I fully agree. Possibly the greatest composer for westerns was Dimitri Tiomkin like John Ford the greatest director of westerns. However, Dimitri was a great composer for non-western genres of films as well. He was a virtuoso composer with a wide range who took film music to the heights of fine art !
Dimitri Tiomkin's theme from "The Thing" was the most eerie ever composed for a science-fiction film. It still sends chills up my spine just as it did when I was a boy. Brilliant in every way.
yep when I first watched "THE THING'... the music was the first thing that freaked me out. great stuff.since then have watched it a 100 plus time's it never gets old even tho I do.and Dimitri's music is classic for all the film's.thanks for this. Galildog
Dimitri Tiomkin is a virtuoso composer who brought a classical touch to Hollywood film music, particularly memorable music for westerns. His epic style grand music composed over decades in films like the Alamo have taken film music to the heights of a fine art. Three cheers to Dimitri, who was born in Russia and made America his home, thus bridging two as yet unbridged cultures !
Great music. I just picked up a 4CD set of Tiomkin's music. The 4th disc is vocal stuff and it's amazing. Town Without Pity is amazing and don't forget Friendly Persuasion!
No Tiomkin 'hits' collection is complete without "The High and the Mighty" (1954), which became a monster hit in it's day. Ned Washington added lyrics to many of his themes.
As much as the composers should get the accolades lets also remember all those musicians who bring the scores to life . They never get billing or recognition .
Mr. Tiomkin score of the movie GIANT is his best, because the music is stitched and knitted right into the action on the screen. Watch the movie again and listen to the opening, listen to the music as the train rolls along with Rock Hudson looking out the window at the horse riders; watch the movie with the objective of listening to the music and see what I mean.
The Max Steiners, the Dimitri Tiomkins, the John Barrys, the Hans Zimmer, the John Williams and others.......these are the Mozarts, the Bachs the Beethovens, the Chopins and the Vivaldis of our age.
His soundtracks were behind many of my childhood favorite movies though I did not know just how many here he had done. The Thing terrified me.The Gunfight at OK Corral was an inspiration as was The Alamo (which was a soundtrack I played to this day). Friendly Persuasion captured my imagination and was my dad’s favorite.
Magnificent Seven and Big Country are truly great western themes but so are Dimitri's range of great themes both western like The Alamo and others. Great themes need to be compared with great themes individually and great composers with great composers by their range. That is the point.
I knew the most of this titles, but now I know who composed the music. It's iteresting what a wide spectrum of gengres he covered with his composions Good adidea with the posters.
ncly: I think some of Herrmann's scores were actually released on records and re-released on CD but it's a shame that there aren't any original recordings for older film scores other than the films.
Apart from the High and the Mighty, other great scores composed by Tiomkin that are missing here: "55 Days at Peking", "The Four Poster" (a personal favorite), "36 Hours", "Lost Horizon" and "Search for Paradise".
From which albums are these tracks taken? Are they all from the same album? Are they re-recordings? Please maybe someone can give some info on the recordings.
It's a wonderful life. A música de Tiomkim para este filme é emblemática e inspirada. Terá Michael Jackson se inspirado nela para criar a fabulosa "Heal the world" ? Os acordes iniciais do tema ...
Thanks for the correction. To Russians the people of its erstwhile republics the latter's secession is a fact of life but to most of the others in the world the pre-secession Russia has not entirely changed. My apologies for my not keeping upto date in this regard with love to both Russians and Ukrainians.
While the simplest the score for High Noon might possibly be the best score of all time in respect to it's impact upon the film. It is the same theme repeated through out. With out it the movie sucks. The score makes the movie.
Tiomkin is the genuine composer. This is what film music should be. Period.
Incredible talent and imagination...What a joy to hear this music again !!
What a joy! Thank you so much.

Tiomkin has left us a legacy of memorable wonderful music that he wanted us to enjoy.
Mr. Tiomkin sure was a talented, prolific & memorable musicial master!
Red River soundtrack is one of my favourites. Nice compilation of Tiomkin soundtracks!
Thank you!! He did the music for The Thing from Another World, a favorite of mine - gifted, gifted composer!

