I loved it when I was a kid, and really enjoyed sharing it my kids when they were younger. Timeless movie for sure. Right up there with Labyrinth, Legend, Princess Bride, etc... such a great time for movies in general!!
Same. But I'm pretty sure Henson's not going to give up on the franchise that easily. There will be more Dark Crystal. At the very least there's these books to help soothe the loss...
I’m 33. Saw the movie for the first time at 32. Much nostalgia. Typically when I see something like this much later than I should’ve, it doesn’t click. The Dark Crystal clicked for some reason. I also loved the show and I’m bummed it’s not returning.
I recall renting the VHS as a kid. Shortly after, it began showing regularly on HBO. As a kid I also was disturbed when the emperor crumbles. I also was kinda disturbed by the scene later on where they are draining the slaves of their essence, which is extracted as a liquid in a flask, and leaving the slave all zombified and white.
My first interaction with DC was as a child flipping channels and stumbling onto the scene where the Skeksis strip all the clothes off of the one who they exile. It doesn’t get much more disturbing than that sequence.
Dark Crystal became my favorite movie because my uncle saw I liked the cover art of the DVD, and let me keep it. Since then I adored and felt terrified by its awesomeness. True classic 👍
We would rent it when I was a little kid, and it was one we loved. It's funny, it feels like it is grim dark fantasy made age appropriate for 5 - 8 year olds. I'm not so sure they make bleak fantasy for kids anymore.
I thought it was a glorious achievement I was used to seeing the Muppets I had no idea that Jim Henson's Creature Shop could produce something as Grand as The Dark Crystal it was beautiful it was intriguing it was opal and I loved every minute of it we're really surprised me it's at the the end where the skeksis and the mystics came together and became One race known as Urskeks. The dark crystal is my fav movie of all time since I was little, similar to your story, and I do love all the expanded lore in recent years except for one fact: the legends manga books being wiped from the official canon. That version skeklach was the coolest skeksis ever and they retconned him into a weak, sickly little whiner

I’m still hoping they might bring Aor whenever Covid ends, but it know it’s not likely. Sucks cause it was a really good show
