Classic Game Room reviews INDY 500 for the Atari 2600 video game console. The grandfather to games like Forza 2 and Gran Turismo 5 GT5 Prologue, this is INDY 500 for the Atari 2600. Race in the Indianapolis 500 against 1 other Formula one 1 F1 race cars in this early driving simulator, racecar game from 1978.
Indy 500 uses the driving controllers for the Atari 2600, not the paddle controllers. So make sure you have the right ones before you try to play it or it won't work.
Race against a friend and have a great time in this excellent party game that had a variety of arcade style retro games, not just driving.
Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. The HD series is reviewing PS3, Genesis, NES, Atari and Xbox 360. Xbox Live Arcade XBLA. - บันเทิง
Solid review. Solid narration. Getting rarer and rarer on TH-cam.
This game is a lot of fun, but when it came out, I remember it being bundled with the special driving controllers, and I think it was quite expensive. I seem to remember regular games were around $25, and this was around $40. That would be about $150 in today's dollars, so it was not cheap. I used to go to a friend's house to play this one.
The main difference between the driving controllers and the paddle controllers is that the driving controllers can continue turning in endless circles. Paddle controllers have a stop so that you have to turn them the other direction after you hit the stop.
I didn't grow up in the Atari era, but my frist game system was an atari 2600 as a hand me down from my aunt. and I remeber these games. I wish I still had that Atari 2600. And seeing this game reminds me of pro-am for the sega Genesis.
I had the hardest time finding those damn driving paddles. Glad I eventually did,this game is awesome.
I loved Indy 500 it was so playable and fun, remember getting into the flow just doing lap after lap or chasing the dot. Always wondered how the driving controller worked and opened them once to understand them.
Love this game. So much fun with a friend. Best racing game on the 2600 hands down.
Great game ! Thank you for the flashback.
I like these reviews. Nothing fancy, just straight ahead for the topic.
I had this game and the paddle controllers when I was a kid. I loved it.
What a great port of Atari's 70s arcade driving games like Sprint 2! I'm gonna have to pick this up!
pretty good review, simple game yet fun
Quick question on the top of the cartridge on Indy 500 for the Atari 2600 mine has a number 132 stamped on the upper left corner, is that a cartridge number or what is it? And warlords has 14-4-R stamped on it,what does that mean?
So glad I have it.
@TheSpyChecker
I have what it takes, I just got to figure out vioice traack overlays, or if I can mix them, with what I've already got.
Wow this game looks like a lot of fun especially that other mode where the players compete and try to touch the square before the other player.
I don't remember the driving controllers though hmmm...anyhow I'm a big fan of Super Sprint (it was a arcade game and also released on the NES by Tengen). It had the same viewpoint and a similiar control style. This game looks like a precursor to it in that regard.
@TheSpyChecker
To be honest, you'll not really like what's on my channel.
It's mostly previews of products, car washes, and elevators.
I will add 2600 vids at some point. Still figuring out execution.
Surprised nobody pointed out the easiest way to win, was to cross the start/fingish line, make a hard left, and keep it there. You just do donuts around the line, and click away about 3 laps for every single lap someone actually racing the course would get. :)
can you play with the normal control too? because I don't have the other that you show...
Lucky you. This game looks fun as hell.
One of the earliest racing games on the Atari 2600! I think this is the second one, there's another one from 1977... Anyway, my best Atari 2600 racing game is Enduro, nothing compares to it. But I still like this game, specially the ice track :)
@TheSpyChecker
Okay. It might be sooner than later. (Work is very busy, so I haven't had time for anything.)
Nice! Next up: GRAN TRAK 10, the FIRST racing game! :D
@georgef551 ah..well. good luck on that! looking forward (:
Thats a 1978 black/white CRT arcade game originally!
@TheSpyChecker
Yes, it does. I used to get people angry by winning in this manner. :)
Some people have their nostalgia goggles set on too thickly. In any case, well, at least the reviewer for this game is someone who, while nostalgic, at least acknowledges that games for newer systems can be pretty good.
Some people don't know that there was another game made by Atari called race and it's the exact same game
I always wanted this game as a kid but I got Circus Atari instead.
You wont believe it but i have that game right here, i found it on my backyard.
I was a maze craze fanatic myself.
whoever said this community hated Call of duty? Look at any of the reviews that Mark puts out for Call of duty. They are all positive
@georgef551 ...is that really works?
This game came out WELL before "Sprint" did. If anything, Sprint was based on this game.

Sounds are like the ones in Combat. It's like fast tanks that don't shoot.
@TheSpyChecker
One of these days, I got to dust off my 2600, and make a video of an easy win. Not sure when....
Haha I have this game right in front of me too found it abandoned at a pawn shop
what the in 2008 your already famous and now only 314883 subs
@georgef551 hmm....i dont like using these kind of words, but..LOL...now, that perfectly fits! :D
1 person is HIGH!
@georgef551 anyways, subbed so i cn see when ull release it :D
The worst part about this is the cars are going the wrong way, otherwise its cool.
bow-chicka-bow-wow
Power sliding time.
they should be.
I hope "Indy 600" is a joke -- Indy 800 came out years earlier and must have been a tour de force in pubs, with its 8-way multiplayer. (Sorry, no emulation, since chipsets hadn't been invented yet. :D
@georgef551 emulator+fraps i have full version of it, so just toss me a message n i send it for you...or upload it somewhere
sprint master shoul've used the driving controllers t would of been a fuck load easier
): they don't make the addicting games like they used too.
Ah, the typical COD addict. What do you expect from a game made in 1978?!?! You think it's gonna look realistic? You think it'll have amazing graphics?
Notice that this game is probably older than your parents.
if you like this game, try ''sprintmaster'' on the atari 2600
This game is a BILLION times BETTER than Sprintmaster!
Not sure if trolling or really that stupid. I'll go with both.
@georgef551 atm! (: thatll earn a sub from me, at least
As a citizen of Indianapolis, I feel that it's my proud duty to say, the Indy 500 sucks.
Now the Atari 2600 Indy 500 looks far more entertaining then the real Indy 500.
Not Interested
Your trying too hard.
@TheAbbster79 That's the Sears version, they just changed the title of it.
this game reminds me of what RC PRO AM would look like if it was on Atari.
