  • Adobe Illustrator vs Corel Draw. A lengthy hands on review. Which one lends itself better to create a logo? I walk you through the steps with each vector drawing program such as placing text along a curve. If you are inpatient just go to end to view my conclusion. Happy designing.

I'm using both software but when it comes to speed i find it Corel Draw much (but much) better while if you need little more freedom and effects then AI is probably slightly better. Now when it comes to actual work where most of the jobs have yesterday as deadline i usually like to stick with Corel Draw. Its is funny to see many wannabe designers to like AI as it looks fancy but if you work as DTP or graphic design i think speed is more important and so Corel Draw > AI.

+Stinkyller i work at digital printing company and i find corel has a realy good speed in editing and setting size file for printed file, but the colour reproduction is extremely horrible :( even the X7 lose to AI in term of colour and effect

bro you have no idea when it comes to a real industry standard project..how much damage does corel do. since Adobe are the founder's of PostScript Croel Co would never be able to properly integrate PostScript in their Vector programs such as Corel Draw thus it lacks in most crucial tasks such as rendering proper gradients and transparencies for both raster and vector. this is the only reason why the Professional designers have no faith in such a "home user" software. That's why the industry guys reject it.

I do agree corel draw is easier for me to use less complicated and gets the job done. Adobe ai is overated. I was forced to use it because its more popular and companies usually look for someone who knows hows to use that program.

There are much simpler way to do most everything you have shown here in Corel. Reproduce the circles still aligned with each other. align elements, remove a line section, fit text to path, make the center arc without trimming, breaking apart and deleting, etc. Trust me, It's actually much easier. but hey, I'm here to see how to do these things in Illustrator.

Let's be realistic, that's not how you should use illustrator. The way you are doing it is wrong especially when placing the text onto the stroke. I would use the following steps:
    1. Select your Type tool and select centre align
    2. Using the type tool, Alt + click on the anchor point at the bottom of the stroke on which you want to place the text and proceed to type
    3. Set the baseline shift by pressing Shift + Alt + Up
    Just remember this:
    • to place the text at the TOP of the ellipse you Alt + click on the anchor point at the BOTTOM of the stroke using the type tool
    • to place the text at the BOTTOM of the ellipse you Alt + click on the anchor point at the TOP of the stroke using the type tool

To put at the center of the stroke where the text is above the line you can use Type-> type options > and select center to center the text in the stroke..

For Illustrator, just center align the type, grab the center handle for the text and drag to align to the center anchor, the top of the circle.

For my college diploma I had the privilege to study both. [ illustrator and Corel ] my honest opinion is 1] Corel is easier to grasp and work with. Om many occasions i would find illustrator needing a bit more effort to do what Corel does. Then comes the page making capabilities and hands down you can do some pretty impressive stuff with Corel. I like both design softwares but Corel is a vector beast with additional capabilities.

Though I do freelance stuff I decided to try to seek employment as a graphic designer for someone else. I love using them all but most of the time I use Corel as it is faster almost everything I need is there, drafting, page laout, photo editing and illustration. I supposed to use Ai 3D but I have the blender and sketchup. I can do 90% in corel what I am doing in Ai but 70% in Ai what I am doing in corel. In addition I can edit/enhance photo in corel without photshop.

"Industry Standards". Neither CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator are industry standards. I hear AI quoted as the "Industry Standard" all the time but this is a misconception because it's the most commonly used editing package out there. (Example . . . "That's been PhotoShopped ! ! !") The output of the software is the industry standard . . . E.G:- .jpg, .tif, .gif, .png, .cgm, .eps and dare I say .PDF etc. Some of the "Drivers" of these software packages need to understand the best file type to save as (export) for their customer(s) as most "customers" won't have any editing software.

