In a weird way i want to learn this language so that i can learn again math in another language People say that german is a language of math and logic and i just want to experience it. Plus albert einstein was german and he motivates me Sorry for my grammar my first language is Spanish
Continue working on my very rudimentary Spanish incl. taking a second class. I have a lot of Spanish speaking students and colleagues so it definitely would come in handy!
I want to learn german. But I know it's hard because of the grammar. They have so difficult grammar like *accusative, nominative, dative, genitive etc.*
@@bluesky-ru3wy good luck, they have some similar words to english but their grammar is just too difficult. I am also learning it and I hope we both can learn it
Great job! I am from the Netherlands and have a lot of foreign colleagues, many of which are learning Dutch. I'm so impressed how they make great progress and take the effort to learn a language that is only spoken in a few small countries.
It has been great following your progress with Dutch this year, Nelson. My goal for 2020 is to be able to read simple text in Chinese, as well as have a conversation. I have been testing various memory methods by learning French and a bit of Chinese (Mandarin). I had to use quite different approaches because the languages are so different and my starting point of English obviously suits one far better than the other. Chinese seemed sooooo hard. But I am over the hurdle of learning pinyin and some basic vocabulary. I have started on the characters and they are no longer abstract scribbles but designs with recognisable parts. I have only just started, but I am absolutely hooked. I am astounded how much I am loving learning Chinese. I am using memory palaces galore, and other techniques, but in quite different ways for French than for Chinese. So by the end of 2020, I really want to be able to read simple stuff written in Chinese.
How coincidental! I'm just watching the Netflix doc and looked for your TH-cam videos and now I see you're learning Dutch. I'm from The Netherlands :-)
Amai zeg, dat is wel een heel mooie video. En grappig om mezelf erin te zien (ik voel me wel een beetje trots nu ;-)) We gaan verder in het nieuwe jaar en je komt er wel ! Gelukkig nieuwjaar en tot in onze volgende les. Carina
One of the tricky things is not just remembering words, but also making them part of your active vocabulary. Regularly texting on your phone in the language you are trying to learn, with word suggestion on, about everyday practical stuff will help you practice this very efficiently. Unlike talking, you have the time to look up words you don't know. But at the same time, since you are often interrupting some activity you were doing in order to text, you do want to be a bit quick and not waste too much time on looking up translations. Plus you end up learning the words that are part of your own personal vocabulary, and that of the person you are texting with, first. Learning this first is helpful, as in general we only use a few of words regularly (maybe a 100). And being able to form sentences effortlessly without thinking with these often used words, gives one a lot of satisfaction and confidence. And once you can do so, it will be much easier to add new words to your active vocabulary.
I loved watching this video Nelson. Your a great guy and you push me forward to learning more. I'm going to master a new language this year. Thumbs up 👍
Interesting video! Credit goes to your Mom for taking you to Belgium when you were a kid🤗🤗. I am trying to learn Spanish on Duolingo. Also this year I bought your book REMEMBER IT & am trying to implement the techniques. Thanks for your inspiring videos.
My wife’s family is from panama. Gotta say I haven’t been that motivated to learn but maybe 100 words so far but seeing this video and “feeling” what you felt talking to your family without a translator is what I know I want now. Thanks for sharing as always, Levi
Leuk, die tongbreker over de potvis. Super knap van je dat je Nederlands aan het leren bent, love watching your video's about specifically that. Hier is nog een leuke nederlandse tongbreker: de knappe kapper kapt knap, maar de knecht van de knappe kapper kapt nog knapper dan de knappe kapper zelf kapt
As a person who’s lived in London my whole life with a Dutch mum I never learnt Dutch but I want to learn now to connect with my family in Groningen and this has been so inspiring, I’m still in school so it’s hard to juggle but I’m trying my best but this has pushed me
This is a lot of fun -- I learned Dutch with Duolingo. Which brings me to my next challenge: Russian. Any chance you'll do a video on leaning Cyrillic? I do think your Korean video contains enough principles, but if you're looking for video topics, well, that's one :-)
Hi Nelson, I don't need a second language because I already have one. German. My mother is German and we spoke German during the day and at school I went to German school, I lived over seas in the 80's. My family is over there still. I do understand it but don't use it very often. I did understand a few words you said because I guess German and Dutch is closely related if I remember right. I always follow you on here. I still recommend your book when/where ever I can. I still have to make my own number systems etc. I'm just very lazy. I'll get to it. Anyway take care and see you on your next Video.
It's cool to see that it's doable! I've, naively, challenged myself to memorize 3000 words in three months 😅... I'm taking advantage of a motivation rush to get to a point in which I can watch some simple Japanese anime so that I wouldn't have to rely on motivation to kip learning. Right now I'm at 1391 words, and I'm 38 days into the challenge. I'm using Anki (not drop, because I mostly add the words from the shows that I "watch"), and I'm kind of in a tough spot, but I sometimes catch entire phrases and, in the phrases I don't understand fully, i catch two or three words. That result kips me going [tries hard not to cry] ahah
I know English(British one), Ukrainian and Russian. And now I planning to learn some Japanese, because it's a whole another thing to explore -- very different one. 明けましておめでとうございます
Nelson, I have a painful question that I have been obsessed with : what should we do to improve our foreign language reading comprehension. I can read very fast in foreign languages, but my comprehension of reading them is not up to the mark although I can speak and write fluently. I will be obliged to have received some suggestions from you!
Hey nelson love the video. Can you make a video about how to remeber english words that isnt easily associated with a picture you can visualize? Ie with, about, less, them
Try to buy this book: "The Loom of language" by Frederick Bodmer... it will help you to learn how to learn a language greatly :) help you unlock the hidden Dutch in the English language even... English is a dialect of old Dutch, mixed with French..
Is it true that Frisian, Dutch, and German are the closest to the English language? I can do algebra in my head, but at age 56 I can't seem to learn a second language.
Learn some more Dutch, and than try to read Beowulf, don't think in English while you do, think in dutch, pronounce it lie a dutch would.. you be surprised :)
What are your language learning goals for 2020?
I want to learn german.
My Father is part german [tiny bit german] and i just want to learn that language.

honestly this video made me cry.. finally being able to communicate with part of your family man... damn
Egg 🤣 - I will never forget my Dutch friends laughing their freaking heads off as I tried to say “ei” and I was certain I was mimicking them exactly!
That's a tough one to pronounce!!
Aye aye capt'n.
There she blows!
someone asked me why i love to learn languages, because i can laugh, share joy and be happy in more than one language with different people
