  • This spectacular footage of the wreck of the Manasoo was shot by Ken Merryman. With his permission, I added a soundtrack...an audio interview from 1982 with the last survivor of the wreck. Dr. Art Middlebro of Owen Sound.

The commentary added by the survivor was fascinating. Great Lakes Shipwrecks are often found in amazing condition because the freshwater is so cold, the ships don't deteriorate from salt as they do in the ocean at that depth. I hope they can recover the car, it belongs in a museum.

I would have like to seen it about 30 years ago, before it was covered with zebra mussels.

So rare to have such a complete picture of there loss. Thanks you for putting to together this story.
May we never forget all the lost souls that went into the Deep Cold. Rest in Peace.

A video clip from the Weather Channel app eventually led me here. Its amazing how cold fresh lake water can preserve a ship wreck. You can actually still see paint on the wooden planks.

We have a cottage on White Cloud island just a few kilometres west of this sinking. That strait of water between the Colpoy islands and Big Bay is only 3-7 kilometers wide but very unpredictable and can quickly turn treacherous. The Jane Miller, (found last summer after 136 years) sank here in 1881 with 25 souls lost. Strong East, South-east winds are the worst for boats.
