- Tawny owl chicks normally hatch out every 2/3 days and that's what we expected of Bonnie's chicks. But this week all four tawny owl chicks hatched within the space of just three days - three of them cracking out of their shells in less than 24 hours of one another!

Tawny owl eggs
This is very unusual since the tawny owl eggs were laid at the normal pace, one every 2/3 days.
Hatching
According to the text books, tawny owls normally hatch about a month after they were laid. We were therefore expecting Bonnie's chicks to hatch from April 4th. However the first chick didn't hatch until the 9th, five days later. It was followed by the second just 16 hours later, then a 3rd only 9 hours after that. The fourth hatched two days later, on the 11th - a more usual gap for tawny owlets.
Tawny owl parents
Tawny owl mothers are very protective and despite the cameras hidden inside their nest it is hard to see if a chick has hatched and so the exact hatching times are not always known. However, the first time Bonnie revealed her first two chicks their feathers were still wet and had therefore only just hatched.
Male tawny owl
The male tawny owl, Ozzy, has been very attentive since the chicks hatched and has provided quite a cache of rats for his new family to eat. Watch as these tiny chicks take their first meals.

Bonnie and Ozzie are the reason I became hooked on these livestreams. I think Bonnie is the most beautiful owl and a natural mother and Ozzie has proved himself to be a brilliant dad. I love to listen to their conversations when he brings the prey. This couple are very in tune 🎶 with each other 🦉❤🦉🐣🐣🐣🐣. These are four very lucky towllets.

It's always so fascinating to see the babies being born... Of any species. I especially love it when wild animals, like these owls and kestrels, get v captured on video because otherwise we'd never get to see this.. But I also love to watch any animal birth.. it's amazing, always.

Fab video Robert.. this our first owl box with camera and ive just got up to check our mother owl and with in minutes she left the nest and now im priveledged to be watching a chick hatch.🐣 So exciting...unfortunately we dont have a good view in the box but i can see possibly another 3 eggs..oh shes back on nest.. hope to see more in next few days..💕

This is the first time I've seen owls use their wings like arms to climb the sides of the nest.
Ozzy’s face says: I’m gonna need another rat… can birds possibly have twins/triplets/quadruplets? Wonder what caused them to hatch so quickly.
Twins would be two chicks from the same egg.
Just when you think you have things figured out, the owlets hatched close together and surprised you! So exciting!

Wow! So quickly hatched. Perhaps the lessened time between chicks will reduce the risks of mortality in the youngest ones
We will have to wait and see - it is certainly unusual.
When it comes round to ringing the little hatchlings Robert, have you ever had one of the parents swoop down and attack you when you try to collect them?
I need to be very careful with Tawny owls as they are very protective.
Who else saw the gif of the barn owl and immediately thought one of them misplaced an egg?
We need to watch for other times Bonnie is impatient with the chicks. Two weeks and fledged maybe?
Please everyone reading this...do not use rat poison , the mice rats then pass anticoagulant to these beautiful birds
