Driver’s Eye View - Harz Mountain Railways - Part 1 - Nordhausen Nord to Bahnhof Eisfelder Talmühle

  • The Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (German: Harzer Schmalspurbahnen or HSB) is a railway company operating a metre gauge (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) network in the Harz mountains, located in Central Germany (formerly East Germany). The company was formed after the Second World War with the merger of the Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company and the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway Company, the entire network fell within the Soviet Zone of Occupation, later East Germany. After the compulsory acquisition of the line in 1949, the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn ran it until 1993.
    On 1 February 1993 the private railway company Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB) took over the rolling stock and the daily running of the system from the Deutsche Reichsbahn, since then it has acted as both the railway operating company (EVU) and railway infrastructure company (EIU). HSB owns about 140 kilometres (86 miles) of track, connecting the principal towns of Wernigerode, Nordhausen and Quedlinburg. Much of the network is steeply graded and picturesque, with the most popular destination being the Brocken, the highest mountain in the region. The company runs a significant number of its trains with steam haulage, mostly employing 1950s vintage 2-10-2 tank locomotives, hauling traditional open-platform bogie carriages. The company is mainly owned by the various local authorities whose territories it serves.
    On the day of our visit to the line we were booked to travel from Nordhausen to the Brocken, sadly Mother Nature stepped in to change our literary with winds rumoured to be well over 100mph preventing trains from running to the Brocken, instead we could either travel to Wernigerode or to Wernigerode - Hochschule Harz for a works visit. In this video we travel between Nordhausen and Bahnhof Eisfelder Talmühle.

    Beautiful, amazing, fascinating. It's great to see the local narrow gauge working not just as a tourist attraction for a few days a year, but as part of local transport all year round.       We travelled on seven narrow gauge, mostly steam operated railways in Eastern Germany as part of this tour and all but one operated a year round scheduled service for both the tourist and local population, it was a real eye opener, just imagine going to work or school on a steam train in this day and age. If something is doing the job well, why replace it? All the railways we visited passed through beautiful scenery. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Take care. Tim.

      Hello Peter, it's my pleasure to share my travels with you, I love to see the world both far and near. I remember my school days where I was told how grim life was behind the iron curtain, people queuing for bread and other basic necessities, now I can travel freely and learn the truth, OK life might not have been perfect, but it was nowhere near as bad as it was portrayed in my school days. The people are really friendly, I enjoy hearing their stories, these railways carried freight, passengers and school children and at weekend families caught the train into the wooded mountains to walk or ski in winter. The freight has been lost, but everything else carries on just as it did 50 or more years ago, where else can you see a steam train taking commuters to work?

      Hello Mike, sorry I've been slow to reply. This is a lovely railway, even in a mid-winter on a stormy day that prevented our group from travelling up the Brocken. East Germany was full of surprises, too many to take in in one go, I will return to see some of the highlights I missed, especially around Dresden and it goes without saying I'll have to go to the top of the Brocken. Now where did you get the name for your model railway?

    G'day Tim, as usual a great film. Having visited the Harz on three separate trips (2011,2012 and 2019) covering the whole system over a combined total of 9 days it was nice to see it from a different angle. I look forward to Part 2.

      Hello Pete, I look forward to meeting up again and I'm sorry I've taken a while to reply. As the channel grows it's becoming harder to keep track of all the comments. I only spent one day at the Harz Railway and even then our planned trip up the Brocken was cancelled due to exceptionally high winds. I saw enough to know I'll return to do the complete system, it's just too good to miss out on. The East German trip with RTC was awesome, I never realised there were so many narrow gauge railways operating scheduled steam trains on a year round basis. It's a country full of Puffing Billy's, how can you improve on that? Well, OK the weather wasn't always kind, but we did get to see two of the railways after heavy snowfalls. Cheers. Tim.

