When i was told about this song, i had to hear it. With my name being Valerie and meeting my husband Joe in church. We have 3 daughters. I cried like a baby. It felt too close to home. It hit me to the core. He had so much love for his Valerie and boys. Beautiful story.
I was a gospel preacher once. I was at the church building on a Monday night building the VBS set for the VBS that was to take place the next week. Suddenly, my phone exploded with missed calls and missed FaceTimes faster than I could answer. I answered a FaceTime video call from my 7 year old son who told me, “Daddy, Cooper drowned!” Cooper was my 2 year old sweet angel boy. I thought his 7 year old mind was mistaken. I wish he was. He turned the facetime camera around to show my street lined with police, fire, EMS, and rescue squads. I distinctly remember it was starting to sprinkle when he called. By the time I ran to my car and turned onto the highway, it was pouring, but that didn’t stop me from doing 95-100mph all the way home. I passed the ambulance carrying my sweet 2 year old boy Cooper running lights and sirens pulling out of my neighborhood. I pulled up in the yard because there was nowhere else to park, left the car running, and looked for him even though I knew what I had just passed. I so badly wanted it to just not be true. Oh, the irony of building the kids VBS set at the moment my son drowned. Cooper spent 5 days in Vanderbilt’s Children’s ICU until she was pronounced brain dead and we had no choice but to let him go home to his Maker. I remember spending those nights leaning over his hospital bed praying for his recovery, but ending each prayer with the promise to serve God no matter the outcome. Those words were easy to say when there was still hope of a chance and in the midst of the shock of the moment. The true test of my promise came months later when the shock wore off. I contemplated suicide so many times, but what stopped me was that sweet, sweet boy who was at the time 7 years old and Cooper’s brother. He’s been my lifeline more than he’ll ever know. I stayed for him, and he taught me to love life again. We elected to make something good come from our family’s tragedy by donating our sweet baby boy Cooper’s organs and they saved 3 children’s lives that we know of that were also in desperate need with our baby boy Coop Coop, as well as had a law named after him called, “Cooper’s Law”. Make no mistake-Cooper Swims lives on today. I cannot raise him, but I can raise his legacy. To the band: Even though my story started the same as this song’s, thank God it didn’t end the same. By the grace of God. Thank you boys for this song. It hits different for me. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of how blessed I am. Maybe one day I’ll get to thank you personally if you’re ever playing in the Nashville area.

Some years ago, an Elder at my church lost his wife to cancer. He was ex-military. A few months later he took his own life. I went to HS school with his kids. He left 3 children and a foster child behind. The two oldest finished school a year later. They're married and have families. Not sure about the youngest, but the foster kid, I see him every so often. He lives on his own. They were good people. I met them when I was maybe 8. They moved from a whole different state after he retired from service. Living the American dream. Like my family, you start with almost nothing. You get better, make more money, get nice things, etc. But time is finite. You never know when it's your time to go.

Some years ago, an Elder at my church lost his wife to cancer. He was ex-military. A few months later he took his own life. I went to HS school with his kids. He left 3 children and a foster child behind. The two oldest finished school a year later. They're married and have families. Not sure about the youngest, but the foster kid, I see him every so often. He lives on his own. They were good people. I met them when I was maybe 8. They moved from a whole different state after he retired from service. Living the American dream. Like my family, you start with almost nothing. You get better, make more money, get nice things, etc. But time is finite. You never know when it's your time to go.

I’m crying and I don’t cry???? WTH?? This man’s voice and lyrics to a few of his songs just makes things happen to me that is unexplainable. It’s like the world around me just rumbles when he sings. The passion, his voice, the lyrics and even just his simple foot tap as he rubs his hands together and bobs his head dang it 🔥. He is amazing!!
