    Thank you the quick response! I made the stain per the recipe. I applied a pearl shimmer softlip conditioner stick after the stain dried, that gave me the sparkle I like and the staying power of the stain. Worked perfectly.

    I tried some water based lipstains with hibiscus flowers and must admit it was surprisingly intense. Not as potent and opaque as carmine but definitely more intense than the rosehip. But the ph value is tricky… otherwise it turns blue🥲

    Hi Marie, I made this recipe, and I really love it (technically I used the recipe from your book since I have that), but I find that 1) it feathers pretty badly, and 2), while it colors my lips (i had to double the carmine to get the same depth of color you have... maybe it was my specific batch of carmine?), it wipes off on everything. I expected a "stain" to stain my lips and not other things like cups and straws. Is it possible I added too much glycerin? Should I eliminate the glycerin all together? (I may have added a bit too much glycerin, as it took for-ev-er for it to dry LOL). Any help?

    Hi so I just tried out this recipe. I’ve used my pigment, water & glycerin before but this is the first time I’ve used optiphen. My lips went numb and tingly for a good 10 minutes. No redness or rash though. Is this normal with optiphen? Is there any other preservative I can use to replace optiphen?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried this with Optiphen, but yikes! I am hoping to release a better water-based lip stain sometime next year; in the mean time this anhydrous formulation (www.humblebeeandme.com/sheer-satin-cheek-lip-tint/) doesn't require a preservative. Happy making!

    What about a little shimmer? I would like to know if anyone has added a tiny amount of rose or gold mica to make a frosted version? Or would that addition ruin the stains staying power? Any ideas Marie? Thanks!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt it'd stay; that's sort of like adding mixing glitter and a permanent marker. The marker works by soaking into the skin/paper, but the glitter needs an adhesive, but it wouldn't have one in this situation :)

  • @reivenwolf

    if you wanted to add some essential oil would you substitute the EO for the water? Or would you not use EO in this blend?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't add an EO to this recipe-it will not emulsify because this recipe is 100% water based, and that's the point-it's water based so it sinks into the skin. Trying to emulsify in anything oil based will ruin the recipe :)

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want more of a coral colour that really stains in a liquid format you'll need a lake dye; something like this (howtomakecosmetics.com/products/dc-orange-5-zirc-alum-lake) or this (howtomakecosmetics.com/products/dc-yellow-10-alum-lake). You can get a nice coral coloured lipstick using carmine, titanium dioxide, and yellow iron oxide, but that pigment combo needs to be in a solid base like a lipstick-check out my book for recipes! www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      Probably an extremely negligible amount, and considering both are approved food additives (my local grocery store sells alum), I'm not concerned about consuming perhaps 1/32tsp of carmine over the course of a year. If you use more water you'll get more of a pink than a deep red, and you can sheer it out as well for a lighter hue. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck finding natural water-soluble pigments that can match the potency of carmine; indigo comes close, but because it doesn't fully dissolve the final product is gritty (ugh) so I need to keep working with that :) That gives more of a purple or cool red depending on usage :)

    Germall plus is not lip safe. Better use plantaserve e (Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin)

    Isn't carmine made from crushed bugs or insects ?!

    the color is pretty but do you know what Carmine is?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes I do-I'm very well aware 😊 I'm big into researching my ingredients! Are you genuinely asking? It's often hard to tell if people are since most people seem to assume I don't know and are trying to gross me out and shock me 😆

    • @conniefl571
      @conniefl571 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wasn't trying to come off as rude. I'm glad you do your research I just feel that you should tell people about the ingredients because some people might get freaked out. You make great videos and should keep doing what your doing.

      I likely said it in a take I didn't include in the final edit-whoops! It's definitely in the accompanying blog entry, and in my book.

      Connie Fl if people are researching a way to make their own cosmetics they should do research into the products they are using first before purchasing and using it on their bodies..

    just bothers me a little that i'd be spreading bug paste in my lips :( carmine comes from crushed insects and its widely used in the food and beauty industry, but still - its kinda disgusting

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, but is it any more disgusting than eating the flesh of dead animals? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Of course not everyone does, but it is very common and for some reason isn't considered nearly as gross.

    The carmine is fine for adults but toddlers have died from it (ingesting). Just a friendly reminder. Thanks for sharing the video!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      I have not been able to find a single source confirming this. It is an approved food additive. Please share a reliable source for this rather alarming assertion.

      @CuppyCake78 Thank you, I'm not vegan or vegetarian or anything so I'm not commenting about the use of animal products in cosmetics or anything else for that matter. I find the use of insects as dye fascinating!

      In her book she says Red Lake DC Number7 is a great vegan color match to carmine... poor bugs.

      @SarahMae-ty4po 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not vegan either; but I refuse to be so vane, I’d need to torture or kill animals to get to someone’s idea of prettier than my face is without any makeup.

      Beeswax and honey are about the only animal based ingredients, I use in personal care/beauty products. Diy or premade and purchased in stores.

      But it's natural, if that's important to you. Otherwise there are plenty of synthetic options, like FD&C Red #7.
