I'm so happy to hear you're going to quilt a "pair" differently. I am planning on doing that with a pair I'm currently working on. One will be done with your "Crazy Eights", and the other will be my first done with rulers. Thanks for your Lives!
Just stumbled onto your channel, and you made me realize I CAN DO THIS! I have a long arm gathering dust because I got frustrated with no classes, on how to use it during Covid. I’ve actually been trying to sell it. Now, I’m going to dust it off, and try again. Thank you so much! Can’t wait to see your other videos. Also, I hope to see you in Puyallup next month.
I love your guidance. Your practical approach dissolves the uncertainty. I’m going to buy a long arm and because of your videos, I’m considering a Bernina. 🎉 though I like the longer innova.❤
So sorry I missed another live. 😢. New puppy requires total attention. I hope to catch a live soon. I love the videos. I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you. Many blessings to you and your family
I just stumbled onto this site while looking for a computer issue solution, but I've got a hoop frame and Q'nique machine that I've never used. I'm sure this is exactly what I need to learn how to use my equipment. 2-1/2 hours! Yay! This will really be step-by-step and slow enough to understand. I've already learned to spritz my backing in the first 11 minutes. Liked it and subscribed, and will come back and watch it. Thank you!
Cindy Lowder from Doylestown, PA (hour north of Philadelphia)…..finishing a king size Navaho designed quilt. Always enjoying your demonstrations! Thanks for doing what you do!
And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that! I was looking for ways to speed up my process, so snappers were a wonderful solution, but certainly not essential.
Every time I watch you I learn something new. The pull up slack tuck on edge today and using blue tape. I can’t wait for open enrollment in master class ❤ I appreciate all you do in these lives I sit and rewatched as I hand quilt 😊
Hi Susan! I’m new to all of this and your teaching style is so motivational. Thank you! I’m a bit less overwhelmed and just joined the waitlist for your course! 🎉. Quick note: your “Rulers” link the show notes to Quilters Apothecary throws a 404 page not found error.
Susan could you detail what direction the backing rollers need to be loaded with the fabric? Like right side of backing to either top /bottom side of leader fabric? My machine doesnt have a dead bar.
I don’t think it really matters. I used to pin so that the backing folded back over itself; now with my snappers it doesn’t. So that’s not right or wrong, but if it DOES fold over itself you need to be quite accurate in width of fold. I’ve seen quilters do it all kinds of ways….
I am a new long-arm quilter and I am not sure if all machines have the channel lock? My Juki moves so easily that I can't go straight! I need the lock on mine!!!
How much extra backing fabric do you have on the bottom of that quilt in order to roll on the lower bar? I normally have 4 inches all the way around but it appears that you would have to have much more on the bottom of your quilt.
I notice the extra amount of batting on the sides appears to be about an inch or two. No issues with it getting eaten up with the quilting as you work down the quilt?
I baste both edges but find when I have finished my quilting I have puckers at the edge of my quilt. I end up taking out nearly all of my basting stitches to get my quilt flat
how important do you think automation is as a quilter ? I am not a professional ( yet ) but I have been told that automation is a MUST for any one considering taking on customers ... I would think it would depend on the business plan?
Automation is absolutely not necessary for professional quilting. I personally have been quilting for others over 10 years and do not have robotics on my machine.
It is absolutely not a must! I quilted over 1000 quilts before automation arrived in my studio. But, it is important to be realistic. There's a limit to how much freemotion quilting you can physically do, day after day, and therefore a ceiling on how much you can earn that way. It does indeed depend on the business plan. Does it need replace a full time job? Or could you perhaps consider complimentary things, like binding...or submitting patterns or articles to magazines...or teaching?
Thank you for your reply. I also just stumbled on this page. I love the way you explain everything you came across while doing your quilting. I look forward to watching all your videos on fmq. I just recently bought a Gracie q'nique 19x long arm and have the cutie frame. Don't have enough space for a longer frame. Have already quilted a king size quilt on it. A little overwhelming, but I sure got to know how this machine worked, lol.
@@StitchedBySusan I grew up in Portland! We had the rose festival event and fisher scones had a booth there. I had to get them. I but fisher scone mix from Amazon.
The detailed drawings and step by step instructions are included in my online classes. And yes, digitally printed fabrics can be so tricky! Bethanne Nemesh has posted a very informative review of the things she's found to help on her Instagram and Facebook accounts around January 25, 2024.
I was wondering about the red snappers. I looked at ordering some but I don't understand how they clip on to the leader? There is a piece of the red snapper in the leader? But when I look at ordering them I only see the outside clips. What am I missing??
I really like how it turned out! Great texture
I love how you talk through each step completely.
Good job on stitching down that seam. I like how you pay attention to detail. I also love, love , love your haircut 😃

