Lol, i was gonna hold off too, then I thought of Nintendo being Nintendo and killing this thing somehow so I ordered before Nintendo do what they love to do.
Sometimes, the simplest is all you need. I'm surprised how much I play the lower end systems, especially Gameboy. I'm by all means not a "old games are better" crowd. I'm very open minded on that. However, for the longest time I've not grasped why they pull me in so much. Now I think it's because the Gameboy games were designed for short bursts. Whether due to potential battery life woes, small screen fatigue, very basic button combinations, and very simple gameplay for simple hardware. Gameboy games could be played and put down within minutes. No huge time commitments (Pokémon aside). Minimal to no story exposition. And no complex battle systems to remember.
@ yes got it on December 27. It's awesome, it can even play a decent selection of Dreamcast games. I would have prefered to have a regular button layout, it would have worked well with GBA and the actual layout really suck with more "modern" systems. Stick with 16-bit and under.
I want to do this when this device gets on sale. I loved screwing around with GBA emulation back in the day. The romhacking scene is immense if you like pokemon. The fact that it can be played quietly is awesome too.
love the shirt. love the format. new handheld and Russ's settings. for someone who is in a position to buy a new system they can just follow along and have a great setup. wonderful
I love your settings videos. Learned a lot about overlays and shaders from earlier videos and this one showing off how some simple theme settings changes the whole feel of the device is more great stuff. Thanks for making these. I've got enough of the XX devices to start doing a few systems per device like you did here. Then I can just pick up a specific device that is set up to make the most of whatever system of games I want to play at the moment. I love this.
Exactly the same situation here. But there is something magical about buying Rom Hack cartridges (like Pokemon Quetzal) to play on original hardware lol
@BenjiiiB1 yeah man I ordered a few minutes after Russ's video. There are some upsides to being up in the middle of the night nursing a broken bone in my leg!
The best competitor to getting a modded GBA. Less than half the Price, bigger Screen, millions of additional playable titles. No Boktai, Warioware Twisted though.
I'm personally hoping minUI will be ready for it, once I get my RG-34XX. I need my "start directly to the autosave state of last game played" function. And I love the minimal UI.
I just got a 40xxv and although I messed around on a PSP with custom firmware ( until I attempted a shell swap. Don't do it! )I have been hesitant with this but reading your guide I am comfortable enough to tinker. Thanks so much!
Always for the custom OS', and it's really awesome that Knulli was able to update so quickly to let people start tinkering with this OS on their 34XX's. Personally went with the CubeXX and looking forward to getting muOS setup on it, but always prefer a customized experience with my curated game collection (don't need few thousand games I won't ever play, just the few few hundred I'm more likely to play).
Geez, I just watched the review yesterday and I already forgot how much it looked like a GBA. I kinda wish they had the X and Y buttons labeled, but the way they are now, they blend in and it really does just look like a plain GBA at first glance
Such a nice system! I’m playing a lot of advance now on my powkiddy v10 and it’s so goood! But this looks even better haha. Probably going to buy this one around February, to not annoy my wife 😮💨😜😂
Ordered and arrived before Christmas! Definitely gonna replace the stock OS. I must say this form factor, to me at least, really feels a lot better on the hands.
I think this will be better with MinUI, because we can personalize the boot logo and make it a full modern GBA. I wasn't excited for this one, but maybe when the price drops and MinUI comes to this device.
Thanks Russ I've avoided the H700 devices for now but I think there will always be a place for novelty handhelds. Even with the non H700 devices, the Bubble looking like a mini Gear, the GPi Case matching a mini Gameboy and the various other products along with the RG34XX which match the GBA and GBA micro look are evergreen from that nostalgia design perspective. Though wonder if Anbernic has an alternative coming with a thumbstick similar to G4A CM4 for more practical usage for N64. Though guess they'd still be missing the equivalent of two yellow face buttons.
I’d imagine that if you did do the whole “only gba” games thing you could probably make the X/Y and L2/R2 be mapped to stuff like saving and loading along with fast forward, rewind, etc.
On my RG353M for GBC and GBA lately I've often been remapping Y and X to Select and Start, then I unmap the actual Select button. I just do it with a per-game remap file so far. This gives me two benefits: 1) Easier to reach select/start, and for Gen III Pokémon games it basically gives them the DS game controls, 2) I can hit shortcuts like screenshot and stuff that use the Select button without it passing Select through to the game (by using the actual Select button that I unbound from the emulator), which often will do something undesirable when I just want a screenshot (like advancing text in Pokémon games or releasing your power in Kirby).