Its nice to be able to travel again, although sadly some of the tours I was booked on will not happen now because the pandemic has caused some of the railways we were to visit to close, some will never re-open.     Hi Tim! I haven't found a cab ride on this route to date, so that's really great of you👍. The class 99 has a whistle organ like the large, heavy steam locomotives. Many peoples say, Harzer Schmalspurbahn = HSB, that's OK in Germany. But this 3 letters are the combination of the first letters from the Harzquerbahn, Selketalbahn and Brockenbahn = HSB.       Hello Hans, here in the UK, HSB is a locally produced strong beer (Hordean Special Brew) available in pubs throughout Hampshire and Sussex, just one pint is enough to knock me off my feet. It was a pity we only had one day on the Harz railways, it would have been nice to have spent 3 days riding the complete system. Although the weather was awful, the view from the train was good because there were no leaves on the trees, it was hard to find somewhere to hang the camera on the back of the locomotive, no easy to access handrails, so I fixed it to a lamp that was not a tight fit on the lamp bracket, when the locomotive was working hard and slipping whilst climbing the gradients the camera got a good shaking. There were sturdy flag poles on the front, but by the time we were returning it was raining so hard it would have been pointless putting a camera on the locomotive. Visiting this railway was a very good experience; I'll certainly be visiting again. Dresden, like North Wales is a Mecca for lovers of narrow gauge steam. It must be time for a beer. Take care. Tim

      Hello, I really enjoyed visiting the Harz Railways, even the wet and windy weather didn't spoil the trip. I have seen enough now to know I'll have to return to cover the whole system. It was my first visit to East Germany and I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful countryside and the friendliness of the railway staff. Cheers from England.

    @ 14:07 just before the bridge over the Zorge there now is a footpath and foot bridge alongside the railway bridge. I presume that footpath tracks off to the left-handside and merges with the track of a road leading to the Dora Mittelwuerke Concentration Camp which supplied labour to the Underground factory making the V2 rocket. After crossing another contemporary railway track to the West, this road seems to intersect with a former railway spur connecting the mittelwuerk site and the present railway just beyond the flyover . . . From Google Earth there appears to be the remains of another railway bridge over the Zorge to the left of both the current lines - this must have accomodated the spur.
    Nice to see where they were made . . The first one launched at the UK fell at Staveley Road, Chiswick, London W.4 . . One and half miles from where my parents lived at the time . . They heard the bang !u

      Hi, the foot path/cycle track followed its own route between the railway and the road. I was aware that the V2's were manufactured in this region, but that was the limit of my knowledge. As our tour progressed we learned more about East Germany's roll in WW2 from the museums and places we visited. Out of interest I looked up V2 rockets on the internet and found this article - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-2_rocket Thanks for the information, I've learned something new today. Cheers. Tim.

    Excellent video. I’ve never seen the route from the loco before it’s certainly something different and very interesting. I visited the route in the early ‘90s shortly after unification. Locos are the same but much has changed everything looks much cleaner and tidier.
    There also seems to have been significant investment in track and signalling. Continuous welded rail concrete sleepers and even metal zig zag sleepers weren’t there before neither was the automated signalling. There again it’s not a heritage railway so progress must be made.
    On my visit freight trains were running from a quarry on the Selketalbahn. Do you know if they still operate?

      Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, I wish I'd seen it back in the 90's. The locomotives, rolling stock, track and stations all looked in good condition and it was a novel experience to ride behind a steam locomotive on an all year round scheduled train used by both locals and tourists alike. I cannot say whether or not regular freight trains still run to the quarry on the Selketalbahn. I looked on the internet for an answer, according to this article, assuming it is not out of date, freight trains still run - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selke_Valley_Railway

    I used to like visiting the Western Harz from the 60s to the 80s, this bit was unfortunately on the wrong side of the fence (the IGB as we called it), pehaps that ensured the survival of the old trains.

      It must have been nice to see the railway back in the 60's, I guess there were frieght trains as well back then. I was told that the existence of the wall did help these railways to survive, it was really novel to see these trains being used as every day service train, not just a tourist attraction.

      Hi, the "Y" shaped rail ties are becoming more common in Germany and Switzerland on mountain and narrow gauge railways, I'm led to believe that they are less prone to moving with the passage of trains, especially where the track bed is soft or where extra pressure is applied to the track on sections where there are sharp curves or where trains are likely to be breaking hard.     vibration blurs this video. did you stick the gopro onto the tender with a suction cup? an anti-vibration mounting could be better.