Like the side graphic for questions. Thanks for sharing!
I've only been long arming for about a year with my 6 ft. Baby Lock. I sooo appreciate all the practical tips!
So glad! That’s why I do it❤️
Brilliant tip in regards to the raw edge!! Thank you!
Intro is great, love the Yoda or Grover from Sesame Street..
So right! I hadn't thought of that 😂

Innovas are great machines too👍🏻 For non-computerized I didn’t care for their screen, but that was personal to my style of quilting.

What a sweet dainty quilting motif! Thanks for the tip on the loose seam. I find those more often than I want to admit.
Yep, they happen 😄
Sebrina from Florida. Love the longarm and love learning new things by watching you!

Are you quilting from the bottom to the top? Love this design. Thank you.
No...although I think this one could go either side up 😄
I’m curious, how are your leaders attached to the bars?
Double-sided tape, 2” wide.
Hi from Linden Tn
It's a shame we can't see the quilting. I can imagine how pretty it is though.
I posted some photos on social media today, Jan 30.
Harbor freight good place to buy magnetic bars
I am a new long-arm quilter and I am not sure if all machines have the channel lock? My Juki moves so easily that I can't go straight! I need the lock on mine!!!
No, not all machines do. However, innovative quilters have Jerry-rigged them with office clips on the rails😁
How much extra backing fabric do you have on the bottom of that quilt in order to roll on the lower bar? I normally have 4 inches all the way around but it appears that you would have to have much more on the bottom of your quilt.
No, I don't think you need more. You'd attach the backing to the canvas leader.
Susa do you ever speak at Quilt guilds???
Also could you ask Jocelyn/ your client what fabric this is. I love the softness
I put the details I have in the description as well - the quilt is Cherish, by Shabby Fabrics. It was a kit.
And yes, I do speak at guilds, email me if you want to follow up on that - susan@stitchedbysusan.com
I notice the extra amount of batting on the sides appears to be about an inch or two. No issues with it getting eaten up with the quilting as you work down the quilt?
Not at all. I smooth it out thoroughly with each advance so there's no change as I work down the quilt.
I baste both edges but find when I have finished my quilting I have puckers at the edge of my quilt. I end up taking out nearly all of my basting stitches to get my quilt flat
Do you put the side clamps on AFTER basting? So that all layers have equal tension? Doing it before can cause the backing to be stretched tighter.

QQ Can you show the pattern closer up or show it on paper in black and white?
I did post photos on social media today (Jan 30) with good lighting so the quilting is more visible.
Missed Will’s intro.
Just too early.
Do you prewash the backing?
I don't. But some of my clients pre-wash ALL their fabrics, and as the quilter I'm fine either way.

QQ is she Stella after “A Street car named Desire” character?
No, but that would have been a good idea😁
I'm sorry I catch what you called those snappers on the ends
They’re by the Red Snapper brand, and they’re called E-edge clamps. There’s a link in the description below the video.
Are they fisher scones?
Yes! I couldn’t think of the name while I was on air🤦🏻♀️. SO GOOD!
@@StitchedBySusan I grew up in Portland! We had the rose festival event and fisher scones had a booth there. I had to get them. I but fisher scone mix from Amazon.
QQ. Would you happen to have a drawing of this pattern? QQ. Have you encountered problems with digital printed fabric, the dreaded, white line?

Yes, there’s a slim little rod that slides in the leader hem. They are included in the kit.
I love the videos, but you got to get rid of the spooky voice. I fell asleep with your video streaming and woke up to that voice/sound.
I’m sorry you woke up that way😌 but it is, after all, a 10 second intro to a multi-hour episode😁
I loved the voice, it was funny…reminded me of Yoda