It's corelsbug that it can't copy svg not ilusstrator. Ullustrator get svg details. You missed some cool shortcuts in illistratot. But there was one benefit in corel that you can whrit in center of line. if you align sentet text you will not need to fix start points. Also benefit of illustrator is that you work perfectly with other adobe programs. Like photoshop, xd, indesign and so on

I use both. Corel definitely has speed. Adobe is industry standard because they have a full line of products that Corel never put out. It doesn't necessarily male them better it makes them better at business that Corel never capitalized on.
The node or "anchor points" are far easier to manipulate in Corel than illustrator. Centering things is equally done on both programs. The tools are a bit more accessible in Corel but that's not a determining factor. The outline ability for text is better in Corel. Illustrator does do a bit more but requires more steps. If Corel had a better marketing and overall overhaul on it's product line than I think a lot more people would switch to Corel but Corel is happy where they are I guess.
Infinity is a weird mixture of both programs so there's that. Far cheaper too.

I have been using AI for about a year and a half, and I have progressed a lot, I dont find it intimidating at all, I got use to it, I have created a tons of stuff, even made some modest amount of money selling my creations, all in a year and a half. Its en excellent program if you are willing to learn. I find that the only argument for those people who claim that a Corel is better is that Corel is easier to use. I have not used CD, but its very shallow argument. And again its the only argument I hear. Nobody so far claimed that CD is in any way better then AI when it comes to the final product, and thats the only argument that should count.

One critical difference between Illustrator and CorelDraw is quality. Coreldraw has always been buggy. Lots of crashes in the distant past and today. Many features don’t work and have never worked properly. Tools like trim, simplify, and similar tools don’t work. Convert outlines to curve also doesn’t work. These tools are a part of certain workflows, without which, the entire workflow can’t be done. Fairly basic color separations can’t be done without these tools working properly. Corel knows about it. I’ve discussed it with them quite a few times over the years. They’re simply not interested in fixing it.
Illustrator on the other had has no such nonsense going on. Tools do what they’re supposed to do all the time. My only gripe with Adobe is cost and their rent forever situation. It was always expensive but I at least felt it was worth it. But not to rent forever.
Also Corel has Photo-Paint in the box. It’s the number 1 buggiest program I’ve ever used. People like to imagine that when you buy Coreldraw, you get “Photoshop” in the box! That’s hardly the case. Nothing in the world is as solid as Photoshop. Photo-Paint is the same kind of program, or at least, it was through the late 90’s. That’s when Corel abandoned that software and just started throwing it in the box and calling the whole mess a “suite”.
But Coreldraw does have a ton of unique features that allow the software to serve some industries better than Illustrator. When it works, it’s a pretty flexible program. The latest insult from Corel though is that when you buy their software, they advertise to you as if you’re using freeware. When you close the program, you get an advertisement. When you open the program, you get an advertisement. When you’re not using the program, you get Coreldraw ads in the notifications area. In Photo-Paint, Corel runs ads for brushes in the Brushes palette. And if you have an old version of Coreldraw, it also gets endless, unstoppable ads. Corel is worse than Microsoft. That’s what you’re getting from this company. Adobe merely robs you. Corel doesn’t leave you alone to use the software in peace.

KuttyJoe I don't what to say but I'll have to agree with you even though again, never had any problems converting things to curves or using Corel Pathfinder tools. Here's why. At my job we have a production department where I work. We do custom work on hockey jerseys. We deal with heat presses print machines, vinyl cutter, and a large laser machine. I use the laser everyday to cut tackle twill. To get some of my work done I have to convert things to curves or use the Pathfinder tools. Some of the files our customers send us use a font we don't have. So I import those files as curves and Corel just auto converts everything on the file as a shape "curves". Later on I still have to go and find the font online but other than that it's never a problem. Again I don't know what to say, maybe for some reason you've unfortunately experience d all this but I never have. Many of the fonts I use at some point I'll create personal logos and for some of these logos I convert the text to curves with ease. At home I make prototype board games. I use Corel to make all my vectors as Corel is better at vectors. I'll use illustrator for the final touches and printing. When printing things out at school many of the computers didn't have the font I used so when saving the files on Corel I converted everything to curves and save as a PDF that way opening the PDF in illustrator there were no font constants.