      There were not many places to fix the camera on the rear of the locomotive as all three lamp brackets were in use, so I fixed the camera to one of the lamps, unfortunately the lamps were big and as a consequence they did vibrate more than I was expecting, especially when the locomotive slipped. Similar locomotives on other railways I visited on this trip had ladders welded to the back of the locomotives, that made life easier as did the flag poles at the front.

      Hello, the switch is set for the other route, the weight of the train pushes the moving switch blade over to allow the train to pass safely. A train passing from the other direction would have taken the other route, this is done at both ends of the passing loop to allow trains to pass without anyone having to manually change the switch blades.     Alguien puede dar una explicacion de la escena del minuto 13:19 ? en la estacion Nordhausen krimderode , el tren de la camara espera en la estacion para darle el paso al vagon rojo pero al retirarse de la estacion Nordhausen Krimderode se puede ver que el sentido de los rieles sigue a favor del tren contrario pero el tren donde se filma, logra pasar sin descarrilar las vias, teniendo los rieles cambiados i teniendo luz verde .

      Hola, parece extraño ver un tren pasando por un interruptor que está configurado para la ruta opuesta. Traté en vano de encontrar un video que explique cómo funcionan, así que intentaré explicarlo. El interruptor se mantiene en su lugar mediante un resorte o un peso, cuando un tren pasa desde lo que parece ser la dirección equivocada, es el peso del tren lo que empuja las hojas del interruptor para permitir que el tren pase de manera segura. Es una forma económica y efectiva de operar los interruptores en trenes de baja velocidad en cualquier extremo de un bucle de paso sin necesidad de operación manual.

      It helps to keep the cost of building stations down, although it is a bit of a problem for the less able bodied, although help always seemed to be available.

      Hi, sprung or automatic points are common on low speed turnouts at passing loops on otherwise single track lines. A spring or sometimes a weight holds the turnout in position so that trains in one direction will always take the same route, the weight of a train passing in the other direction pushes the point blade across to allow the wheels of the train to pass through, a similar turnout at the other end of the passing loop allows the passing loop to work automatically without manual intervention. Trains can often be seen running safely through turnouts that look to be set for the other route.       Hi, it looks odd to see a train running through a switch that is set for the opposite route. I tried in vain to find a video that explains how they work, so I'll try to explain it. The switch is held in place by a spring or a weight, when a train passes from what appears to be the wrong direction, it is the weight of the train that pushes the switch blades over to allow the train to pass safely. It is a cheap and effective way to operate the switches on low speed railways at either end of a passing loop without the need for manual operation.

    I needed to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground stations.
    Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.
    A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train?
    The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden.
    oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily.
    Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford could they extend the DLR?
    All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains.
    Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

You could have sent your entire report to the responsible places in Great Britain, such as the aforementioned Mayor of London, the Infrastructure Manager, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, etc. etc. Just on a side note, what do the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland have to do with these mentioned things?     Hi Tim, Europe is a really beautiful part of the world summer& winter & i have not forgotten just a stones throw across the ditch from us "BEAUTIFUL NZ" looking fwd to part 2 cheers bob. ps have you ever considered a trip to Norway ie train from Oslo to Bergen via Flam & north from Bergen across the artic circle.🚄🚅🛤🍺🦘

      Hello Robert, Europe is a beautiful place with diverse scenery and architecture. Many wars and political regimes have also left their mark on Europe’s architecture ranging from brutalise tenement blocks to quaint villages in stunning settings, many of which developed around water powered mills. NZ is stunning, but being a new world country it doesn't have old world villages and architecture, although it does cherish the Maori culture. There is a Norway trip available through my usual tour operator, but Norway is so well covered by "Rail Cow Girl" and the "Frozen Moustache Railroading" there isn't much left for me to film, although the tour does include some heritage railways that rarely feature on TH-cam. I am considering it. Cheers. Tim.
