This man's innocence at this stage of the show is going to be a fun thing to watch die over the seasons.

The funniest part of this reaction is you finding the starks to be ruthless😂, a fun watch.

  • @brohenben
    @brohenben 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

the way the wall works is either the person volunteers to guard the wall fully knowing all the implications of the oath, or they are already criminals pulled out of dungeons and such and are sent to the wall to not be useless. All of the night's watch take their oaths for life and the punishment for desertion is death. Also, I thought it was funny how you thought the Starks were ruthless, because they are honestly probably the most moral people in the whole show.

I actually love this. I live alone and all of my friends have already finished the show. I started watching but it’s so intense and brutal you just need to see others react to it but the hype has already died down in my social circle. Watching someone else react sorta feels like watching something together lol. 🤔

He's a deserter because he abandoned his duty and oath. As aggravating as that is despite his understandable fear of what he saw, logic and sense has nothing to do with following oaths and duty(unfortunately) and for that reason he had to die.

Oaths are guarantees of action, and are sacred. In a world without a centralized government and legal system, the way we understand those concepts, oaths are bond, and the basis around which society is formed. If you swear an oath and break that oath, you have essentially proven yourself to be acting outside of all the laws of men and gods. Oathbreakers are lower than low. It's the most serious offense there is.

  • @helgar791

Use subtitles. They will help with all of the names, dates, places and events. The dialogue is more important than the action on screen, and there will be plenty of action. Pay attention to the opening credits. That will show you where in Westeros the focus of the episodes events will take place. Some people will tell you not to grow attached to any character(s). That is actually kind of false, although you do so at your peril. Do remember though that the name of the show is "Game Of Thrones". Not "Game Of The Characters That Are The Best", or "Game Of The Characters That Make Me Feel Good". As in the real world there are consequences to the characters actions. So. Welcome Sweet Summer Child to the community. I'm glad you have moderators. Thank you American Mom. Again. Most of us care enough not to spoil the show for others. Some however may do so inadvertently, may do so out of stupidity, or may do so out of arrogance. Ignore the haters, enjoy the show. Don't worry if all of the names and places aren't immediately familiar. That will come. Happy viewing.
So. All that said, empty your mind of your modern ideas, ideals, and sensibilities. They are useless and prejudicial here. To paraphrase Hobbs, life in these times were nasty, brutish, and short. In the pseudo middle ages depicted in GOT the average lifespan was about 36 years for men. As today, women then lived a bit longer. Men usually died early due to work injuries, misadventure, or war. Admittedly, for the upper classes, lifespans were much longer. There was no such thing as birth control. Men and women were forced into certain social and behavioral roles for survival. Men had to protect and provide, women had to nurture and care for the household.
Because of the high natal death rates (for mothers and children), women had to virtually remain pregnant in order to produce a family, making them perpetually vulnerable, and they had to be protected. No family could survive without children to produce income. The more male children the better, because men had to work 14 hour days in the fields or at their craft in order to provide food, shelter and protection for the family. Women had to care for the children and worked 14 hour days in the home. Women helped in the fields, and could earn income through outside manual labor, although maintenance of the household was their primary job. Female children helped the mother. Women also earned income by knitting and weaving, and helped the men by sharpening their tools.
Before female children reached their menses their marriages were arranged for mutual family benefit (economic, social, for alliances etc.), and they were usually married off soon after. Yes, it was common for females to be married at 14 or even younger, usually to older men. The female's father paid a dowry (money, land, animals etc.) to the male's family. Males married later, but not too much after, because their lifespans were short. Females who did not marry were low income earners and frankly, were financial burdens to the family. But they were also socially necessary in caring for their ageing parents in their final years.
In the books then the adults are about the age they appear in the show. Robb Stark though is 14, in the show, 16. Sansa is 11/13, John Snow is 14/16, Arya is 9/11, Daenerys is 13/15, Bran is 7/9, and Joffery is 12/13. These characters as you see are very young. So if their actions and dialogue at times seems silly or ill advised remember, these are children with minds of children, thrown into a harsh and brutal adult world they don't fully understand.