Thanks, I am waiting for my green one to arrive, I will do this. Mine is going to set up for GBA only. I am going to play through Metriod Zero again on my green one, I think the green will look good with that game.
Hoping those Pokemon logos don't come back to haunt you 😬 other than that, this setup looks amazing and if I get around to owning one this is 100% how I'll be setting it up!
I olayed the demo of Goodboy Galaxy and it looks fun. I know it's now out on steam but I haven't bought it yet. I have too many games in my backlog so I'm trying not to purchase any games even ones that look really cool. I'm like 99% purchasing games if they're nostalgic and that's about it.
Did something go wrong with the video-editing? A Russ video thats just 7 mins - there must be something wrong 😂 Grab a snack and drink and without any further delay, the video is over 😄
I think of it like someone telling you where you can put your coat and that you can sit anywhere when you walk into their house, which, IMO, you are free to ignore if you'd like.
Yeah it’d just be basic text for any game that doesn’t scrape properly. But KNULLI scrapes from the games db and screen scraper so there’s a pretty good chance that each game is covered, even my Pokémon rom hacks worked out fine.
That's a very nice setup, might give knulli another go, just didn't like you had to transfer all via wifi since it formats SD card to unreadable format in windows.
It would be quite a challenge to play snes games on this one especially super punch out but could be adjusted just easily to your preference. And yes this is a perfect gameboy even a nes/famicom console.
Please can someone help me ? I’m trying to play my gba games on my anbernic cube xx and using knulli . The games is slow and almost unplayable and the audio is stuttering. Please what can I do to make them work better ?
Hey Russ, I got my RG34XX a couple days ago excited to do this installment, but it didn't work for me. I think I either downloaded the wrong image file or my sd card was corrupted. I flashed the "RG35XXSP" version of knulli thinking it would work on any xx device and I got a static TV like screen. Is there a version of knulli specifically for the RG34XX or did I just mess up somehow?
Hi, yes there is a specific RG34XX build, it can only be downloaded from their discord after giving them a Ko-Fi donation since it's in a pre-release state. Otherwise you can wait a bit for the public release, although I'm not sure how long that will be.
Any device with WiFi + Knulli support will support them with Knull installed at least. So if you copied his setup here they should work. The Knulli website has a section about it.
ughhhh..... I wish this thing came out like a year ago before I purchased an RG35XXH . I purchased an SP back in the day and skipped the OG Advance which I loved the form factor, but not a lack of backlighting.
Love it! I'm holding off on this one for now because I already bought 5 devices and my wife is giving me "the look".
Lol, i was gonna hold off too, then I thought of Nintendo being Nintendo and killing this thing somehow so I ordered before Nintendo do what they love to do.
I'm in the same boat
Same I think my gf is gonna left me if she sees another handheld in the mail 😂
@jjss3055 glad I'm not the only one. Thought I was just being paranoid. (Maybe I am. Maybe YOU are. Maybe WE are.) 😆
@@jjss3055 Anbernic is a Chinese company. Nintendo can't touch them. China has zero copyright protection laws for stuff from outside of China.
Very cool shirt russ 👍
Yeah that shirt 👚 hard ☝🏾
It reminds me of gta vice city
I was dressed up for the RH livestream since we were having a ranking/awards ceremony! th-cam.com/users/liveFw558jDp9fQ
Reyn Spooner makes the best shirts. Good choice bro.
Oh no. Your clean setup videos always talk me into buying the device.
"Russ with a Hawaiian shirt isnt real, he only wears cool band tees"
Russ: 0:00
Exactly what I'll be doing! Only need GBA, little bit of GB/GBC with a sprinkle of SNES
Sometimes, the simplest is all you need. I'm surprised how much I play the lower end systems, especially Gameboy. I'm by all means not a "old games are better" crowd. I'm very open minded on that. However, for the longest time I've not grasped why they pull me in so much.

THIS
Playing GB/GBC on this is just as nostalgic as playing GBA for me, because I played a lot of GB/GBC games on my original GBA.
Thanks Russ! I just ordered mine, my first anbernic device I’m pretty excited! This helps a lot.
When I was a kid I had the gba and never in my life did I think we would have an identical handheld but have every game. Man times have changed
Ordered one yesterday. First time I order an emulation handheld since the RetroidPocket 2. I loved the GBA so much, can't wait to received it.