Actually, he was born in Ukraine
I meant undivided pre-Perestroika Russia of which Ukraine was an integral part politically, socially and culturally.
Дмитро родився не в Росії,а в Україні.Місто Кременчук.
WONDERFUL! Makes me long for the Golden Age! Fantastic!
Dimitri Tiomkin -- greatest movie composer of all time. Period.
He was born and grew in Ukraine, in Kremenchug city, that now bombarded by russian missiles.
@@mikg2618 Slava Heroyam! Smert’ voroham.
Not true.. Morricone and John Williams are there
На время его рождения это была Российская империя
A brilliant composer, some of my favourite movies have his score. It's a wonderful life, Rio Bravo, and many more
Thank you so much, I've been looking for compilation of this caliber for a ling time -- found here!
How they can leave out the unforgettable "whistling score" to The High and the Mighty" is beyond me!
Wasn't Tiompkin GREAT?!!!
I agree... "The High and the Mighty" is a truly unforgettable movie theme and song. One of the most haunting melodies I've ever heard.
genious.........master of 20 century.......
Great music. I just picked up a 4CD set of Tiomkin's music. The 4th disc is vocal stuff and it's amazing. Town Without Pity is amazing and don't forget Friendly Persuasion!
Hola donde lo comprastes?

This is a candy box of great movie themes. As remarkable as the music are the movie posters. Nice job!
Tiompkin has to be one of the greatest film theme composers of all time!

The Big Sky and Friendly Persuasion and The Unforgiven and The Guns of Navarone
It was always John Barry and Ennio Morricone for me, as a kid, but now, it's Dimitri Tiomkin, who is my fave film composer.
For me it's Tiomkin and Alfred Newman.
Bless Kremenchuk , this city gave him life. Glory to 🇺🇦

dimitri tiomkin composed a lot of epic soundtracks....such a talented composer
*my favourite of his scores : dial m for murder
The Big Sky
Strangers on a Train: Terrific film and fantastic music.
Red River will always be my favorite of his film scores.
Magnificent Seven and Big Country are truly great western themes but so are Dimitri's range of great themes both western like The Alamo and others. Great themes need to be compared with great themes individually and great composers with great composers by their range. That is the point.
Strangers on a Train, what an awesome, timeless score.
I remember High Noon quite fondly.
Love his score for THE GUNS OF NAVARONE. And he composed a haunting score for a very early picture, LOST HORIZON.
I love this composer. Most of his soundtrack music sounds, to me, like singing waters.
@williamholzman Actually, Dimi was Ukranian - a different country, if a part of the Soviet Union.
I feel the same way about "The Thing...". It's become a family joke. In fact, I think I'll go watch it right now!
I knew the most of this titles, but now I know who composed the music. It's iteresting what a wide spectrum of gengres he covered with his composions

Apart from the High and the Mighty, other great scores composed by Tiomkin that are missing here: "55 Days at Peking", "The Four Poster" (a personal favorite), "36 Hours", "Lost Horizon" and "Search for Paradise".
Amazing indeed.
Tiomkin's Main Title music for 'The High and the Mighty' is one of his most inspired. Same, too, for 'Giant'.
Where the heck was The High and The Mighty?
i always have similar words when people, mainly my ignorant narrow-minded parents - try and talk to me about the good old days
LAND OF THE PHARAOHS ! MY FAVORITE
Great vid, but I wish you'd included Shadow of a Doubt. There was a great piano piece in there as Charley runs to the library.
John Williams should re score Dimitri Tiomkins' music.
I sure you are right, and I stand corrected.
When I hear High Noon, I think of growing up in a time of innocence and safety. I miss that America
He won an Oscar for it. Who did this list?
Great Ukrainian!!! 🇺🇦❤
Dimitri had few peers.
If any!
Giant was his very best!!
"Tarzan and the Mermaids" is included but not the Oscar winning score from "High and the Mighty". Nice compilation but curious choices.
Just one movie that should have been included: Broken Lance.
Where's High and the Mighty? You need part II.
Nice compilation but it would have been even better had you included Town Without Pity.
@jerbear54 That's strange, since "High Noon" is all about the Red Scare, McCarthy's witch hunts, and Cold War-era paranoia.
exelente!!!
Amazing how "Shane" was left out from this.
Yeah!
From which albums are these tracks taken? Are they all from the same album? Are they re-recordings? Please maybe someone can give some info on the recordings.
What movie does the fanfare at the beginning come from?
The fall of love....
the high and the mighty is not there i dont know why
Greats….Bernard H vertigo,Pierre Hansen le Boucher,Alex North streetcar named desire
@williamholzman like that russian who owns this u-tube-co :)

🇺🇦❤️👏👏👏🇺🇸❤️
Pole,Tiomkin never been "Ukfainian".Please, read his biografy. Kremenchuk just place we he was born.

How can a film suck?
I bet you do,though !
Русский склад ума дал такое многозвучие, не губите Русь своими наживами.
Дурнику, він народився та виріс в Україні, в матері української - до чого тут твоя підерашка лаптєногая….
The famous film composer was born in Ukraine, in the city of Kremenchuk, Poltava region. Glory to Ukraine!