That guy at the beginning...they know he's guilty because he deserted the Night's Watch. He should have gone back to the Night's Watch to tell them. Penalty for desertion is death. Ned is just carrying out the law. The fact he saw the Whyte walkers or didn't isn't relevant, since he was guilty if desertion anyway.
It's definitely a harsh world. Surprisingly, a lot of this is taken from actual history, either direct or by influence. Theu definitely weren't sensitive times in human history.
Oh man...you're in for a while ride. You'll start the first episodes and wonder what you're watching, but it won't be long before you can't wait to watch the next episode. Great reaction! Can't wait for the next one.

Every scene and every word spoken means something at some point. Some storylines are long and will seem dumb., but mind-blowing when you get it in later seasons.. . There is purpose for the words that are spoken... you miss a scene, you will miss important stuff later.. I see this show as 3 parts... things happen at certain points that propel the story on and new directions.. 1st 6 seasons dialog heavy.. the last 2 are getting to the points and endings of show with big things happening.. cant wait to watch.
Enjoy the show.. its a wild ride.

Game of Thrones takes place in a completely different high fantasy universe from ours, so it's not "in the past". It has some references to our past through its clothing silhouettes and weapons - but even those are GOT universe specific. As for season 8, I liked it much better the second watch, straight through, instead of week to week the way it came out. But there were still some storytelling/timeline things that were kinda wonky. It was still beautifully acted and the sets, clothing, music and effects were still just as high quality as the other seasons. It's definitely worth watching.

Bro, a word of advise: Think of it of what it is, Medieval times, not modern times! And pay close attention to the dialogue. As small as it may seem, it's all important or you'll get lost later on if you're not paying attention to the dialogue. This was the top rated show for the years it was on HBO! It's one of the wildest rides you'll experience, so enjoy it for what it is. Don't be so judgmental on characters yet. you might hate some now, and like them later, and vise-versa! you'll get to know them as you go! Hopefully, you're going to give it a chance and continue the watching the show, You won't regret it!

As a piece of advice, this world is not our world, we are visitors. On this world, winter can last 24-240 months, there is no room for softness. The modern concept of mercy can get you and your kin killed. Here, a quick death *is* mercy. During the time period that inspired this show, the Wars of the Roses, the youngest a girl could be taken to bed by law in England was 13. There is nothing gentle about this show or the setting. Views decedent from the Enlightenment have no place here. This world has a history as rich and labyrinthine as ours and the story is epic, but this world is not nice, as our world is not nice. Martin does not hide the darkness in it. That said and out of the way, strap yourself in for one heck of a ride and enjoy.

First off, I really enjoyed your reaction, it was very entertaining and I like your compassion for the characters, like the desserter who was killed for understandably fleeing.
Personally when watching a show like this, I think it's good to have a sort of dual mindset; considering things from my own mindset and morality, and also considering things from the character's point of view. Sometimes I deeply disagree with what a character does, but I understand why based on the situation they are in, or how they are raised. If a child is raised from the age of 10 to see "justice" carried out by their father, it makes sense that people here have a different perspective of the death penalty than I do, and I would judge them differently than I would a peer from my edge of woods if they supported it.
It can take a while to really grasp this fictional society's rules (like it takes a while to know all the characters, relationships and places), but it will come gradually, you already seem to grasped it quite well this early on!
This society bears a lot of resemblance to real life feudal societies, where the landowning lords and ladies carry out their politics using marriages, fostering children, etc. to establish alliances, which is interesting for storytelling because the political and the personal is so intertwined.
But also remember that people have always been people, and you will find just as many different reactions to societal rules and norms in this sort of world as you do today; people using norms to further their own gains or justify abuse, people following them reluctantly out of a sense of duty; people working carefully within the norms or gently bending them to care for themselves and their loved ones, people rebelling against the norms to be themselves, and people flaunting the rules when it pleases them and getting away with it because of their power.
Looking forward to seeing more of your reactions to this show!

