    Please note how shiny his pan is. When most of us are new to cast iron, we get a pan that is coarse. There is absolutely nothing wrong with cleaning and smoothing your cast iron. If people can restore a rust bucket pot or skillet to good cooking order, you can scrub and smooth that rough surface! Just do your iron right and season it again.

    Use dish soap and water. The seasoning (polymerised oil into the pan) won't get removed from some messily soap. It's an old wives tales when soap and lye in it, which did strip pans as it was extremely basic.

      @@D0nt_Tread_On_Me You are 100% wrong. Modern day detergent will do nothing to your seasoning because it's polymerized. Only a lye based soap will damage your seasoning and I truly doubt you have lye based soap in your kitchen.

    • @SaintRubicon
      @SaintRubicon 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are absolutely correct about the soap. The whole "dont use soap" was back when soap was much more harsh and made out of lye. Modern gel dishsoap has been proven to not affect your seasoning. I would even argue that using a scrubber does more damage to your seasoning than a light scrub with dawn and a sponge. Its never done me and my family wrong.

      I use soap/vinegar mix if i have rust. But I try not to use a lot of soap because it can set into the season. At that point you have to reseason “from scratch”

    • @joshanderson924
      @joshanderson924 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RageCreati0nIt sounds to me like you don't have a proper seasoning on your pan if it's rusting and absorbing soaps it's a sign that the oils haven't polymerized. I suggest wiping it with a high smoke point oil and baking it in an oven at 450-500f for 30mins to an hour. Let it cool completely then wipe a couple more drops everytime you use it and it should be slick so you can cook eggs without sticking.

    • @FractalNinja
      @FractalNinja 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just did this the other day with some old Wagner and griswold pans. Get a deep bucket or stainless steel pan, soak them in a 50-50 vinegar and water solution for about 30 minutes at a time. Scrub with steel wool vigorously. Takes a bit of elbow grease, took about an hour of soaking each pan to get all the rust off. Once done, sprinkle some baking soda on it to neutralize acids and scrub it down with water. dry completely and set it on gas top range for a bit or in an oven set to about 200°f for it to get bone dry. Wipe on some crisco to prevent flash rust. Wipe off. Begin your seasoning process. Wipe with crisco. Wipe off. Set it on top oven rack upside down. If your oven is still on you can put it back in and crank it up to 300° for about 15 minutes. Wipe it off again. I recommend coffee filters or a lint free cotton cloth cause they dont leave anything behind like some paper towels do. Final step in seasoning: crank to 475° or if your oven only goes to 450 that's fine. Let it cook for 1hr 20m. It will probably smoke a little bit so you'll probably want a fan in your kitchen window and turn on your above stove vent. Turn off oven and leave it in until it cools to room temp. This gave me a beautiful seasoned layer that I could cook bacon on immediately and after using it once it started getting that glorious black shine! Hope this helps and I made it easy to understand 😎
