going to see P-Funk for the fifth time in about two weeks, can't wait. I expect a full on "Maggotbrain", although Mr. Eddie Hazel will not be performing, sadly he has passed. But I keep going back for more because Mr. George Clinton and friends put on an amazing show every time. First saw P-Funk in the 90's, late to the game, but I did see the "Mothership Reunion Show" in 1996 in Central Park NYC, with Mr. William "Bootsy" Collins, and about 25 or more friends on stage at one time. Insane.
Free you mind and your ass will follow. This never gets old. It was indeed a trip seeing this live. They got partying, too. Everyone dancing. This song has some Floyd in it too.
Seen em twice. Last time my Rosa danced on stage
Yeah, usually starting to mello our trips about 3 or 4 am. Time to play Maggot Brain!
As you watched Stop Making Sense, the hired gun keyboard player is Bernie Worell. He was the keyboard player for Funkadelic. The instrumental Ween song Tear of Eddie is a tribute to Mr. Hazel.
R.I.P The Wizard of Woo 😔🕊️
Eddie eas given two instructions. "Play like your motger just died." "Now, play like she just came back to life."
Welcome to the psychedelic side of funk! Eddie Hazel takes us on a journey through the universe - the once-in-a-lifetime trip!
Maggot Brain was recorded in one take when George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Hazel during the recording session to play as if he had been told his mother was dead: Clinton explained, "I told him to play like his mother had died, to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him."
Man. All these years. How did I miss this???? If not for your channel bro…. I literally did what you wanted to do. Closed my eyes and let it work its magic. Wow…. And I too was worn out from chasing my 4 year old granddaughter around at the beach today. That felt so damned good.
Trippin man!
Now trip out on the Chambers Brothers, "Time" Long version.
Traversing time and space through song!
Afrofuturism
This song was in a way, Eddie’s eulogy for Jimmi Hendrix.
Don't stop here. Keep going right through the entire album. Pure brilliance from start to finish.
You got the Zappa connection quickly! They often performed I Am the Slime live
This might be the one time I’d recommend speakers over headphones, I’ve heard this song many times, probably the my1st time ever with earbuds. 😊
Living in the country even the animals wouldn't make a sound
Saw them around this time at a high school gym or something in Plainfield, NJ. Just thought we were going to see a good local band nearby. Turned out to be totally outrageous future Hall of Famers. Who knew?
This is one of the most incredible masterpieces of guitar ever. The whole band was playing but George Clinton faded them out to focus just on the solo. If you haven't already, look up how this song came about and what inspired Eddie Hazel to play something this deep. There's also some live versions on disc and videos with the full band of Parliament Funkadelic from around 1976 77 but with Mike " Kidd Funkadelic" playing the solo. Also amazing but the original is the legend. RIP beautiful brother Eddie Hazel.
There is a better version in my opinion.

@@marcjacobscontinued9411 That is one of the versions I was talking about. It came as a bonus 45 inside that LP. The video of Houston 1978 is also a beast th-cam.com/video/rBNJ52YSKww/w-d-xo.html
@@marcjacobscontinued9411 That is one of the versions I was talking about. It was on a bonus 45rpm in the One Nation.LP..but there's a full video clip of P Funk from Houston 1978 with Mike Kidd Funkadelic Hampton handling the solo as he did on the One Nation 45. All 3 are truly amazing.
@@carrerlluna66 They are indeed.
Thanks for your response. 🙂
When they reissued the album on CD, they added an alternate mix of this song, which is pretty much the straight-up original band take without all the studio effects and resequencing George Clinton added to the original version. I like the simple mix as much if not more than the heavy effects version.
I hear influences going in and out of this. Hendrix for sure. Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, and yes, Zappa. 😊❤
Eddie Hazel Opus!
Oh snap! You're goin full on into it now. George Clinton -Funkadelic/Parliament are the Frank Zappa of black culture in the same time period. IMHO 🎶🎶🎵🎶✌️
Funkadelic fans around the world have gathered after funerals of your best bud and played this eulogy at grave sites for 50 years.