You get it yet? I just ordered mine today and hoping it’s 2 weeks 🙏
@ yes got it on December 27. It's awesome, it can even play a decent selection of Dreamcast games. I would have prefered to have a regular button layout, it would have worked well with GBA and the actual layout really suck with more "modern" systems. Stick with 16-bit and under.
Very slick setup! I love your theme customization videos, they're great for brainstorming what you can really do with these devices.
Got one for Christmas and it arrived yesterday. Got it set up this morning. So far it seems pretty perfect for GBA.
I want to do this when this device gets on sale. I loved screwing around with GBA emulation back in the day. The romhacking scene is immense if you like pokemon. The fact that it can be played quietly is awesome too.
I love this video format! It gives us some ideas on how to customize our devices!
Transition at the end was spectacular btw
I so wanted the RG35XX SP, but this one came out so now I want it!
Loving the shirt. Very festive
Those looking for a full GBA experience will love this. Excellent video, as always.
And that shirt is seriously awesome.
Man, your camera and lighting setup is so on point!
Definitely a GBA-only setup for me on this device.
love the shirt. love the format. new handheld and Russ's settings. for someone who is in a position to buy a new system they can just follow along and have a great setup. wonderful

A 7 min video from Russ? Blasphemy!
The snack and drink recommendation appeared absurd
Just ordered one for my 4 year old definitely goona set it up for him like this 👍🏼
I have original GBA, SP, and micro hardware along with a EZFlash, but I still kind of want one of these...
I always found flash cards to be jank, I'm weirdly excited about this.
Do it!!
Worth it for fast forward and save states
Knulli is just so great !
I was considering buying a custom GBA.
But seeing this device, i'm reconsidering it !

Dude, I'm loving the shirt!
Was going to buy the TrimUI Brick but it was too similar to my 35XX. Definitely grabbing this, the nostalgia is too strong.
This is pretty much how I’m planning to set mine up as well, but with only really my favorites in the non-GBA systems. 👍👍
This is pretty much in line with what I was thinking I’d do for this device.
I’m waiting for a while before buying one though.
Got mine today (boxing day, Dec 26). Gonna be spending the next while setting it up and playing with it 😁
I have no intention of buying this device, or ever setting it up. I'm just here to listen to Russ' voice ❤
Nice vid. Mine has apparently shipped so hopefully it will come before Christmas.. fingers crossed.
this looks so good i cant wait for mine to come in
Really appreciate this, thanks a ton!
There’s something very likable about you, idk what it is but nice job
Soooo tempted to buy this. I need a main driver, solely for GB, GBC, GBA and Game Gear.
7 Minute Video?
Grab a snack and drink?
ABSOLUTELY SLAMS MORNING COFFEE ☕
Geez, I just watched the review yesterday and I already forgot how much it looked like a GBA. I kinda wish they had the X and Y buttons labeled, but the way they are now, they blend in and it really does just look like a plain GBA at first glance

The custom firmware people elevate these devices a lot! Anbernic is lucky they do it for free.
Love the shirt.
Next gen Magnum P.I.
Ordered and arrived before Christmas! Definitely gonna replace the stock OS. I must say this form factor, to me at least, really feels a lot better on the hands.
Great vid, Russ! Dig the shirt!
Nice after review vid Russ.. definitely a contender for those Nintendo reteo systems😂
my next retro console for sure, the design was aaarrrggggg
Next I need either a bezel frame or some sort sticker mod to replicate the original bezel logo as it feels wrong without it!
7 minutes? I barely finished my snack!
edit: love the video of course
I think this will be better with MinUI, because we can personalize the boot logo and make it a full modern GBA. I wasn't excited for this one, but maybe when the price drops and MinUI comes to this device.
Man am I TORN. I was eager to pull the trigger on this bad boy until I heard about the D-pad. I also LOVE the colour, wish the Cube had it...
Looking clean in that shirt Russ.
Knulli and Batocera are so good. Can't wait till there's a stable build of one of them for my Retroid Pocket 5.
I’d imagine that if you did do the whole “only gba” games thing you could probably make the X/Y and L2/R2 be mapped to stuff like saving and loading along with fast forward, rewind, etc.

U r legend sir. Love these video's .wish you merry christmas and milion views on TH-cam on 2025
Thanks, I am waiting for my green one to arrive, I will do this. Mine is going to set up for GBA only.