Okay so some words of advice. Firstly, this is a fantasy world in its medieval times. The harsh values of this world applied in our world for 100 times longer than 'modern' values have been around. This is the way life is when you don't have the luxury of being 'nice' about things without cost. Secondly, you will get a lot more out of it if you pay close attention to the dialogue, especially in this first season, because there's a LOT of information in there for you to catch. Lastly, welcome aboard: it's a hell of a roller-coaster ride... ;-)

I ,shockingly, have managed to not watch a single episode of GoT until now. I knew the same details you knew, in addition to one other character you haven't mentioned. I just finished the first episode, and.....I'm definitely gonna have to get used to it. Seems like it'll be a ride tho, I guess.🤭🤭🤭

This opening episode quickly throws us into the action as three members of the Night Watch encounter White Walkers north of The Wall; only one of them survives to tell the tale. We are then introduced to the series many protagonists, starting with the members of House Stark. Led by Lord Ned Stark they govern the north of the Kingdom of Westeros; a harsh land with harsh rules; we see Ned, who is being set up as the hero, decapitate the member of the Night Watch who survived the White Walkers while his sons look on; including Bran Stark who is only ten. The next group to be introduced is King Robert and is in-laws the Lannisters; he is a friend of Ned but the Lannisters seem less pleasant; his wife is having an incestuous affair with her twin brother and her other brother is a dwarf who seems only to be interested in bedding the town's prostitutes! Finally we are introduced to the last of the Targaryens; Viserys and his sister Daenerys, He is determined to retake the throne King Robert took from his father and if that means marrying his sister to the head of a tribe of savages to gain an army he will.
This episode does a great job introducing us to many of the large cast of major characters without it feeling like it is just an introduction. The opening scenes show us that this isn't a gentle family friendly fantasy… and if a decapitation wasn't enough to make it clear this is a show for adults we get nudity, sex, swearing, more violence, incest and more nudity! So if that sort of thing puts you off you'll know to give up now rather than carrying on to watch more! The cast does a great job; I particularly liked Sean Bean's performance as Ned Stark, young Maisie Williams' spirited portrayal of the tomboy Arya Stark, Peter Dinklage's Tyrion 'The Imp' Lannister and Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen… although to be honest I could probably go on listing the rest of the cast as no characters seemed weakly portrayed. The production values are such that this looks as good as if not better than most films; the world of Westeros feels real; not at all like a series of sets. This opening episode got me gripped as it sets up multiple story lines; the King asking Ned to return to the capital with him to become his right hand man; the 'Hand of the King', the events north of the wall, the Targaryens' plans to retake the throne and the Lannister twin's actions to hide their relationship; this last storyline leading to a shocking episode conclusion. Watching for the first time this serves as a great introduction but watching again one sees subtle hints of things that will be important later in the series without making it obvious that they will be important. Overall I'd say this was great and if you enjoy this opening you are sure to enjoy the rest of the series. 10/10

Love your initial perception of the Starks, it's actually the best I've seen. The show does everything to paint them as perfectly good guys, but they actually do a lot of awful crap from the first scene. Ned doesn't listen to an expert just because it would be the slightest breach of protocol, and it all goes downhill from here.

AC means After Conquest and BC is Before Conquest, as in Aegon's Conquest. This show starts in 298 AC so around 300 years after Aegon conquered Westeros.

hey I like your reaction but one thing: this series is very dialogue based and has lots of info and references important to the story put into character interactions. I think you should try not to speak to much over dialogue!

When I used to record footage to be used in reactions, I made sure subtitles were always on. Not only do they help the reactors know what's being said since the volume can be low, it also stops commenters from telling you to turn them on ;)