1971- Eddie Hazel Magic
Funkadelic/Parliament. The P-Funk. The Mothership has landed. One of my favorite bands of all time. Their shows were fantastic. Very fun!!🎉❤
Psychedelic Funk that rips your brain out through your ears. So good.
And no, lol, that wasnt Frank. That was the commander of the Mothership, George Clinton
I remember back in the early 80s when I was 20 and first married, my husband who was a music freak, had this album. I thought the band was Nectar! Appreciate you doing this and correcting my error. I couldn't wrap my young mind around this and it drove me out of the house! Maybe you would like to check out Nectar too 😊
I love this piece. Amazing.
Check out Ween
Tear of Eddie an amazing tribute to Eddie Hazel
Thank you!
Love George Clinton, saw them live in Santa Cruz, CA. Over 20 band members on stage at one time! And the costumes, well, you should just pull up any live show.
IWT
Gillian Anderson of the Crown and X Files this is her favourite song of all time. Is she patron X ? 😂😂😂
Think, think, it ain't illegal yet
Funkadelic and Parliament are Funk Babys.
Greatest guitar solo ever!!! Sorry Eruption but Eddie Hazel was a GOD
Was gonna submit this! Thx X!!
Can’t wait for this one!
You will be blown away by the pure otherworldly funk and guitar of this track
I definitely was. Felt like a call from another dimension.
From what I know about Eddie, he was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan, among other influences but was adding more Funk and with his own unique approach. I'm pretty sure he was going wild using an Electro Harmonix Memory Man analog delay, which was new at the time, to create those crazy feedback washes.
With MEMORIAL DAY coming soon. A very appropriate dedication to Vietnam Veterans is "MARCH TO THE WITCHES CASTLE". This was a WAR PROTEST SONG in 1974 that was banned from the airwaves by CONGRESS. 30 YEARS later the DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PURCHASED THE RIGHTS to this classic, added actual war footage in a dedication video that is played in a loop at the VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL WALL in WASHINGTON D.C. 24/7. Please use the D.O.D. version for your reaction mind you it is very graffic and disturbing. It is Bernie Worrell ( keyboards) and EDDIE HAZEL/GARY SHIDER on guitar. A cover of "THE BATTLE HYMN of The Republic/ When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again"
Eddies that shred. Would those be Shredding Eddies or Eddie Shredders? But to answer your question "What the fuck am I listening to?". I think you are hearing a live recording of a guitar track played by a guitarist, in the moment, under the influence of LSD. Some tracks were added later. That's just my opinion.
Yep, you learn early on to wear the kids out.
This played at midnite on Saturdays back in the day.
This one was an American band
I don't know what to say ..... Amazing
You might want to listen to Eddie Hazel's "I WANT YOU" " SUPER STUPID" "RED HOT MAMA" "MISS LUCIFER'S LOVE" "FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW" "I WANNA KNOW" '
Eddie Hazel was only 20 years old when he recorded that, eh. Now listen to Super Stupid.
Brain Ticket
Eddy Cochran?
How about Phil Ehart of Kansas????
Fast Eddie Clark from Motorhead is the other Shreddin' Eddie.
There weren't many quality black rock bands in rock music history. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Funkadelic/Parliament, Living Color, The Chambers Brothers and War. Probably, some others that I have forgotten. Maybe some Lenny Kravitz or Prince.
Funny how different we all perceive things..... this did nothing for me at all..... just a lot of blues-based licks at harsh volumes.... to me it sounded like a poor man's Watermelon in Easter Hay..... just my opinion though glad you enjoyed it that much....... and dude!....... a morning at the mall with your kids is golden brother!.... that's the sweetest privilege ever I hope you enjoy that shit!!!
Different strokes My friend. Glad you gave it a shot! Thank you for watching :)
@@L33Reacts aw man...ALWAYS give music a shot...as you know,...the rewards can be immeasurable....
Honest comment. That's the reason that there have never been a colored person playing rock and roll music or country music
There is a better version in my opinion.
