    Grayfruit might already know this, but the polygons warbling in the first three King's Field games is an effect shared by most original PlayStation games. It's due to the way the PlayStation computes the position for certain graphical features. It basically used a math function that was easier to compute but less precise under certain conditions compared to other consoles' 3D rendering.

    • @AjaxGb
      @AjaxGb ปีที่แล้ว +165

      Yes, the PlayStation had two major graphical limitations. Firstly, it used very limited precision when rendering triangles, snapping each vertex to a pixel on the screen. This made geometry jump around as fractions rounded one way or the other. Second, it did not have true perspective-correct texture mapping, only affine texture mapping, causing textures to slide around on top of the already shaky geometry.
      If you are interested in the difference between perspective and affine texture mapping:
      The texture file itself can be thought of as a square. When a triangle is angled away from the camera, you would expect the texture to shrink with distance. This can be thought of as morphing the square texture into a trapezoid, with one wide side and one small side. The PlayStation couldn't do that. At best, it could morph the texture into a parallelogram. Any given triangle could only render the texture at a single scale, with no shrinking across it.
      So if you had a rectangular wall made out of two big triangles (very common on other systems), and the player looked at it from an angle, there would be a visible seam in the middle where triangle A approximated the correct perspective one way and triangle B did it another, and things would look very wrong. The usual workaround was splitting the wall into a grid of little triangles instead of two big ones. That way, while each individual triangle could only render the texture at a single scale, taken together they would look more-or-less correct. That's why you get a kind of zig-zaggy look on surfaces in many PS1 games.

    I beat King's Field 1 and 2 with no walkthroughs since starting this video, gonna leave my thoughts here on KF 1 and 2 in this comment.
    King's Field 1 is like really impressive for a company's first game, it's kind of clunky and rudimentary, but it's got some real smart design chops at times, and the story while sparse in the beginning starts going a few interesting places that make up the bones for what ends up becoming a really solid story in later entries. Seeing the moonlight sword in its first incarnation was really a magical moment, and my only real criticism is that the game never explains that some swords have a magic attack if you press square at specific frames of your sword swing.
    King's Field 2 on the other hand is just impressive all-around, like there were moments that had me saying "this is amazing even by today's standards" where if you've got the patience to dig in and really interrogate each aspect of the game, you'll find a well of cool secrets, interesting lore, and weird plot twists that MAKE NO SENSE TO AMERICAN PLAYERS ON RELEASE BECAUSE THEY REFERENCE KING'S FIELD 1 WHICH NEVER RELEASED IN AMERICA. Also the localization is weird, the protag in KF1 is "John Alfred Forester" but in KF2 they refer to him as "King Alfred" and it gets even weirder in King's Field 3 because you play as his son but he's also referred to by his middle name??? Guy's named "Austin Lyle Forester" but they refer to him exclusively as "Lyle" is this like a royalty thing?
    And then also King's Field 3 has a prequel demo that released a few months after the game's release exclusively in japan which bridges the gap between KF2 and 3, only released at specific game conventions in a disc sleeve. This also has an english patch, but messes a few things up, like calling the king "John" and referring to the protag of KF2 as "Alfred" when his name was never Alfred, it was always "Aleph" or "Alexander" which made the transition from the demo into 3 extremely confusing, because there was suddenly this alfred guy in the throne? I had to look up John Forester's full name to figure out Alfred was referring to him.
    Anyway, I'll watch more after I beat KF3, wish me luck on my "Lyle" quest

    • @qwertyqeys
      @qwertyqeys 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@austenaraiza2169 oh yeah I left another comment about this, I'll just copy paste that here.
      So I just beat king's field 3. I think 2 is still my favorite, but 3 is a REALLY strong entry to me, both from a gameplay standpoint and as a cap-off to the story the three games were building. The convenience features like the item that shows an automap and the ZELDA MACGUFFINS doubling as teleporters to fountains that regen MP and HP was a GODSEND and some of the magic you unlock in the late game feels phenomenal. KF3 really does feel like an achievement for from software in my eyes. For example, you found the hidden shield room in KF3, but unlike 1 and 2, the hidden shield room also has ANOTHER secret door which leads to an empty room with ANOTHER secret door, and this leads to a hallway with a locked chest and a ceiling trap that drops a new skeleton, and then would you believe there's yet another hidden door in this hallway? But they don't even rest there because they also put traps in the walls that stab you with spears (I only found that last door thanks to a late-game secret reveal item, the spears did kill me). Even the magic system is expanded, with magic learned by leveling each individual element and having one more spell per element than the previous game. Everything is a one up on the previous game, up to the point that there's now three legendary swords, one for each game.
      I will say though that while I was going to get mad at grayfruit's comment at the start of 3 that "these games so far have not been that good" I realized that while I enjoyed them, I also kept bouncing off king's field 1 back before I was put on adderall, something about it was fascinating enough to pull me in but couldn't keep my patience. Then again, this video was the entire reason I decided to load up king's field 1 and finish it in the first place. What I will say is that the biggest motivation for playing one of these games is knowing exactly how good the game gets in the final hours. It's harder to sell this for KF1, but 2 and 3 really hit the highs we expect of modern from software, with the gameplay options expanding, the environments becoming easier to navigate, HP and MP regen becoming a regular late game buff. I decided I'd stream king's field 4 though so I don't burn myself out on it like I did with the first 3 games for a bit, this is fine as I've got plenty other retro fromsoft games to play on my own time. The thing I love the most about King's Field 1 is that it not only was FromSoftware's first game, but also their first game after transitioning from making office software along the lines of microsoft office with the founder, Naotoshi Zin, still at the helm who still works at the company to this day overseeing things and advising now president Hidetaka Miyazaki

For example, you found the hidden shield room in KF3, but unlike 1 and 2, the hidden shield room also has ANOTHER secret door which leads to an empty room with *ANOTHER* secret door, and this leads to a hallway with a locked chest and a ceiling trap that drops a new skeleton, and then would you believe there's yet another hidden door in this hallway?
I really do love these games without any asterisks or clauses, and I'm glad this video gave me the motivation to complete them.