I am going to play through Metriod Zero again on my green one, I think the green will look good with that game.
Don't Miss Out on AM2R (Ports) aswell. That game is excellent. Playing it on my R36S right now.
Hoping those Pokemon logos don't come back to haunt you 😬 other than that, this setup looks amazing and if I get around to owning one this is 100% how I'll be setting it up!
Keep up the good content bro, what is your top 10 handhelds in order ?
New month, new anbernic device. Absolutely horrendous but cool video as always
Probably I'll set my RG34XX on that way when it comes. I bought it yesterday
Russ, as a massive GBA enthusiast I advice you to also put Castlevania Circle of the Moon aswell as the three Fire Emblem games on it.
you are the best, Thank YOU, it is what i need❤
Finally my mans live in Hawaii and wearing the appropriate attire
I gained 10 pounds watching Russ’ videos because I grab my favourite snacks and drinks everytime.
Right...i am actually getting annoyed. Where. Is. This. Knulli, for the RG34XX? I dont see it anywhere....
I olayed the demo of Goodboy Galaxy and it looks fun. I know it's now out on steam but I haven't bought it yet. I have too many games in my backlog so I'm trying not to purchase any games even ones that look really cool.
I'm like 99% purchasing games if they're nostalgic and that's about it.
as another comment mention on another video, the dpad is a bit close to the screen.
Did something go wrong with the video-editing? A Russ video thats just 7 mins - there must be something wrong 😂 Grab a snack and drink and without any further delay, the video is over 😄
Thank you for another useful video
This man is always telling me to grab a snack and a drink. DON'T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE.
I think of it like someone telling you where you can put your coat and that you can sit anywhere when you walk into their house, which, IMO, you are free to ignore if you'd like.
Definitely makes sense for that device.
Love the shirt Russ!
Man ambernic "spelling " knows what I like nostalgia!
What do the game icons look like for ROM hacks / unidentified games? Is it just basic text?
Yeah it’d just be basic text for any game that doesn’t scrape properly. But KNULLI scrapes from the games db and screen scraper so there’s a pretty good chance that each game is covered, even my Pokémon rom hacks worked out fine.
Never been this early lol. Got my snack and drink ready!
That's a very nice setup, might give knulli another go, just didn't like you had to transfer all via wifi since it formats SD card to unreadable format in windows.
I'd prefer for these companies to release hardware that fits in OG GBA shells/housings. They *can* do it, they just dont.
almost midnight here and i needed to get some snack, cos russ said so. 😂
This is a good idea.
It would be quite a challenge to play snes games on this one especially super punch out but could be adjusted just easily to your preference. And yes this is a perfect gameboy even a nes/famicom console.
Just as a matter of interest. Everyone comment below what colour you bought? If you bought one. I bought green.
I bought the Jungle green as well but I wish they had pink!
I must do this for my RG35xxsp!
Please can someone help me ? I’m trying to play my gba games on my anbernic cube xx and using knulli . The games is slow and almost unplayable and the audio is stuttering. Please what can I do to make them work better ?

Thank you so much for answering, I love your channel! I’ll try to get the pre-release
This thing is going to be great once MinUI is available
Heya Retro, does it support Retro Achievements or if i may ask for a video suggestion: Your top picks for 2024 devices for Retro achievements gameplay
Any device with WiFi + Knulli support will support them with Knull installed at least. So if you copied his setup here they should work. The Knulli website has a section about it.
I would only keep GBA, GBC and GB games on this console, like having the original console with a flashcart.
I would love to something like this for the Pocket DMG
This is cool, but I don't know if this is going to be enough to add to the collection
Just Subscribed!...😎✌️
ughhhh..... I wish this thing came out like a year ago before I purchased an RG35XXH . I purchased an SP back in the day and skipped the OG Advance which I loved the form factor, but not a lack of backlighting.
Swedes in the chat are still laughing at the name 'Knulli.'
Does anyone know of an LCD grid overlay without bezels for this handheld's screen?
Dang it Russ, I was thinking of doing this exact thing, then talked myself out of it. Now I am talked back in...
Quick snack and drink time!!!
I really want this console but kind of want to wait until there’s minui os compatibility - hopefully that’s coming 🙏🏻
A Russ video under 10 minutes???
That's almost as impossible as Russ not wearing a band t-shirt!
.... another handheld that objectively I dont need, but now I want....
This video was so short, I didn’t even have time to grab a snack and drink 😂😢
