  • Welcome to another devlog for Dauphin! In this episode I spend a week touching up my object placement system - specifically, allowing for the removal of objects as well as saving changes that the player has made to islands they've discovered. Hope you enjoy!

Quick thought I had about the tent for the placing it: make the placing zone extend forward enough so the player is able to walk in front of the tent to use it, so you don't accidentally place an unuseable tent shoved up against a tree or rock or something.

Great idea! I think I'll want that extra space there for a spawn point for the player as well when the game is loaded up.

Watching you motivates me. I've been working on an RPG final fantasy/Link to the Past game for 3 years so far. I'll have month long sessions where I work on the game religiously, then don't touch it for another month or so. Every time you come out with a video, I watch it, then start working on my game again thus breaking the cycle. Thank you, and good luck!

An easy way to make equipment visible Is to layer your character and make an entire animation where they are walking in all directions and swinging pickaxe ect then erase all traces of the character. This leaves behind only a floating pickaxe. The same can be said for all your armor pieces and so on. Layers>Character>Head>Chest>Legs>Item in an order like that will allow you to swap out and make visible all the players equipment.

Great work as always! How you handle dropping/breaking items is a really nice solution to use a forced loot table!
Glad to see your saving works too that's always a hurdle...one I've not yet crossed properly and am scared to do so!

You COULD generate the islands using cellular automata for realistic and random terrain. Then you could generate the contents of the island with Randomx,y, test if on water, test if on another object and then add to goal amount and loop until amount is reached per object type.

if the tent's entrance is at the front, i'd add a margin to its placement collision check, so there's enough space for the player to walk in front of tent.

  • @Nethanay
    @Nethanay ปีที่แล้ว

Quick feedback on the tent, Just a couple ideas to innovate it.
I think if you're going to have a tent it's either of these 3 options:
    1. A tent on every island the player unlocks automatically
    2. Some sort of a puzzle/event/activity to unlock a tent on an island
    3. Having so crafting a tent requires some sort of a unique crafting material
The explanation for it is I think it would be a bit weird to have this some sort of a meta so when you unlock an island you have to remember to have (ie. x3 wood x1 cloth) and then craft it.
I Imagined a situation where a player unlocks an island and for some reason didn't put a tent on it.
Other than that I like the game progress! :)

I've decided to use a coding style in GDScript where I never put an empty line in a function. You may ask "Doesn't that make the code very compact and hard to tell the different parts of it apart?" Well, yes, and that's the point of it. It incentivizes me to remember to split functions into smaller helper functions, and it makes it easy to skim through the file and find the start of each function.

I don't know if you've already thought of this element, but... wouldn't it be annoying to "kill" your tent with your pickaxe accidentally? Like, miss-click and boom, tent is gone or try to mine that obnoxious rock close to camp and... oops, tent is dead? A few quick hits could be interesting (as in, pickable items have "life" so one accident will not annoy you... but that idea is debatable too, because it depends on which is more annoying to players : 1. One-hit kill tent with miss-clicks or 2. having to multi-click to remove an element?)
Just leaving you with food for thoughts 🤔
