*MAKER CAMP PROJECT: Custom Operation Game*
Have you ever played Operation, the game where you use pinchers to remove tokens from a "patient" nicknamed Cavity Sam? When you remove items from him, you try not to set off lights and noises. It's fun and a great test of your coordination, but who says that Operation has to be done on Cavity Sam?
No one! Today, we invite you to create your own Operation-style game using whatever character you would like. Some people use Buzz Lightyear; others, R2D2 or Iron Man. For our version, we used our robot pal Makey. What character will _you_ use?
Ready to get started? Check out the materials list, as you might need some adult help. Once you begin making, you'll find that it's fairly simple _and_ tons of fun.
_Here’s what you’ll need:_
- A printout or drawing of your character on a piece of 8.5" x 11" paper
- 4 sheets of cardboard also cut to 8.5" x 11" (we cut them from a shipping box)
- A thin sheet of 8.5" x 11" metal (as shown in video; see aluminum foil modification, below ).
- 2 feet of insulated copper wire
- Tweezers (conductive metal)
- Heat shrink tubing (or electrical tape)
- AAA battery holder (holds 2 batteries)
- 2 AAA batteries
- 3V buzzer (for example, Radio Shack Part #273-792)
- White glue
- Double-sided tape
- Small objects to serve as your tokens (find or make)
- Soldering iron and solder (or 2 twist-on wire connectors)
- X-Acto knife
- Binder clamps
- Fine-tipped marker
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Dremel rotary tool with cutting and grinding attachments (not needed for aluminum modification; see below)
- Tin snips (not needed for modification)
- Drill and bit set (not needed for modification)
- Electrical tape (if using modification)
- Aluminum foil (if using modification)
- A needle or push pin

*Aluminum Foil Modification*: Don't have a dremel or drill? That's OK! You can make a project mod (modification) using aluminum foil!
To make this mod: instead of using sheet metal, wrap one layer of cardboard (with cut holes) in aluminum foil and tape in place. Cut an "X" on the foil over each opening, and fold the aluminum in. Glue this foil-wrapped piece of cardboard on top of your cardboard stack, and tape your paper character to the top. To connect your circuit, use electrical tape to attach your wire to the foil instead of soldering.

A nice conductive handle for the tweezer tool would add some fun.
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Kipkay's tickle box circuit would be perfect for this.
I have one question, when I made my game 2 years ago, I tried using the LED eyes from a stuffed dinosaur. This toy also had a push button switch that allowed the red eyes to shine and made it roar. This soundboard was push button, so I was wondering if there was a way to alter the soundboard from push button to be activated when wired up in a parallel circuit with the other components so one of our games (Godzilla theme) would make a roaring dinosaur sound?. We tried altering the soundboard...

Just saw a reference to the game..that made me think of a 'harder' version...
Make sure the pieces inside are all conductive so that no only the tweezers must not touch the contour, but the pieces themselves too...
But then it would buzz when you try to lift a piece out, because the pieces would be metal and complete the circuit
Hmmm...wow...nicely done! Very neatly executed. I came up with an easy way to do this with my students using recycled items. Ours is a little simpler but perhaps a little less organized too. I had to accommodate 4 classes of 8th graders, so we used items in unconventional ways. We took LED eyes out of stuffed animals, used canned food trays, etc. It was a great class project. you should get conductive pieces as well, if you put a plastic piece int he robot it wont beep when it touches the sides.
New idea! Don't add a buzzer and just let the user shock themselves every time they fail!
It is indeed, you only close the circuit by touching the metal plate!
You don’t actually need a switch for this and you can also use Ali minimum foil
Ok so how can i connect a tens unit to actually shock the player
Yes I remember. I was child and I made one by myself with cardboard. (:
I would use a relay so even with the smallest contact between the plate and the tweezers the buzzer will buzz for a long time and it will be clear that the game was lost.....yup, i just involuntarily lost the game
Or you can go to a store and buy the game for well under $20.00
