Those of us who were born in the 70's were teens in the 80's. DM was not mainstream. It was for the electronic music crowd. Electronic music was on the fringe in the 80's. I had their albums on cassette tape. DM helped pioneer electronic music. DM was inducted in the Rock hall of fame a few years ago. DM's sound changed over time. Hard core fans (me included) felt that "Black Celebration" was the best album. Gen-Xer's like me are keeping the memory of this music alive. Thanks.

    • @etainafuzz
      @etainafuzz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Exactly! I had all of their albums on cassette as well. DM was definitely not mainstream. I remember camping out all day at Red Rocks for the Violator tour so that I could have great seats. It was an amazing show, but they're great live in general.

I'm right there with you. Collected them all on cassette. Wish I had kept them, sadly. They were definitely off stream at the time, but they were there getting popular in their own right.

Black Celebration was their best album. But to me Never Let Me Down is THE Depeche Mode song. This is their apex. There are other highlights - Stripped, Policy of Truth, Nothing. But Never Let Me Down, to me, is Depeche Mode encapsulated in one song

And with your analytical skills, it will be a pleasure to watch your first reactions to each of these pieces. I love all their eras, but their period with Alan Wilder from 82-94 is my favourite. Techno genius who gave all kinds of new sounds to the world with DM. He brought so much edge and creative production to Martin Gore's songs. Looking forward to "Policy of Truth", "Stripped", "Enjoy The Silence", & "World In My Eyes". They also have a stunning live version of Never Let Me Down Again from the Depeche Mode 101 concert film.

Let's be honest, Alan Wilder took Martin's songs and made them INCREDIBLE! All of that magic left the second Alan left. Dave and Martin should have dropped Fletch long ago, since he literally does nothing, and treated Alan like a king. Can you imagine what songs DM would have recorded throughout all these years if Alan were still in the band? Martin and Alan are just better together than they are apart. :(

Check out the live 101 version which was the ultimate performance on the first tour that this song was featured. They’re so smart and the songwriting combined with the soundscape is always so creative. Lie To Me, Stripped, Blasphemous Rumours, Strangelove, Halo, Clean. So many masterpieces

      2. Ultra
      3. SOFAD
      4. Black Celebration
      5. Playing the Angel

This song by them really stands out for me. I was watching your reaction and listening to the song and the one word that springs to mind is "soundscape" that feeling that the sound is all around you and really pulls you into the mood of the song. Great atmosphere and texture all the way through. The vocals are fantastic too and the way their are delivered only adds another layer of mood to the song.

my spécial depeche mode : love it itself (with max banana's synth 80s)

    Absolutely love Depeche Mode.
Fun fact is that the entire Music for the Masses album and most of Violator was recorded/mixed at the world renowned PUK Studio in Denmark just outside the city I live in.
Unfortunately it burned to the ground last year probably due to arson sinche the property had been vacant for a while.
BTW no gear, awards, guest books etc. or anything was lost all of that was kept in another secret location. But the studio itself with its pretty impressive history is no more.
Artists that recorded at the studio includes: Depeche Mode, Judas Priest, George Michael, Elton John and many many others.
Actually there is a fun story about their stay at PUK Studio.
Puk Studio was located close to a town called Gjerlev, and the nearest city is Randers which has quite a famous bar street.
The story goes that every night when they were done recording they drove into town to have some fun and get a couple of drinks. But for one individual it wasn't that much fun since one had to be the designated driver while the others got drunk.
They also went to other cities to visit bars etc and it brought quite the crowd to some of those places police had to shut down a bar in Aalborg because of the massive crowd gathering.
Oh and another fact the videoes for Never Let Me Down Again and the beginning of Behind the Wheel was filmed in the countryside close to the studio and Randers.

I think you haven't done any Smiths until now, am I wrong ?
Highly recommended, you might want "There is a light that never goes out", "This charming man", "The boy with a thorn in his side"...

Depeche Mode was never my ALL time favorite but they never did a song that I didn't like - these always manage to move me somehow; either physically or emotionally or both at the same time.

AAlan Wilder was the mastermind behind the instrumentations, while Martin Gore crafted the songs. Dave Gahan is an outstanding performer, and Andy Fletcher clapped his hands.

yes yes YES! They are so sonically pleasing. A lot of that is Alan Wilder's production

You could hear it live if you liked. DM are currently doing a massive world tour. If only you can get tickets... I've seen a concert from this tour on video and they're not just sticking to Momento Mori (their new album). There are tons of fan favourites and they still sound great, even in their sixties...

When you said "Imagine this thing live"... I saw them live in Vienna on 9/11, and first row in front of the stage nonetheless. Possibly the strangest (and best) concert experience I've ever had.

I'm not a big fan of Depeche Mode but yes, they have some really stunning hits like this one ...a great song!
I hear you say "aie aie aie" like we say in French, is it often used in States? :)
