I found that using a straw cleaning brush works well for cleaning the squirrel cage

Have a Mitsu model MSZ-A17NA and can't figure out where the tabs are in order to open up the vertical vanes. It's not easy as current models as this model is about 7 yrs old. Any assistance would be appreciated

On our outside camera we witnessed twice a huge puff of smoke or steam coming from the compressor outside. Does this sound like a clog somewhere in the unit, inside or out. We have the exact unit you are showing in this video. Overnight temp was below 30F each night.

Note: we heard clicking right after the smoke/steam burst into the air, up toward the security camera

It sounds as if the heat pump is going into defrost and it is normal. If you have an electric heat pump system. The heat pump pulls heat from the outside and as the air temperature drops the unit ices up and needs to go in Defrost to clear the ice. This cycle lasts average 5-10 min.

Do you have tips on cleaning the drain hose? Or even how to get to it if its clogged? Any help would be great!!

This is a great question and a very common issue. First thing you wanna do is wet vac the end of the line outside to try to clear it first. There are hidden screws holding the case cover on. With the case removed this will expose the inside drain line. Always try the outside first.

Newb question but what is the point of the "squirrel cage"? Assuming that means the black bars. What happens if you remove the black bars and never put them back in (on a unit where the louvres aren't attached to them.

The “squirrel cage” is the term referring to the blower wheel. This is a great question and don’t mind putting together a quick clip video on the names, nicknames and parts. The bars in this video are just safety bars to keep objects from the blower wheel. If you also just remove the louvres the air flow will be undirected just as if you remove vent covers from any forced air system.

Braxton Boys Maintenance hhhhhmm, squirrel cage is the wrong part then. I mean the black metal bars. Are they just to keep someone’s fingers from getting into the unit ?

Yes and other objects since the blower wheel is so close to the louvres. Thank you for watching.