What you've mentioned here is not related to what I've actually said. I didn't talk about converting fonts to curve. But if you want to see the problems real quick, go into Corel's own clipart, choose a piece of art that has outlines and fill color, open it. First, try converting the outlines to curves. 9 times out of 10, that will fail straight away, and take a long time to process it, while failing. Then if you press undo, it takes even longer to get back to where you started. But if by chance converting the outline to curve doesn't fail, next try to trim it, simplify it, or whatever. Those will fail. And this is what I've been demonstrating to Corel for years, probably since at least X3. Corel has looked at it a few times but never return with a reply, or a solution, or a fix. If you take the same art which is failing to process in CorelDraw, copy/paste it right into Illustrator, it will process instantly, and perfectly. Corel's own clipart. The more you look at this problem in Coreldraw, the worse it gets. For example, when you try to convert outlines to curves, some area will fail and create a mess. But if you take that same art, increase the size by a few percent, it will fail, in a completely different way. Or sometimes, it might actually not fail. This is the kind of thing I've been demonstrating, and confirming with others for years.
To be honest, I haven't actually found another piece of software where these same tools actually work as expected. The cheaper software like Affinity/Serif, won't even have some of these tools at all. The ones that do, fail to do as expected. Only Illustrator nails it correctly every single time. I have a feeling though that probably Freehand would also have gotten it right since it was an extremely well regarded program. But I can show you endless bugs in CorelDraw that Corel has no interest in ever resolving. I can't do that with Adobe software. I read here and there that people have found some bugs but I find bugs within minutes of launching CorelDraw. I can show you some bizarre bugs related to using Pantone Spot colors where every time you move the object a little, it changes it's percentage of color until it eventually becomes 0% color. By the time I discovered that one, I'd long since gotten tired of bothering to talk with Corel. They're certainly not listening or caring. So I've never reported that particular one to Corel.

KuttyJoe sorry to hear that but for one I've never used the default clip art in any of these programs come with it because it's always bad. So that solves that problem. Using the Pathfinder tools in Corel have always been easier to use versus the same tools in illustrator. Besides most people just use the first four. I've noticed some people do use the merge option in illustrator which I think is the same as the combine option in Corel. Either way most of these features never get used unless you no these programs as if you created them. If that's the case then you'd have to be designing non stop and designing various things other then basic vector stuff. The Pantone color palette is what I'm assuming you're talking about? Never had a problem using any of the color palettes. The biggest problem with any color has always been with the customers wanting this or that. So we just give them a few options and go from there. The default pattern fills I never use because I just create my own, same when I'm working in illustrator. I've had both programs freeze on me but it wasn't the programs fault it was the computers fault and the person previously using it. The guy had 16 windows open in Corel and caused the entire computer to crash not Corel. Having too much high res images open in illustrator will cause it to crash as well so it just depends who uses the computer and knowing what not to do. Sometimes I have Corel, illustrator, Photoshop, and infinity open and I've never had problems. I just always made sure my stuff was saved in the case of. For me, Illustrators way of manipulating the nodes or "anchor points" sucks compared to Corels way of doing it. Even in music making software, I never use default stuff unless it's actually good but most of the problems you seems to have are things some people never bother with. The trim thing I'm assuming is one of the Pathfinder tools, if not I'm not sure what trim tool you're talking about. Again, sorry you had a bad experience.

No offense, but the way you tried to align that text in AI was so agonizing to watch... You could simply change the text alignment to 'center', then grab the middle marker and snap it to the top - that's all :D

The most important thing is the artist, not just the brush. CorelDraw, Illustrator, Affinity, and even Inkscape have tools to do an excellent artjob.
Anyway, my favorite is CorelDraw. Only if I must use brushes and the fabulous Shape Builder tool, the obvious choice is Illustrator.
Speed and practicality, not just a misunderstood professionalism. Especially that many people use Illustrator "because it is the best and it is professional", and really the jobs they achieve are quite elementary, and can be done with any simple software.

As a graphic artist that mainly uses AI, I feel you're either biased or inexperienced, because all of the things you did in corel, you could also do in illustrator, you just don't know how to do it efficiently.

Agreed. I use both and I can do the same things with both. I find CorelDRAW is faster for constructing complex graphics but I will use the tool for the job. :-)
