I agree with the boyfriend scenes they are boring but it's because you want more of Brando. His performance is spot on. The wife scene could be one of his greatest performance
Take everything that Mark mumbled and turn it around. Brando is the greatest actor of his time and this is his finest moment. The film took the best points of Nouvelle Vague improvistional filmmaking and Francis Bacon's existentialism. I can see why some find suggestive eroticism instead of hardcore pornography boring but they are the ones without imagination.
I think it's overrated generally, but Brando was brilliant in it. He didn't mumble any more than he did in his 50's work, so I don't really get that criticism.

Last Tango is a fantastic movie. Not boring at all; quite opposite, actually. I find it fascinating. I watch it a couple times per year. The annoying boyfriend's story is indeed unnecessary (it was the 70s, cut Bertolucci some slack) but aside from that small misstep, I think it's one of the best and most important movies of all time. The Tango scene at the end brings me so much joy it's almost unreal. One of my all time favorites. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

I confess I have not seen The Last Emperor so I can't say either way... His career is not consistent, but he's made some damn good and artistic films over several decades. Which is better than a career of mediocrity. To each their own, my aggressive and foulmouthed friend. I'm sure you like stuff that I hate, and as you've already made clear, I enjoy a movie you do not. Which is fine. At least, fine to me... Amusing to hear a self-confessed "little islander" film critic, being snide about Marlon Brando's "decline". He was the greatest actor of all time, acknowledged by all his peers and younger generation actors- even Sir john Gielgud, an old school knight of British theatre and not inclined to extol the merits of "method acting" acknowledged his preminence. Critics have to have an exaggerated sense of their importance I guess, as a prerequisite for the job, but honestly "mumbling", "boring", "self-indulgent". Its like Michaelangelo being critiqued by Bugs Bunny!
Watched the film and thought it was good. Only reason to watch the film was for Brando, the cinematography and the music. Nothing else was all that interesting and the characters weren't likeable. I wouldn't go as far as saying the film is terrible or boring, but I do think it ain't that great as people say it is. I think movies with similar themes have done it much better.

Even when Brando was clearly phoning it in for a quick pay cheque, he was still amazing.

I just saw Last Tango and it was a great film in my opinion, also, Marlon does not mumble at all in this film, so I don't get the critics.

Mark must have Last Tango in Paris confused with The Conformist, which was gorgeously shot but boring. Last Tango was stunning and moving.

I'm with Kermode on this one. If you want to see a movie that depicts depression, isolation better, watch Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas.
