This was AWESOME on so many levels, I will show this video regularly in my high school engineering classes. FAILURE is critical to learning, so many of my students want super cool and want it fast and want it easy. This shows hours of hard work, creativity and SUCCESS after what must have been hours and hours of building and filming! Thank you for posting!

Very creative! Fun to watch. When I built my Estes Mercury Redstone, the tube was cardboard and all the other parts-nose cone, fins, escape tower-were all built from wood glued together with Elmer's. The tower especially was fun to assemble. Each individual rod had to be glued in place, and the nozzles were small pieces of paper rolled into a cone shape. I had many successful flights but I don't think a water landing would have been a good idea! LOL!

You should use a dual ignition system with redundancy to greatly decrease the likelihood of a unintended launch. For example, the igniter circuit would be broken until a radio command sets off a servo which would physically complete the connection. Only then would you give a second signal to launch.

Thet's great stuff... ! I have 2 incredible stories I'd like to share. 1) I was flying with the
CRASH club out of Denver, they organised a "landing" event, bring a
rocket lauch it, the one who lands the closest to the launch pad wins...
Everyone had his special trick, we talked about it for a week, the day
of the event we were about 30 trying for glory, the 8 rod pad was
loaded, first to go, a dad and his son on pad one. 3...2...1...launch !
The ship goes up arcs into the wind, deploys his Estes chute and floats
back... to hang on the rod it just took of from... Imposible to best
that ! We all shot anyway and nobody got within 20 ft of the pad...
    2) Same rules but for duration, bring anything you want, the longest
flight wins, but the judges have to be able to see the ship land... It
was cold, and there was snow on the ground. The night before I hurriedly
put thogether an Alpha III with a chute made from a trashbag, 2 times
bigger than the original. Next day I was there just to participate, I
could not win against all those "specials" the experts had build. My
trun comes, up he goes into the wind, deploys... nice black round
chute... is comming in... then, about 100 ft up it stops descending, it
passes in front of us and continues down wind climbig ! It climbs 10-15
ft then descends then repeats... 3 of us took off after on foot, after
crossing to wire fences we lost sight, It never landed ! I never found
it ! Later on an engineer explained : "You got so lucky, the wind,
temperature and chute size were right... the sun heated the air under
the black chute and created lift, it was enought to lose your ship..."
    well I lost anyway...

You need to be using a digital radio with S.Bus receivers and digital servo signal, then you can forget interference. Like FRSky or the cheaper FlySky. Even Futaba. But even the analogue servo signal would be locked down to your radio with those brands. Up to 2km distances on 2.4GHZ band.

Neat video, but did you ever determine the source of the interference? What band of radio are you using? There "shouldn't" be enough interference, especially with your proximity, to cause misfires with your system.

    • @Rapidnadion
      @Rapidnadion  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The launch rod and blast area tray were making intermittent contact as the rocket moved around on the barge in the chop. This problem was masked aboard the ‘mother ship’ as there was hardly any motion on the barge at that point. A short piece of silicon fuel tubing slid over the bottom of the rod isolated the 2 interference producers.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow! Very nice rocket and tests! Even from failures or thank to them we learn and improve. I like the look and feel of the rocket, the launchpad and the support ship. But also that you try the RF launch system. Probably you need some other short of RF system, simpler in commands but more reliable, with maybe another not very used RF band, or encoding some sort of message. There are online several projects like that for arduino systems. Anyway great job, I had a great time seeing the video, and I'm sure you too building and flying the rocket. Thanks! for sharing!
